At Reims he was faced with the stern challenge of a large number of highly competitive Ferraris as well as the Gordini team. Fangio was back in the fold and joined by his fellow Argentinian, Froilan Gonzalez. Fangio was again in fine form and made the best start with Ascari doing his best to keep up. Almost immediately, the Cooper challenge evaporated completely. Both Aston and Abecassis dropped out and Moss started a series of pit-stops which dropped him right out of contention so that he only completed just over half of the required number of laps. At the front, Fangio started to pull away as he and Ascari traded fastest laps. Tadini lay third and Trintignant fourth; followed by the other two Gordinis in the order Manzon, Sommer. The latter dropped out of the race a few laps later when his gear . After ten laps, Fangio was 23" ahead and he continued to increase his lead despite Ascari lapping almost as fast. However, after 14 laps, Fangio was suddenly out of the race, his gearbox broken. Ascari could now relax a little for he was nearly a minute ahead of Tadini and much more than that ahead of Trintignant. He was in the sole surviving Gordini when Manzon retired a lap after Fangio. There were two other retirements late in the race but both were classified as finishers in the French way of things. At the front, Ascari continued to lead comfortably and, in the end, ran out the winner by a large margin. Tadini and Trintignant were the only unlapped runners. Further back John Heath was having a steady drive into fifth place and realizing the potential of Formula 2 for the small-scale constructor. This realisation would lead to the HWM - Britain's first real step on the stairway to Grand Prix success RESULTS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Ascari and Villoresi were hamstrung by the unreadiness of the Lancia Grand Prix cars while there was no sign of Farina. Despite this a good field assembled on the Adriatic coast. Practice saw the Ferraris of Gonzalez and Trintignant heading the list but their third driver, Maglioli never impressed as much in single-seaters as he did in sports cars. So Behra got onto the front row while Marimon headed the challenge of the Maserati team. Trintignant made the best start but Gonzalez got past him after two laps and was never thereafter headed. At the opposite end of the field, "Bira" was slow to get away while Mantovani had to stop in order Simon RESULTS Trintignant Manzon Ferrari 625/F1 Maserati 250/F1 Gordini 23 Ferrari 625/F1 Gordini 23 Maserati 250/F1 Maserati 250/F1 Ferrari 625/F1 Ferrari 625/F1 Ferrari 625/F1 Maserati 250/F1 Maserati 250/F1 to have an oil pipe mended. Marimon was third at first followed by Behra and Mieres. Manzon, Schell, Maglioli and Simon were next in line with "Bira" still at the back. Behra overtook Marimon on lap 17 but his lead did not last long for he spun so that Marimon got back into third place again. He celebrated by setting the fastest lap of the race. Later on, Marimon stopped for a water hose to be repaired and this enabled Behra to secure his third place although he was never in a position to challenge the leading Ferraris. So the race ended with Gonzalez comfortably clear of Trintignant and only Behra still on the same lap. At this time it seemed to all that the Ferrari was a potent weapon well able to withstand the forthcoming challenge from Lancia and Mercedes.
