Eastmont High School Ladycat Basketball Parent/Player Manual 2013-2014

Eastmont High School Ladycat Basketball
Parent/Player Manual
2013-2014
Page 1 of 4 PLAYER CONDUCT: Don't do anything to embarrass yourself, family, team, and school. Remember that
short-term satisfaction leads to long-term consequences. At all costs, be responsible, be on time, and be
respectful.
SPORTSMANSHIP: Should any player conduct themselves in a manner that is inconsistent with our PLAYER
CONDUCT policy, including hazing, an immediate player/parent coaches meeting will be held to determine the
appropriate consequences. Should any player receive a technical foul or any other penalty during a contest, we
will follow the ejection guidelines that are in the 2013-14 Eastmont High School Sportsmanship Plan.
ACADEMICS: Academics must be a priority. We will do everything we can to help you succeed academically
while you are playing basketball, but you must put forth a legitimate effort. Teachers, counselors, and coaching
staff want to help you succeed, but you must want to do the job. Your academic progress (attendance, work
ethic, conduct) will be monitored. Players will be reminded to tell teachers of their athletic schedules, when they
have to miss class, and what they plan to do to get the materials they would miss. Parents are also strongly
encouraged to help coach's monitor academic progress. Parents are encouraged to obtain a syllabus from their
child for each course so parents are aware when project due dates and tests will occur. Please communicate with
the coach if you have any concerns regarding your child's academics. We believe that if you are successful
academically you will be successful on the court. We are not expecting straight A's rather we are looking for
effort.
Eastmont School District's academic requirement: All semester final grades must be a passing grade (A,B, C,
D). A failing or incomplete grade would terminate participation eligibility immediately for the remainder of the
season. Each and every player must meet WIAA academic eligibility of passing at least five classes at each six
week grading period. Student is ineligible until meeting academic standards.
TRAVEL: Remember that you represent your family, team, and school. Dress appropriately. Dress nice to all
home games, this includes wearing nice clothes to school and to and from home games. Our team sweats will be
worn when traveling on the road. Varsity players are to ride the bus to and from away games (we travel down as
a team, we will come back as a team). Exceptions will be made for Varsity players depending on circumstances.
JV, C, and 9th may ride home with parents if a signed permission slip is on file with the Athletic Director and
Coach. If players (JV, C, 9th) are to ride home with parents after their respected game, they cannot leave until
the Varsity game is over.
INJURIES: Lorrie Howe, school trainer, and her staff attend to our injuries. Mrs. Howe's approval is necessary
for a player to return to practice or games she attends. Players are expected to do what is necessary to minimize
down time. If injured during a practice or a game, do not leave the court or gym without consulting with both
your coach and Mrs. Howe or her staff. If you go to the doctor for an injury, you must get the doctor's written
release to return to practice and play.
COMMUNICATION WITH THE COACHES: Players are encouraged to express their concerns at any time,
as long as they don't take away from practice time or game routines.
PARENT COMMUNICATION WITH COACHES: Coaches will be available after practices if you need to
talk to one of us about issues that do not relate to basketball. We will not discuss issues about playing time,
game strategy, offensive and/or defensive philosophy. Please remember the 24 Hour Rule.
Page 2 of 4 ABSENCE FROM PRACTICE POLICY: Players are to attend each and every practice and game with these
exceptions; absence from school due to illness (means you are too sick to practice), school activities that a
player is directly involved with will be excused.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: Players are discouraged from participating in strenuous activities during basketball
season. Basketball season is long and very demanding. We want our athletes rested and ready to go for practices
and games. As long as activities do not interfere with practice, games, performance, and academics, players will
not be held accountable.
PLAYER SELECTION: The coaching staff will select players for the various teams after sufficient practices.
Team selections will be based on tryouts which include the following: basketball skills, strength, speed, hustle,
attitude, leadership, academics, and off season participation. Cuts are possible, and some may not make it to the
level they desire. Players may be moved (up or down) throughout our program during the season.
TECHNOLOGY USE: No cell phones will be allowed at practice. Cell phones will be permitted on the bus
before and after games for family calls only. No social media accounts will be accessed while on the bus, this
includes everything except texting and phone calls. Social Media accounts should be supervised by parents on a
regular basis. If the coach believes that such accounts are interfering with team chemistry and representing
Eastmont inappropriately, the team will be forced to shut down their accounts for the remainder of the season.
