North discarded a club but on a heart to ]A he was squeezed in the black suits. A nice double squeeze. [ AJ ] QJ { AKQT9632 }3 So, both declarers made 11 tricks. Others did, too, and we don’t know how well their opponents defended, or if they shone in the same way – but what a hand. Well done by both Mouritzen and Malinowski, but the award for the best declarer play goes to... Both ended up in 5{. South cashed }A and continued the suit. East ruffed, ran a heart honour to North, and got the only switch that didn’t immediately give away the contract, a trump. Both declarers ran their seven trumps, and now the defense could choose who would guard clubs. Against Mouritzen both did, and this established a guard squeeze: [ K6 ]– {– }Q4 [ T ] A9 N Ö { – V S }9 [Q ] T2 {– }T [ AJ ]Q {3 }– To the last diamond South discarded [Q, and Mouritzen played a heart to dummy and finessed North for [K. Against Malinowski South stuck to his spades and hearts, and this was the position: 4 BEST DECLARER PLAY: FREDERIC WRANG (SWEDEN). Bulletin nr 4 - Nordic Bridge Team Championships 2011 The award for best declarer play goes to Frederic Wrang, who also played 5 diamonds on the hand above. He got a more difficult journey, when South found to lead a low trump. The diamond lead went to dummy’s jack, spade to the jack and queen. The defense now cashed the ace of clubs and continued with a low club (South could have defeated the contract by returning a heart). Wrang ruffed the club that got back and pulled all his trumps, leaving the following three cards, where North still has to discard: [ K6 ] K8 { -- } -- [ T9 [A ] A N ] QJ { --- V S Ö { -- } --- } -- [ Not ] intresting { any } longer – I knew that North was marked with five clubs, one diamond and 4-3 in the majors, Frederic says. I just had to pay attention to what North discarded with four cards left. North finally discarded a low heart… So one the same hand we actually got endings with a double squeeze, a guard squeeze and a Criss-Cross squeeze. Amazing! Best Bidding ‘Charles’ gave us this award winning bidding, produced by the Islandic pair Anna Ívarsdóttir and Gudrun Óskarsdottir. They were the only pair to bid the small slam on Board 15 in the third round. It is not quite easy using a natural system as they do. 15. Problem 5 You (West) are playing in 5{. North overcalled in spades and South jumped in spades. Opening lead: [K. [ – N ] AJ10 Ö V { AQ109765 S } 1043 [ AJ ] 9532 { KJ83 } AJ9 Evaluate the probabilities to make your game. [ K108762 ] KQ5 {4 } 654 [ – N ] AJ10 Ö V { AQ109765 S } 1043 [ Q953 ] 874 {3 } KQ87 [ AJ ] 9532 { KJ83 } AJ9 The contract is 100 percent makable unless no one ruffs }A. Let the defenders win the first trick and discard a club. Cash }A! Discard another club on [A. Ruff two clubs with top trumps, draw the trumps out and endplay North by playing a heart to the ten. You did not pass the test if you started with [A at trick one (and then discard a club on a second spade). As you see, South has the [Q, not North what perphaps was likely after the lead. After winning [Q South can attack the heart suit prior to your club elimination. Roughly it is about 10% diffrence in the line of plays. Problem 6 After a no trump opening and transfer West ended up in 6{. North advanced ]A. [ AQ98 N ] KQJ Ö V { 82 S } A873 How can West combine his chances? [ 65 ]– { AKQJ1097 } Q654 [ KJ102 ] A987 { 543 } 92 [ AQ98 N ] KQJ Ö V { 82 S } A873 [ 743 ] 1065432 {6 } KJ10 [ 65 ]– { AKQJ1097 } Q654 Discard a club on ]A! North continues best with a trump. You win the trump return in dummy. Play a club to the ace (if the king is a singleton it solves our problem). Discard two clubs on good hearts, ruff a club with a high trump, play a trump to the eight and ruff another club. Then draw the trumps out, play a spade to the ace and win the last trick with ‘Englund’, i.e. }8. If the clubs are divided 4-1 you have to finess in spades. It will not work as good if you ruff the first heart. Even if the trump suit breaks and West would be on lead to play a club towards the queen, you will not manage a singleton kung in South’s hand. Furthermore, if clubs are breaking 3-2 you have to finesse in spades, as long as South has the }K and returns a spade. To ruff ]A is only the best option if the trump suit breaks and North has K-x-x-x(-x) in clubs, i.e. not very likely. Roughly it is about 10% diffrence in the line of plays. Thanks to PO Sundelin for creating these problems (used in the Swedish Bridgefederation’s magazine ‘Bridge’).
