2013 WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic
Encourage your hospital to join WomenHeart’s National Hospital Alliance and become eligible
to apply for this one-of-a-kind, nationally renowned program to support women living with
heart disease!
Washington, DC (June 27, 2013) – WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women
with Heart Disease has announced that applications are now being accepted for the 2013
WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic through WomenHeart’s
National Hospital Alliance program. Deadline for applications is August 9, 2013.
Are you a woman living with heart disease who would like to apply to attend
WomenHeart’s Science & Leadership Symposium to become a WomenHeart Champion and
Support Network Coordinator, but your hospital is not a member of the National Hospital
Alliance? You can apply in three easy steps:
1. Identify the hospital in your community where you will hold your support network
meetings.
2. Connect with the head of the cardiovascular division.
3. Contact WomenHeart’s Vice President of Public and Patient Programs, Lisa Clough, to
schedule an introductory meeting or call with the head of the hospital’s cardiovascular
division to discuss National Hospital Alliance membership and the opportunity to start a
WomenHeart Support Network in your community.
WomenHeart’s National Hospital Alliance program is a partnership that seeks to ensure
that women heart disease patients in every community have access to information, education and
patient support services. Every year, WomenHeart selects two women heart disease survivors
from each member hospital to attend the Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic, and

return to their community as WomenHeart Champions who lead a WomenHeart support
Network at the hospital host site. Find out more about WomenHeart's National Hospital Alliance
on our website and by reading the National Hospital Alliance brochure.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women and more women than men have
died from heart disease every year since 1984. By becoming a national volunteer WomenHeart
Champion, each selected woman becomes one of more than 600 inspirational women from
across the country to be honored with the WomenHeart Champion title. These women, the
“boots on the ground” in the fight against heart disease, are volunteer community educators,
national spokespersons and support network leaders for women living with heart disease. They
are available to speak to community, state, and national audiences about the prevalence of heart
disease in women and how it is so often underdiagnosed and mistreated. They form the only
national community-based, patient-led network of support groups for women living with heart
disease. In addition, WomenHeart advocates for prevention, early and accurate diagnosis, and
proper treatment of heart disease.
WomenHeart was founded in 1999 and the Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo
Clinic was founded as an integral part of WomenHeart in 2002.
