Abbreviations T*AV—Air-Cooled T*TV—Twin-Cool Air-Cooled T*WV—Water-Cooled T*DV—Twin-Cool Water-Cooled T*EV—Energy Saving *Upflow (U)/Downflow (D) Uniflair LE Direct Expansion Installation Manual 5 Unit Overview Types of Cooling A precision air conditioner is designed to control environments for telecom rooms, Internet hubs, and data processing centers. The Uniflair DX series is available in the following types of cooling configurations: • Air-cooled Direct Expansion—Air cooled DX units extract heat from the room and transfer it to the outside using air cooled refrigerant heat exchangers (condensers). The room unit and external condenser form an autonomous sealed circuit once installed. Each refrigeration circuit must be connected to its remote air-cooled condenser with copper pipe. • Water-cooled Direct Expansion—In DX water-cooled units, the heat extracted from the room is transferred to water via a stainless steel brazed plate heat exchanger within the unit. The cooling water may be supplied from the mains supply, a cooling tower or a well (open circuit), or recycled in a closed loop cooled by external coolers. In a closed-loop system, an anti-freeze mixture of water and ethylene glycol is normally used. The water cooled units have refrigerant circuits that are charged and sealed in the factory and do not require site-installed refrigerant piping. • Twin Cool with chilled water cooling and air-cooled or water-cooled Direct Expansion—Twin-Cool DX units are typically deployed in installation sites where the chilled water source cannot be relied on for continuous service. In this application, function priority is given to the chilled water circuit. If the chilled water supply is insufficient, or if the water is not cold enough to dissipate the entire heat load, the microprocessor controller automatically starts direct expansion operation. Alternately, the unit can be configured to prioritize direct expansion operation and to activate chilled water operation in the event of a compressor shut-down. • Energy Saving with economizer cooling and water cooled Direct Expansion—Energy-Saving units provide an energy-efficient solution in cool or temperate climates. They are designed to provide significant reductions in operating costs and payback periods. The operating principle exploits the freecooling effect available when the outside temperature is lower than the inside temperature: the lower the outside temperature, the greater the energy saving. The microprocessor controller manages the operation of the unit automatically in three different situations: – Typical operation—In summer, the unit operates as a typical closed circuit, glycol-cooled system. – Partial Economization—As the external temperature decreases, the coolant can be used directly for the free-cooling of the air. In this application, the coolant is circulated in the coil inside the unit, and both the refrigerant circuit and the glycol circuit contribute to cooling, thus reducing the energy used by the compressor. – Total Economization—If the outside temperature increases further to where the coolant can dissipate the entire heat load from the room, then the refrigerant circuit is shut down completely, and the unit functions as a traditional chilled water unit with a modulating valve. 6 Uniflair LE Direct Expansion Installation Manual Airflow Configurations Upflow na4934a Upflow units are designed to distribute air through a supply plenum, pre-engineered duct system, or drop ceiling. Return air can enter the unit via the front, rear, or bottom of the unit based on configuration. A sub-base is required to allow access for power, water, and refrigerant connections on non-raised floor installations. FRONT RETURN WITH TOP SUPPLY BOTTOM RETURN WITH TOP SUPPLY FRONT RETURN WITH FRONT SUPPLY (PLENUM AND GRILLE) REAR RETURN WITH TOP SUPPLY Downflow/Underfloor na4933a Downflow units are designed to distribute air through a void under a raised access floor or a front supply subbase plenum when a raised floor is not available. Installation Types Downflow units are designed for installation on raised access flooring using appropriate floor stands—or in nonraised floor environments on a provided sub-base discharge plenum supplied by Schneider Electric. NOTE: Upflow units with air intake through the rear or front can also be installed on floors that are not raised (these systems require a sub-base or floor-stand). Installation on non-raised flooring Installation on non-raised flooring without using floorstands is only allowable on upflow models with rear or front air return. For installations without raised floors, a sub-base is required for routing piping and electrical wiring to unit. Installation on raised access flooring Installation on raised access flooring requires the support of a floor stand beneath the unit. The floor stand allows installation of the unit before the raised floor is installed, increases absorption of noise and vibrations, and facilitates connection of pipes and cables. Use a vibration pad under each leg to reduce vibration. Floor stand installation Using the floor stand, position the unit on the mounting frame and secure it using the M8 screw inserts found on the base of the unit. For details about floor stand installation, see Uniflair LE Accessories Manual. NOTE: Install a flexible seal (field supplied) at least 5 mm (0.2 in.) thick between the raised floor panels and the mounting frame, which should also be isolated from the metallic floor structure. 