Duplicate Play Games - Instructions
1. Each player should have his/her own deck of cards (e.g. 4 players require 4 decks).
These decks are not shared with others.
2. Print this document and distribute the appropriate page to each player (North, South,
East, and West).
3. It is recommended to cut the Results page into 16 squares, then set them aside, out of
sight. To keep everything fair (and more fun), it is important to ensure that no player
sees the results of the next board before it is played.
4. Starting with Board 1, each player sets up his/her hand as shown on the sheet. The
dealer and vulnerability are clearly marked so all players know this information.
5. Once the bidding is completed and there are 3 passes, record the final contract (for
example, let’s say it was 3♥ by N).
6. Play the hand, then calculate the score according to the contract (e.g. if 3♥ was bid but
2♥ were made, therefore down 1 trick = 50 or 100 pts for opponents depending on
vulnerability; if 3♥ made = 140 pts; if 4♥ made = 170 pts).
7. Refer to the Results sheet to compare your actual results to the optimum results. Once
again, a reminder to be careful that no player sees the next board’s results as that
could spoil the game for some.
8. If there are two or more tables of players, the scores and results can be compared
between the tables as well.
The results are computer-generated and based on optimum bidding, playing and defending.
Results can be varied, depending on the strategy, skill and bravado of the players, the lead
card, and other factors.
Here are some questions to help guide you through the learning and self-evaluation process.
1. Did you and your partner clinch the contract when you had the majority of the points?
(20+) If not, why not?
2. Was the final contract too high or too low?
3. Was the final contract the best contract? (e.g. 3 NT making 10 tricks gives a higher
score than 4♥ or 4♠ making 10 tricks)
4. Was a game contract or slam missed? Were the points there, but the contract was not
easily biddable?
5. Would it have been a good idea to force the opponents up a level, even if it meant
losing a trick or two if they passed? In other words, would it be worth it to bid higher
and sacrifice tricks rather than allow the opponents to get the contract? Or could that
backfire, causing them to bid game and make it when they might not have bid that high
otherwise?
6. Could the Declarer play the hand better?
7. Could the opponents defend better?
8. Could a different lead card change the results?

Results for Dup Sample #2:
How to read and understand this table: In Board 1, North/South should be able to bid and
♦
♠
♥
make 1 or 5♣. East/West should be able to bid and make 4 or 3 . This computer-generated
table shows optimum results achievable by each player based on the contract and best playing
skills of Declarer and defenders. In a regular duplicate game, various results are to be expected.
Note: It is recommended to print and cut this sheet into 16 squares (one for each board) and set
them aside, so that there is no possibility you may accidentally see the results from the next
board before you play it.
