Located at 302 S. Main Street future focus groups will plan the interior of the space. “We are still in the brainstorming phase,” said Alisa Inglett, owner of Your Design. The new facility will house different art groups such as pottery, fiber arts, children’s art, photography, calligraphy and much more. The actual site for the new center will not be started until the fall of 2016. Meanwhile the 211 S. Main address will continue to offer monthly programs featuring a local artist group. Alisa has agreed to come to our March CGO meeting to present more details of the proposed Art Gallery. Now is the time for you to create the calligraphy pieces you want to place in the show. Remember to price your items if you would like to offer them for sale. We have the entire month of May to allow the public to view our “Expressions of Calligraphy” --Marj Help Kids Learn to Love Letters! On Tuesday, March 18 CGO will sponsor and teach an afternoon Calligraphy Class at the Librarium (temporary Downtown Library location) for school children on Spring Break. We will teach the basics of Italic lettering and each child will be given a calligraphy marker to take home. A poem and booklet complete with a packet of hot chocolate; a solar plate embossed panel; tri‐fold cards with cut‐out windows; watercolor paintings; a zentangle poinsettia; a mixed media Christmas tree; stained glass windows; and old Saint Nick helped enhance lovely calligraphed messages on the cards in our 2013 Christmas card exchange. And the stories . . . What fun hearing how each card started as a germ of an idea and became a precious card to share . . . Stories of how obstacles were overcome, creativity triumphed and a warm satisfaction was ultimately achieved. Thanks to everyone who was able to participate in this labor of love and reveal the ideas that inspire us to start thinking now of ways to use beautiful calligraphed messages on next year’s cards. The 2014 theme, The Superlative Letter S, asks calligraphers to create a Graceful Envelope by symbolizing some sentiment starting with the letter S and addressing it in sublime or spirited script. See the Call for Entries for rules and a downloadable flier. Please spread the word among your artistic friends and local schools, because there are three separate categories for children. Deadline is March 24, 2014; there is no entry fee. The Smithsonian Institution's National Postal Museum created the contest in 1995. It delegated responsibility to the WCG in 2001, which partnered with the National Association of Letter Carriers to exhibit the winners. [email protected] The color of springtime is in the flowers; the color of winter is in the imagination. ~Terri Guillemets Spring Workshop… Maggie Gillikin & Leslie Winakur will come to Tulsa on April 26th & 27th for the long awaited “Book Making” workshop. This is the workshop that was cancelled two years ago because of inclement weather. The class project will be a hard cover, vertical pamphlet stitch book with a Japanese silk book cloth cover and leather spine. The paper will be Hahnemuhle Schiller, a nice white paper that has lovely tooth and takes all media quite well. They are also planning content. The lettering will be very user friendly. The technique and design options will be so much fun. There is no previous bookbinding experience necessary and the lettering will be for all levels of calligraphy experience. This will be two days of learning the art of bookmaking, calligraphy and fun. A $10 supply fee will be payable at the workshop. If you want to get extra supply kits to make additional books on your own, the cost of that kit will be $10. Please notify us how many kits you will want in advance so that they can be prepared. Only the kits ordered in advance will be available. A supply list will be emailed as soon as it becomes available. Cost of the workshop should be around $150. If you want to get on the list and secure your spot, a deposit of $75.00 is payable by April 1. After that date, enrollment will be opened to other guilds and to non‐ members. Because of my recent job change and his health I’ve decided to resign as CGO Workshop Chairman. It’s been a responsibility that’s brought me a lot of joy. I’m not going away, but I don’t feel I can give the position the attention it deserves. Vice President Patty Ridenhour has appointed Carol Francis as our new Workshop Chairman. Managing all the mini workshops has more than prepared her for the job. I will handle the Harvest Crittenden workshop, which is just around the corner. Carol will begin her chairmanship with the Leslie Winakur and Maggie Gillikin Handmade Book Workshop in April. Congratulations Carol, you’re going to love this job. Thank you for your commitment and for the reliability you bring to the guild. -- Kim Tackett For those of you who were lucky enough to have some of this treat at the last meeting, here’s a great recipe: Looking Forward… Becky’s Cheese Ball 2 - 8 oz. packages of Philadelphia Cream Cheese (softened) 1 - 15 1/4 oz. can of crushed pineapple . . . WELL DRAINED** 1 cup chopped pecans . . . PLUS some for the outside of the ball 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper 2 TBSP finely chopped onion (I use green onion) 1 TBSP Lawry's Seasoned Salt (I use slightly less) The Southwest Calligraphy Conference comes to Tulsa in January 2016. This annual conference gathers the Presidents and Workshop Chairs from Calligraphy Guilds in Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana for an exchange of ideas, problem solving and Calligraphic fun! Spencerian Script, a pointed pen script, is a style that was used in the United States from approximately 1850 to 1925 and was considered the American de facto standard writing style for business correspondence prior to the widespread adoption of the typewriter. This workshop is designed for everyone who has an interest in learning or bettering their proficiency in this vintage script. Developed by Platt Rogers Spencer during 'the Golden Age of Penmanship’, Spencerian Script is still very prevalent today. It provides endless possibilities for capital letter forms once you understand the underlying structure of Platt Rogers Spencer's system. We will have fun discovering all the ways to make a simple script really sing! HARVEST CRITTENDEN, Master Penman, has been a professional lettering artist for more than 30 years. Past owner of The Gold Leaf and founder of Acorn Arts, Harvest specializes in the Sacred Arts, calligraphy and illustration, illuminating words that inspire and support our ever-changing world. Harvest is a past winner of the Marjorie Pavelich Calligraphy Grant, and past president of The Michigan Association of Calligraphers. She has studied illumination and lettering in the United States and Italy and has served on the faculties of numerous regional, national and international conferences. Harvest also teaches for the St. Michael Institute of Sacred Arts, The Religious Sisters of Mercy, Hollanders School of Book and Paper Arts and offers workshops internationally. In 2010 Harvest was inducted as a Master Penman by IAMPETH at their annual convention. IAMPETH is an international, non-profit association dedicated to practicing and preserving the beautiful arts of calligraphy, engrossing and fine penmanship. IAMPETH is one of the oldest lettering arts associations in America. Harvest was the 10th person to be honored with the Master Penman designation since the program was started. In 2011 and 2012 Harvest was the co-director the Spencerian Saga in Ohio, along with Master Penman Michael Sull. In 2013 Harvest takes over as the new director of the Saga. Harvest and Michael are also co-writing a book about Engrossing and Illumination due to be out in 2014. Her work can be seen in museums, galleries and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. She has been published in numerous publications. SUPPLIES: -Nikko G or Zebra G nibs are recommended for beginners. More advanced students may prefer to use a more flexible nib. -An oblique penholder is recommended. If left-handed you may prefer to use a straight penholder depending on the amount of hook when you write. -McCaffery’s black ink, or other black ink suitable for pointed pen work. -Good quality translucent layout paper, Borden & Riley or Canson. -a mechanical pencil .5 with extra lead -a red pencil if you have one -a kneaded eraser -a few Viva paper towels and small container of glass cleaner for nibs.