Please help our team be successful by getting to bed early, without the use of technology, on school nights and
game nights.
GAME DAY: For home games, all players will need to arrive at the gym 60 minutes before game time. Varsity
players will arrive 90 minutes before game time to support the Junior Varsity. JV, C, and 9th will support the
Varsity game before or after their respected games. Please get plenty of rest and eat a solid meal approximately
3-4 hours before the game. Remember to dress nice to and from home games. For away games, details will be
given as we travel.
VARSITY LETTER: Players will receive a Varsity Letter if they participate in at least 10 Varsity games
during the same season, do not quit before the last practice and/or game, and are actively participating in any
team activities/events. An exception may take place if a Varsity player is injured and not able to play in the
minimum number of games but continues to attend practice, team events, and does not quit.
PRACTICE GUIDELINES: Successful teams understand the role and the importance of practice. We want 2
hours of intensity and no excuses. We work hard all week to have fun during our games. Be on time, for there is
no substitute for promptness, enthusiasm and hard work. Relish the challenge of competing against and with
your teammates. There is absolutely nothing wrong with battling hard with a teammate. That makes practice fun
and rewarding. Never leave the floor without permission. Work hard and don't clown around. Clowning usually
is done to cover up an inadequacy. Watch the complaining. Complaining is usually an excuse and the person is
trying to deflect responsibility. Those who criticize the most, usually make the biggest mistakes or disappear in
the big games. Be friendly to all. Respect each other. Being vindictive or rude to someone only shows your true
colors. This is a team sport. Good teammates respect and look out for each other. In practice we move quickly,
we don't walk. If you practice quickly, you will develop physical quickness and mental quickness. When you
hear the whistle, stop immediately and listen so things don't have to be repeated. Basketball is a game of habits
so learn what you are being taught and apply it. If you don't apply what you've learned, then you've missed the
point of being taught. Practice being smart and simple, fancy play brings criticism. Being prepared will develop
your confidence. Discipline and self control come from being properly prepared.
Page 3 of 4 FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORES, AND JUNIORS: Congratulations on becoming a Ladycat. This year will be
a major transition, but if you are organized, flexible, adaptable, and have a sense of humor, things usually work
out. Your maturity level will be tested this year. Make the transition as simple as possible by doing what needs
to be done, when it has to be done, as well as it can be done, and do it that way all the time. On the court you
need to realize that the coaching staff thinks you can contribute. You need to believe that you can contribute.
Take care of 3 things: don't dwell on mistakes (a hard mistake is tolerable), have confidence in yourself ("woe is
me" pity parties are an excuse), finally you will be challenged on the court so step up, accept and deal with the
challenges.
SENIORS: For many of you, you have 1 or 2 years of Varsity experience. You should realize by now what it
takes to compete at this level. The key is your maturity. Are you mature enough to deal with pressure? Are you
mature enough not to continually make the same mistakes you made last year? Are you mature enough to push
yourself and others to be as good as you and the team can be? Are you mature enough to realize that there are
freshman, sophomores, and juniors who want your time? Are you mature enough to be accountable and
responsible? Your maturity will have a direct bearing on the success of this team. Your senior leadership should
include your ability to lead others by example both on and off the court. Have a strong personal character that
shows your willingness to be honest yet tactful with teammates and coaches. Your ability to take charge in
practices and before games to encourage and inspire yet hold teammates accountable. Most importantly be
intense and demand intensity in others!
TRAINING ROOM RULES:
1) There is no difference between being hurt and injured. You are expected to be at practice even if you are
injured or hurt. Be sure to communicate with coaches any physical problem you have immediately.
2) Arrange for treatment times before or after practice times. Being late to practice because of training
room is unacceptable.
3) If you are ill, you are expected to contact one of the coaches directly. Not a teammate or friend. If you
are too sick to go to class then you are too sick to practice.
4) If you have had previous ankle problems or you are on the Varsity team, then you are expected to have
your ankles taped or braced (Varsity) at all times when on the floor. This includes practice and games.
5) Communication between you, the trainer, and coaches is critical. No injured player should practice or
play until released by doctor and trainer.
6) Early care and proper training, diet, rest, and technique go a long way to prevent injury.
