Introduction
This application note explains the current limitations of Star Micronics printers on the Windows 8 operating system.

I. What are the Windows 8 Limitations for futurePRNT and StarPRNT Intelligence?
Star Micronics released the following two drivers which support Windows 8.
a) futurePRNT V5.3
b) StarPRNT Intelligence CD V1.5

There are some limitations as follows.
1. On Desktop UI for futurePRNT and StarPRNT Intelligence
USB printer will not appear in Devices and Printers if the printer’s power is OFF.
Otherwise, the drivers work the same as the existing futurePRNT V5.2 and StarPRNT Intelligence V1.4 driver packages.
In addition, the existing Windows SDK packages are supported on the Windows 8 Desktop UI. (SDK for POS Printers, SDK
for Portable Printers)
2. On Modern UI for futurePRNT and StarPRNT Intelligence
You can use functions which are Microsoft Standard such as media size or orientation; however some Star Printer Driver
Functions, cannot be used.
Below are examples of Star Printer Driver functions which cannot be used or changed on the Modern UI:
a) Star Printer Driver settings such as NV Logo print (printing stored logos), Cash Drawer control, Cutter control,
Zoom control cannot be changed from the “Modern UI”.
However, it is possible to change these settings from the “Desktop UI”, so that these functions can be used on the
“Modern UI”.
b) Error status (e.g. paper empty during printing) will not be shown in “Modern UI”.
c) Following models do not support multiple page printing on “Modern UI”.
TSP800II / TSP700II / TUP900 / TUP500
However, single page printing is supported on the “Modern UI” with these models.
d) SDK for Windows 8 (SDK for POS Printers, SDK for Portable Printers) is not supported on the “Modern UI”.
3. Windows RT (Tablet PC) support for futurePRNT and StarPRNT Intelligence
V4 Driver for Windows RT is not supported.
