Careers in STEM
Both of the pathways in the Science, Technology, Engineering, &
Mathematics Cluster offer a variety of career options. They require an understanding
of processes and the ability to apply skills related to science and math. STEM careers
require you to apply concepts of technology, math, and science to solve problems,
develop solutions, and create/design products and projects. Let's look at some of the
careers available in each pathway.

Abigail Jebaraj
An early interest in science and medicine leads Abigail Jebaraj to becoming a
State Officer and a pre-med student.
From the time she was a little girl, Abigail Jebaraj knew she wanted to be a
doctor. As she grew, she found medicine a fascinating and challenging field
and also noticed the interaction doctors had with patients as she job
shadowed in a free clinic. She observed a physcian in his early nineties who
still volunteered because he loved what he did as a doctor! She believed she
could find much satisfaction in solving patient's problems. As a homeschool
student, she enrolled at Francis Tuttle Technology Center (FTTC) in their
Biosciences and Medical Academy (BSMA). Biology had sparked her interest in
the sciences but Project Lead the Way Principles of Biomedical Science class
really encouraged her to continue the pursuit of a medical career. It provided
an in-depth look into the world of healthcare and the technology, science,
and logistics involved in a career in medicine. Other classes she took included
Biomedical Innovations, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions, Pre-AP
Microbiology, AP Chemistry, Pre-AP Physics, AP Calculus and Pre-AP Anatomy
and Physiology. She says, "Thanks to BSMA, I was well-prepared for my
college courses and even got college credit for the AP Chemistry and AP
Calculus classes."

Through BSMA, students become members in HOSA (Health Occupations
Students of America). Abigail became actively involved in her HOSA chapter
thanks to fellow students and instructors - so involved, she and her chapter
members formed a team to compete in the state CPR/First Aide competition
and won, which qualified the team for national competition. They placed in
the top ten! She also competed in Healthcare Issues competitions and became
active in leadership roles, serving as chapter secretary and president before
running for and being elected HOSA State President for 2011-2012. Abigail
says, "My HOSA experience helped me develop confidence, critical thinking
skills, and a better knowledge of myself and the healthcare field."
Today Abigail is attending the University of Oklahoma studying Planned
Program, which is a Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis on Pre-Med
studies. She is part of the Medical Humanities program which selects high
school students for provisional acceptance into OU medical school and is
minoring in medicine and music. She feels that though this may be
unconventional, it will give her a well-rounded perspective that will help her
relate to patients from many different backgrounds. Abigail is leaning toward
a career in emergency medicine, partially due to a job shadowing experience
she had as a student at FTTC. Her advice to other students is "pursue your
passion early and find a career that will allow you to continue doing what you
love."

Ricky Shriner
When cancer hit close to home, Ricky Shriner decided to hit back.
As a Bristow High School student, Ricky Shriner learned that his
grandmother had been diagnosed with cancer. So he enrolled in
the biomedical science program at Central Technology Center to
learn about chemistry that could help kill the disease. In the
program he learned about DNA structure, the chemical
composition of lipids and proteins and genetics; discovered career
fields related to his interests; and developed research skills through
class work, job shadowing, and assistantships.
Today, Ricky is a plant and biochemistry major at Oklahoma State
University. He is an undergraduate research assistant working on
DNA extractions from soil. After graduation, he hopes to enter the
medical field to develop medicine from plants to treat cancer.

Austin Milton
Austin Milton races through straws and toothpicks to engineering.
Austin Milton was like many of the other middle school students
participating in a pre-engineering presentation by high school
students. Austin enjoyed building a structure out of straws and
toothpicks and decided to learn more about how things work. In
high school, he enrolled in pre-engineering classes at Tulsa
Technology Center (TTC) and learned how to use Computer Aided
Design software; developed an understanding of what each
discipline of engineering does; and learned how to study and
what to expect in higher level classes.
Austin’s hands-on experience at TTC prepared him for the
challenging curriculum that he faces at Oklahoma State University
where he majors in mechanical engineering. He is an active
member of the OK State Formula SAE Racing Team, building race
cars from the ground up. Austin would like to be an automotive
engineer designing suspension systems for a car manufacturer
after he graduates.
