Arriving into Lisbon Airport, you will collect your VW
Golf (or equivalent) and make your way about 20
minutes up the coast to the outstanding 5 star Hotel
Palacio, the centrepiece of Estoril and one of the
great European landmarks. You will be staying 2
nights and while here you will have an opportunity
to play the wonderful McKenzie Ross Estoril Golf
Club. This slightly quirky and not long course was
home to the Portuguese Open for many years, but
is distinguished by it’s very challenging Par 3’s.
When you are not golfing in Estoril, you can enjoy
one of the grandest Casinos in Europe, or perhaps
some of the excellent seaside restaurants, a short
walk up the beach in Cascais.
After your short stay in Estoril, you will drive a few
miles to the 5* resort of Penha Longa, a 15th Century monastery converted into one of the finest resorts in Europe, and now owned by the Ritz-Carlton
chain. Penha Longa is home to one of the finest
Golf courses in Portugal (pictured above), designed
by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1992
This championship course is ranked among the best in
Europe. It hosted the Portuguese Open in 1994 and
1995, the Estoril Challenge in 1997, and the Estoril
Open in 1999. The Atlantic is a challenging course for
golfers of all standards. It blends in perfectly with its
surroundings and there are breathtaking views both of
the ocean with Estoril and Cascais in the foreground,
and over the mountains.
The other outstanding course you will play is Quinta
da Marinha. This carefully maintained par-71, 18-hole
golf course was also designed by Robert Trent Jones.
It offers stimulating challenges amidst the natural
beauty of a variety of forest and ocean landscapes.
Oitavos Golfe, a Athlone favourite, is set among pine
woods and reforested dunes, in an area of great natural beauty, surrounded by the Sintra mountains to the
North and by the Atlantic Ocean to the South and
West.
