Chapter: A chartered undergraduate or alumnae group recognized by a fraternity or sorority. Because each woman is considered on an individual basis, the sorority is not obligated to extend a bid to a legacy. By the same token, a potential new member should choose the group with which she feels most comfortable. National Panhellenic Conference (NPC): The coordinating body of all college Panhellenic Associations in the United States and Canada. National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC): A governing body composed of nine national, historically AfricanAmerican sororities and fraternities. New Member: A woman who has accepted a bid to join a sorority but has not been initiated. Panhellenic Association: The governing body for the 14 NPC sororities at UNL. Philanthropy: Community service or fund-raising effort to promote human welfare. Recommendation/Reference: A written letter or statement recommending a potential member to a sorority. Recruitment: An organized activity to meet potential new members. Sister: A term used within a women’s fraternity when referring to other members. Sorority: A Greek-letter sisterhood; also called a women’s fraternity. Α∆Π ΑΧΩ Guidelines and Formal Recruitment Rules for Potential New Members A few hints and guidelines to help make your recruitment experience positive and fun. 1. Nametags. You will be responsible for wearing your Panhellenic nametag during all formal recruitment events. 2. Eligibility. You are eligible to pledge if you have enrolled as a full-time student (12 or more credit hours), or if you are an upperclassman who has a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. 3. Attendance. You must attend all scheduled Panhellenic meetings and orientations and the maximum number of daily events for which you are invited to attend. In case of an illness, accident or emergency, notify a Recruitment Guide or the Office of Greek Affairs (472-2582). 4. Favors. Do not remove anything from the chapter houses during Fall Formal Recruitment events (favors, nametags, etc.). 5. Communication. During the week of Fall Formal Recruitment, you may not communicate (in person, phone calls, e-mail, etc) with sorority women, excluding Recruitment Guides, Panhellenic Executive Board members, and Panhellenic staff, except during scheduled recruitment events. Exceptions to be made at the discretion of the Greek Advisor. 6.Bids. Bids inviting you to join a sorority may be given only through the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Panhellenic Association and issued through that body. Promise of an invitation or a bid during the week is forbidden. Any sorority should be reported who extends such a bid, and any potential member who accepts is subject to penalties of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Panhellenic Association. 7. Third party recruitment. There is to be no deliberate membership recruitment through a third party — alumnae, relatives, teachers, friends, or men. 8. Meetings. You must attend every event you have accepted — at the time assigned. Any absence is unacceptable and may result in immediately being released from Fall Formal Recruitment. In case of an illness, accident or emergency, you must notify a Recruitment Guide or the Office of Greek Affairs (472-2582). 9. No guarantee. A sorority may not state or imply that you are guaranteed an invitation to join the sorority at any time during Fall Formal Recruitment, even if you are a legacy. Recruitment Rules & Policies This code of ethics is a set of standards and morals that we as sorority women want to set for ourselves in the recruitment process. This is a belief system that we have established in order for everyone to remain focused on the principles for which we were founded. Right to Choice Each potential member will have the right to make her own decision without influence from others, including individual chapters, members, or alumnae. Enjoyment Potential members will have the right to be in a comfortable and pressure-free environment. Promoting the System The promotion of Greek membership will be the primary concern for all Greek System members. Truth Potential members will be entitled to the truth at all times during the recruitment process. Responsibility It will be the responsibility of all members to understand and be able to enunciate the National Panhellenic Conference guidelines, chapter expectations, and values. Membership Membership selection will not be discriminatory on the basis of race, material wealth, appearance, disability, sexual orientation, or age. Respect All Greek members will show consideration and appreciation for each other. Oral Bidding By mutual consent there will be no oral bidding. Oral bidding will be understood to mean inviting anyone into membership prior to formal bid day or using persistent persuasion to secure a commitment from the potential member for the preference of its group. This can also be thought of as an inducement to pledge. This includes any discussion concerning recruitment prior to the potential member picking up her bid card. Recruitment Following the filing of a “sorority preference card” and Bid Day there will be a period of time where active sorority women may be in contact with potential members. This time period is still considered part of recruitment. Under no circumstances should any sorority woman ask a potential member the chapters she listed on her preference card nor should any sorority woman indicate to a potential member that she is on a “final list.” Financial Information Based on costs of chapter maintenance, membership programming, and social events, financial responsibility is extremely important to individual chapters. The costs of belonging to a chapter are the most expensive during the first year of sorority membership. It is important that a potential new member joining a sorority understands and is able to meet the financial obligations associated with membership. During recruitment, a potential new member should ask sorority members about financial obligations. Included is a chart that will give you an idea of high, low, and average sorority costs. The figures do not include optional expenses. A woman living outside the chapter house during her first year of membership pays the new member fee. Many of the chapters require each new member to pay a one-time corporation assessment and initiation fee. A sorority pin is also purchased on or before initiation. Although a new member’s first year includes one-time fees, sorority living expenses are very comparable to other living options. Each chapter provides the opportunity for women to live in the chapter house at some point. The live-in costs are a compilation of all costs incurred by a member living in the chapter house such as room, board, and other mandatory fees. When a member lives outside the house she is required to pay a live-out fee. Live-out costs include such things as maintenance fees, social dues, and occasional meals. Live-in and live-out fees are usually paid in installments, but many chapters offer alternative payment plans. Check out the pictures included in this brochure as well as the Dos and Don’ts. Remember, the days are going to be long and hot! Your main concern should be comfort as you will be doing a great deal of walking and standing in the sun. What happens at a recruitment party? A recruitment party is the time set aside for prospective members to learn more about individual chapters and for chapter members to learn more about potential new members. Potential new members will meet and talk to various members of the chapters, see skits and videos, and tour the houses. Remember, members are just as nervous about meeting new people and making a good impression as you are. They are concentrating on portraying a favorable image of their chapter as much as you are concerned about positively representing yourself. Most women are meeting you for the first time and will need to ask the same “get to know you” questions. Don’t be shy. The more you get to know the chapters and vice-versa, the easier it will be to select the chapters which are right for you. What about rumors? It is possible that during recruitment you may hear rumors about chapters or chapter members. Speaking unfavorably of a chapter, chapter member, or another potential new member could result in influencing someone’s recruitment experience and possibly hurting someone’s feelings. A potential new member’s concerns should be learning about those chapters in which she is most interested. If you encounter any negative comments or behavior from chapter members or other potential new members, do not hesitate to report it. Questions and concerns should be directed to your Recruitment Guide or the recruitment staff. What if I get sick? There is always a possibility that a potential new member may become ill or have something happen to limit her participation in recruitment. Whatever the situation, don’t worry. Alert your Recruitment Guide and she will help you with whatever you need. The individual chapters are very understanding and will make the appropriate exceptions in these cases. To prevent illness, we recommend you eat before starting the day and feel free to ask for water or a drink when you are thirsty. Also, remember that the days are long, so get plenty of rest. I have a schedule conflict during recruitment week. Can I still participate? Greek Affairs will work with any woman who has a campus-related conflict such as marching band practice, Big Red Singers, or any of the varsity athletic teams. We do not make special accommodations for work conflicts. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact the Office of Greek Affairs as soon as possible. Tips • If you drop, break, or spill something, know that it happens often enough to be mentioned here and should not be a concern • If you are offered food or beverage, be practical. If you are hungry or thirsty, take it, but it is acceptable to decline if you are not. It is expected that you will become hungry or thirsty, so know that you will be offered refreshments by the chapters. • If you have to use the restroom, ask in the chapter house. Between parties your Recruitment Guide can escort you into a chapter house. • Be on time!
