For instance, a population can be described by giving the state of each individual and interactions between them (which we call the individual or microscopic level), on the level of statistic description of a sample of the system (which we shall call the mesoscopic, or kinetic, level), and also by averaging over mesoscopic (structural) states; that is, at the level of interactions between subpopulations of the original system (which we shall term macroscopic or hydrodynamic). Each level has an associated class of mathematical equations which provide mathematical model of it [La08]: linear continuous semigroups of Markov operators (stochastic semigroups), [LM94], which describe interacting individuals on the microscopic level, continuous nonlinear semigroups, or their linear versions, related to nonlocal kinetic equations, [ABDL], describing statistical sample of elements interacting on the meso-level, and dynamical systems usually related to reaction-diffusion equations (though occasionlly reduced to systems of ordinary differential equations) describing the system at the macroscopic level of densities of subpopulations of the system. The information about the regime in which the system operates is coded in the parameters of the equation and, ideally, by changing these parameters we should be able to move smoothly between microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic level depending on whether we are interested more in the accuracy of the description and do not care about the cost of getting it, or conversely. Unfortunately, in most cases when we change the parameters of the equation to move from one regime to another, the type of the equation changes as well, and hence the properties of the solutions in different regimes are often dramatically different. In many cases, if we are not interested in initial transient evolution, the system can be described accurately by simpler, often finite-dimensional, dynamics on invariant manifolds and/or attractors. However, sometimes this proves impossible and the system displays phase transitions, self-organization or chaotic behaviour. Careful mathematical analysis in many cases allows proving existence of such phenomena providing thus invaluable tools for further numerical and experimental treatment of the modelled system. Research in this field has been successfully carried out by the proposed members of the team for several years, both on their own or collaboratively. Prof M. Lachowicz is a renowned specialist in analysis interconnection of micro-, meso- and macro systems in natural sciences with particular application in cancer modelling Erasmus Mundus Mobility with Asia (EMMA) and kinetic-type description of biological systems. He was also twice the Polish coordinator of European Union projects related to cancer modelling. The specific objectives are: • Phase-transitions and swarming in kinetic type models. • Long-time behaviour of kinetic models in population theory. • Interplay of microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic models describing evolution of diseases, including cancer and HIV/AIDS. The methodology is a combination of powerful techniques drawn from functional analysis, partial differential equations and dynamical systems including, but not restricted to, linear and nonlinear semigroups, compactness methods, Sobolev spaces, invariant manifolds, singular perturbation theory, Markov processes. In addition, most reactions are not instantaneous, there exist natural time delays in the evolution of cell states. It is a challenge to develop a systematic and rigorous treatment of stochastic dynamics with time delays and to investigate combined effects of stochasticity and delays in concrete models. The main goal of this PhD project is to analyze stochastic and time delay effects in simple mathematical models of gene expression and regulatory networks. In Erasmus Mundus Mobility with Asia (EMMA) particular, we would like to obtain analytical formulas describing noise propagation in such systems. Prospective candidates should have a working knowledge of ordinary differential equations, probability and stochastic processes, in particular Markov chains.
