The journey to Niah National park will take an approximately 1.5 hours from Miri City. Upon arrival, register at the park’s headquarters. Then,
cross the Niah River by boat and proceed to the Museum. An hour plank-walk to the caves entrance – called The Great caves.
Niah National Park is a site of the Niah caves. Known to be one of the largest limestone caves in the world. The park covers 3,102 hectares of
forest & limestone. The peak of Gunung Subis (394 meters high) dominates the landscape. Explore the vastness of the Great Cave –
archaeologists have discovered evidence of man’s existence in Borneo dating as far back as 40,000 years ago. On display is a skull of a young
Homo sapien, some tools made out of stone, bone, iron and cave drawings. Anthropologists established that the Niahan lived in the caves from
40,000BC right up to 1,400AD.
More than half of the park is covered in limestone – limestone vegetation is the most common variety of plant life found here. The families of
Balsaminaceae and Begoniaceae are commonly seen at the entrance of the Traders’ and West Mouth Caves. Animals are not easy to spot;
however, one may be able to catch a glimpse of the park’s inhabitants including the long-tailed macaques, bulbuls, trogons, squirrels, flying

the Melinau Gorge. They would drag them 3km overland to the headwaters of the Terikan River, a tributary of Limbang. The ‘Kay an
