[ABOUT LIOS AND SAYBROOK] LIOS GRADUATE COLLEGE OF SAYBROOK UNIVERSITY AND SAYBROOK UNIVERSITY ABOUT LIOS GRADUATE COLLEGE The Leadership Institute of Seattle was founded in 1969 by a visionary group of educators who created a transformative learning center for those committed to broadening their leadership and humanistic capacities. From the beginning, the core of the LIOS teaching philosophy has been that self‐awareness, integrity, honest communication and an understanding of the holistic nature of all organizations and systems contribute to exemplary leadership. LIOS is committed to progressive education, community engagement and ethical action that promote the well‐being of individuals, the systems they create, and those with which they interact. The Leadership Institute of Seattle joined the Saybrook family of colleges in 2009 as one of the university’s three graduate schools. In so doing, it became the LIOS Graduate College of Saybrook University. Saybrook is a San Francisco‐based educational center renowned for its pioneering research and scholarship in humanistic psychology. A LIOS EDUCATION LIOS offers master’s degrees in Organizational Systems (Leadership and Organization Development) and in Psychology (Systems Counseling), as well as non‐degree workshops on communication and leadership skills. Progressive methodologies and experiential models in the use of “self” as an instrument for effective leadership are hallmarks of both master’s degree programs. An early proponent of experiential education, LIOS encourages the immediate hands‐on application and practice of textbook theories. Cohort learning takes place at Residential Conferences in the Seattle area that are designed for working adults willing to immerse themselves in a “living” model of systems theory, playing the roles of both observer and participant. LIOS faculty are practicing therapists and organizational systems professionals who share their real‐
life challenges and successes with students and serve as mentors to future counselors and consultants. FOR MORE ABOUT LIOS, GO TO: www.saybrook.edu/lios/publications ABOUT SAYBROOK UNIVERSITY Across the world, members of Saybrook University’s global community – alumni, students, and faculty – are working, studying and making a difference. They are united not by location, but by ideas and the commitment to being part of a humane and sustainable world. Saybrook University has earned a worldwide reputation as a premier center for humanistic scholarship and research. It carries forward the tradition of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center, which was founded in 1971 as the Humanistic Psychology Institute. Its creation was inspired by the legendary 1964 meeting at Old Saybrook, Connecticut, when the humanistic psychology movement was articulated as an alternative to mainstream psychology. The humanistic psychologists who participated in that conference wanted to provide a place where psychologists, as well as other professionals, could learn more about this emerging theory promoting personal responsibility, self‐awareness and human potential. By adding two additional colleges—
LIOS Graduate College and College of Mind‐Body Medicine—to its already established College of Psychology and Humanistic Studies, Saybrook reorganized in 2008‐2009 to become Saybrook University. A SAYBROOK UNIVERSITY EDUCATION Saybrook offers advanced degrees in psychology, mind‐body medicine, organizational systems, leadership, and human science. For 40 years, Saybrook has empowered students to find their life’s work and achieve their full potential. Saybrook’s programs are deeply rooted in the humanistic tradition and a commitment to help students develop as whole people—mind, body and spirit. Saybrook University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). It is also authorized by the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board and meets the requirements and minimum educational standards established for degree‐granting institutions under the Degree Authorization Act. Educators committed to experiential education, organizational development and the value of self‐awareness building through interactive training groups (“T groups”) join to create a transformative learning center dedicated to broadening leadership and humanistic capacities. 1972 – Leadership Institute of Spokane (LIOS) affiliates with Whitworth College to respond to a perceived need for training practitioners in the applied behavioral sciences (ABS). ABS is, in part, the recognition of how the perspective—the “lens”—of the observer affects that which is observed; for counselors and consultants, this self‐awareness is integral to engendering positive change in self and clients. 1972 – The Master of Arts in Applied Behavioral Science (MAABS) program (Counseling track) is created and is accredited through LIOS’ affiliation with Whitworth College. The bulk of instruction is delivered off‐campus during residential stays designed for full immersion into the program by students in cohort groups. Emphasis is placed on understanding human and organizational systems. 1980– A second track focused on Organization Development consulting is added to the MAABS Program. Students of both tracks, however, study the same core courses primarily during the first year before branching off the second year into their area of specialization. 1984 – LIOS moves from Spokane to Seattle, affiliates with City University, and becomes Leadership Institute of Seattle. 1990 – LIOS moves from Seattle office to nearby Bellevue. 1992 – LIOS leaves City University and affiliates with Bastyr College (Seattle). Bastyr’s holistic approach to healthcare and LIOS’ holistic approach to human and organizational systems are seen as particularly compatible. LIOS remains in its Bellevue location. 1994 – The addition of LIOS to Bastyr College enables the naturopathic/natural sciences school to become Bastyr University. 1994 – A Bachelor’s Degree‐Completion Program is launched. 2000 – InterAct workshop conducted by LIOS faculty for the public is launched. Based on the interactive self‐awareness and communication groups LIOS students participate in, InterAct is a three‐day workshop designed for individuals in strategic roles in organizational settings. It focuses on building effective communication skills for successful professional and personal relationships. 2001 – LIOS moves to Bastyr University’s new Kenmore, WA, campus. 2003 – Bachelor’s program is phased out. All resources channeled into supporting the more popular graduate programs and public workshops. 2006 – Results Focused Communication workshop conducted by LIOS faculty for the public is launched. This one‐day interactive workshop includes some of the same instruction in effective communication as the longer InterAct workshop. Participants learn theories and practice skills that build self‐awareness, integrity and an understanding of how and why individuals act, react and interact as they do in groups and in one‐on‐one relationships. 2008/2009 – LIOS transfers affiliation from Bastyr University to Saybrook University (San Francisco) and moves from Kenmore campus to offices in Kirkland, WA. New association with Saybrook strengthens LIOS’ grounding in humanistic psychology and provides for accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). 2009 to Present – As “LIOS Graduate College of Saybrook University,” LIOS continues offering Master’s Degree Programs in Organizational Systems/Leadership and Organization Development, and Psychology/Systems Counseling, with program entry points in Fall and Spring. The workshops—InterAct: Skills for Adaptive Leadership, and Results‐Focused Communication—also continue to be offered to the public. 2011 – The LIOS Scholarship for Multicultural Leaders is created. Up to 10 scholarships are awarded per year to students with demonstrated leadership capacities from underrepresented ethno‐cultural communities. The scholarships provide substantial coverage of tuitions costs for students entering either of LIOS’ two graduate programs.