18 Uniflair LE Direct Expansion Installation Manual na4720a NOTE: The minimum raised floor height is 203.2 mm (8 in.). The pressure relief valve allows refrigerant to discharge during a fire or any situation that would result in the refrigerant system pressure exceeding the pressure rating of the relief valve. The pressure relief valve must be piped to the outside ambient air. When piping the valve, use Type L grade copper tubing (not supplied) and leave the exterior end open to the atmosphere and pointed away from any people or equipment. For details, consult local and national codes. na5013a OUTLET PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE UNIT FLOOR CUT-OUTS FOR ROUTING PIPE LIQUID RECEIVER Uniflair LE Direct Expansion Installation Manual 27 Refrigerant Piping Connections Air-cooled DX units must be connected to a remote outdoor condenser. Systems with remote outdoor condensers must have discharge and liquid lines from the equipment to the condenser. NOTE: Install all refrigerant lines in accordance with applicable industry guidelines as well as local and national codes and regulations. General guidelines • All refrigerant piping is type L ACR hard drawn copper pipes (soft copper is unacceptable). • All refrigerant lines/chilled water piping are free from debris. • All refrigerant lines should be as short and direct as possible. • All refrigerant piping joints must be made by brazing only; do not solder. NOTE: The recommended brazing alloy is AWS A5.8 BCuP-5. • All refrigerant pipes are installed with proper supports and approved refrigerant line clamps. NOTICE QUALIFIED PERSONNEL ONLY • The laying the lines and the refrigerant connections must be performed by a qualified technician. • All lines must be properly supported, insulated and isolated to avoid premature joint failures due to system vibrations. Failure to follow these instructions can result in equipment damage. NOTE: Isolate piping from structural surfaces using proper refrigeration/AC vibration clamps. NOTE: When brazing field-installed copper refrigeration lines, use a nitrogen purge to minimize contamination of the refrigeration system during the brazing process. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. Discharge lines must be sized such that refrigerant velocity in vertical lines is between 5 m/s (1000 ft/min) and 15 m/s (3000 ft/min). Refrigerant velocity in horizontal lines should be a minimum of 2.5 m/s (500 ft/min). Refrigerant velocity must be high enough to keep oil entrained to ensure the proper flow of oil throughout the system, in particular when operating at a partial load. If refrigerant velocity is too low, oil will not return to the compressor. If the refrigerant velocity is too high, both the noise level and pressure drop will increase. The acceptable pressure drops in discharge lines are up to 68.9 kPa (10 psi). NOTE: Give consideration to the full and half load (or tandem) of the compressor to ensure that the operational range stays within these limits. Horizontal discharge lines must be pitched downward at a minimum of 25.4 mm per 3048 m (1 in. per 10 ft) to ensure proper oil return.Trap the discharge line at the base of the vertical riser to prevent oil from returning back to the compressor during shutdown periods. 25.4 mm PER 3048 m (1 in. Refrigeration circuits WARNING QUALIFIED PERSONNEL ONLY Charging and maintaining the refrigeration circuit must only be performed by qualified personnel. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. The refrigeration circuit from the factory is pre-charged with nitrogen. Prior to evacuation, a gross pressure test should be performed to identify any leaks. Gross pressure test 1. Open any shut-off valves present in the system to ensure that all of the components will be tested. 2. Pressurize the system to 17.2 bar (250 psi) with nitrogen. 3. Leave the system pressurized for 24 hours. 4. After 24 hours, verify that no drop in pressure has occurred. After verifying the absence of leaks from the system, perform the system evacuation. System evacuation 1. Open any shut-off valves present in the system to ensure that all of the components will be evacuated. 2. Connect a vacuum pump to the service ports on the system piping. Using a core removal tool may reduce the time of the evacuation. 3. Pull the first vacuum down to 750 microns, then isolate the system from the vacuum pump. 4. Wait for an hour and check vacuum level. The vacuum should not rise above 1500 microns; if vacuum level exceeds this level, check system for leaks. 5. Break the vacuum with nitrogen. 6. Pull a final vacuum to below 500 microns. With the system isolated from the vacuum pump the system should not rise above 500 micron for a minimum of 2 hours. NOTE: Install a ball valve before the micron gauge to prevent damage to the micron gauge during charging. 7. After completing the vacuum seal, charge the system with refrigerant.
