In singles, Kate Phelps was defeated by Callie Jessie 6-1, 6-1, but Erin Harper beat Laura Brown 6-1, 6-0 and Sophie Van Hooser picked up a forfeit win against Molly Matney. In doubles, Maggie Wetzel and Annie B. Wetzel lost to Sydney Edwards and Miranda Devore 6-1, 6-2, but Maika Ono and Larissa Patterson defeated Lindsey Compton and Lauren Coffey in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). That moved Caldwell into the finals against Lone Oak, which swept Daviess County 3-0 in its opening match. In singles play, Phelps fell to Michelle McKamey 6-0, 6-0; Harper was defeated by Madelyn Kauffman 6-2, 6-1; and Van Hooser lost to Ashton Farmer 6-0, 6-0. “We played really well against them,” noted Caldwell coach Kim Farmer. “The scores don’t reflect the games.” With Lone Oak sweeping the three singles matches, the doubles matches were unnecessary. While the loss ends the team competition for Caldwell, there will still be two girls singles entries, a girls doubles and a boys singles entry in the state tennis tournament this week. Tiger junior Clint Joiner, who won the regional title last week, will be in action Thursday morning when the state tourney gets under way at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing Tennis Complex. Joiner will take on Sheldon Clark junior Jared Stevens in opening round play at 7 a.m. (Princeton time). In girls singles, Phelps and Harper will both represent Caldwell. Phelps was the region runner-up last week while Harper reached the semifinals. Phelps, a freshman, will take on Lexington Catholic senior Emily Rizer, a No. 9 seed, at 7 a.m. on Thursday Harper, a senior, will face Rose Hill junior Kennedy Womack, the No. 3 seed, at 8:15 a.m. In girls doubles, senior Maggie Wetzel and eighth grader Annie B.
