Edmonds Woodway High School believes this is an integral piece of a student successfully completing high school and has designed a Culminating Project process that supports post- high school planning and exploration. It is our goal that you gain enhanced understanding of your academic and professional skills and interests through the Culminating Project. Through the portfolio, we hope that you reflect on skills you developed and challenges you overcame while in high school. Through the 20-hour project, we hope that you gain insight into a post- high school option that is a good fit for you. Through the presentation, we hope that you gain confidence in your public speaking skills and experience in discussing your greatest skills and abilities. THREE COMPONENTS OF THE CULMINATING PROJECT Portfolio – Project – Presentation 1. Student Portfolio Notebook Collect works in Grades 9-12, Complete in Grade 12 All students are required to complete a portfolio as part of their Culminating Project. Students will present their portfolio in a secure notebook – all students must have their documents in either a secure folder or three-ring binder. Students without access to these resources should contact Mrs. Wellington in the Career Center. Within the portfolio, students are required to include four pieces of best work, which may include: District & Building Anchor Tasks (DAT’s & BAT’s) Graduation Performance Tasks (GPT’s) Classroom Based Assessments (CBA’s) There are no required best works – you decide what is the best representation of your success! The portfolio also includes your Letter of Intent, Mentor Verification Form, resume, High School and Beyond Plan, and presentation outline. The Portfolio will be checked off by your English teacher, the IB Coordinator, or the School to Work Coordinator in the weeks prior to the final presentation. See page 11 for complete portfolio instructions. 2. Field of Study Experience / Project Complete in Grade 12 Each student must complete a 20-hour project. There are three different types of projects: 1. Extension of a former/current class project *Must be an extension of something already assigned; a regular class assignment/project will not count as the Culminating Project. 2. Extended career shadow 3. Independent project The project must be related to student’s chosen Field of Study and be connected to student’s post high school plans. Project examples can be found on page 5. 3. Culminating Project Presentation Complete in Grade 12 Each student will give a twenty minute presentation on April, date TBD 2013; each student must speak for a minimum of 15 minutes with 5 minutes for questions and answers; speech should be broken down using the approximate times listed below: 6-7 minutes discussing student’s “academic journey” through chosen Field of Study and other related classes that prepared student for FOS project while showing contents of Portfolio 6-7 minutes discussing FOS project and experience 3-4 minutes connecting FOS work to student’s post high school plans A sample speech outline is included on page 14. * All full IB Diploma students will present their Extended Essay as their Culminating Project. Contact person is the IB Coordinator, Mr. Quinn. * All 12th Graders will learn about CP through their English class and will practice presentations individually. Contact person is Mrs. Wellington, School to Work Coordinator. 2 Edmonds Woodway High School – Culminating Project Student Manual, 2013-14 GENERAL GUIDELINES Common Terms & Definitions Culminating Project The entire process of completing the Culminating Project graduation requirement. This includes choosing a mentor, submitting the Letter of Intent, completing the 20-hour project, writing the presentation outline, completing and submitting the portfolio, and completing and passing the presentation. Field of Study / Area of Emphasis Students should declare a Field of Study during their sophomore year. The Field of Study provides the basis for your Culminating Project. The Fields of Study are: Arts & Communications Business & Marketing Engineering & Technology Health & Human Services Science & Natural Resources. Students must discuss their Field of Study during their presentation, and relate it to their project and their post- high school plans. If students do not know their Field of Study, they should identify an Area of Emphasis in the courses they took over their high school career by recognizing the majority of courses they took within a specific area. The Area of Emphasis should fit into one of the Field of Study categories listed above. Letter of Intent This is the document that declares your project title, scope, and connection with your Field of Study. Your mentor must sign the Letter of Intent. The Letter of Intent can be found on page 9. Mentor Verification Form This is the document you use to track your 20 hours of project time. Once the 20 hours are completed, your mentor fills out and signs the short evaluation at the bottom of the document acknowledging the project completion. The Mentor Verification Form can be found on page 10. Portfolio Each student must complete a final product portfolio. This portfolio will include: Four pieces of best work Letter of Intent Mentor Verification Form High School and Beyond Plan Resume Presentation outline Once the portfolio has been signed off, you may sign up for your presentation time. Your portfolio will be presented during your presentation. The Portfolio Check Off Sheet can be found on page 12. Presentation Each student must pass the 20-minute presentation to have passed the Culminating Project. Students are responsible for presenting for at least 15 minutes, and the panel will engage in five minutes of questions and answers. Students must have their portfolio completed prior to signing up for a presentation time. All presentations will be held on April 25, 2014. Visual Aids Visual aids should assist in the demonstration, explanation, and presentation of your project. Each student must have a minimum of two visual aids to pass their presentation. Details about what qualifies as a visual aid can be found on page 13. 3 Edmonds Woodway High School – Culminating Project Student Manual, 2013-14 Required Milestones and Timeline The most important step you can take to having a successful Culminating Project is completing all project milestones on time. Topics Not Allowed Edmonds Woodway High School is committed to keeping you well and safe as you complete your Culminating Project. As such, we require that all projects keep students on the ground as well as financially unburdened. Students cannot do a project that takes them in the air or underwater. Nor can students select a project that requires expensive resources that they do not already have access to. Projects that cause harm to any other person, animal, or thing will also not be allowed. Projects involving risky activities must be approved by Mr. Johnson, Assistant Principal, your parents, and the Edmonds School District. Any questions about the project meeting school guidelines can be directed to Mr. Robert Johnson, Assistant Principal. 6 Edmonds Woodway High School – Culminating Project Student Manual, 2013-14 PROJECT MENTOR INFORMATION Selecting a Mentor What is a mentor? A mentor is someone who is an expert in their field, has knowledge and experience in your topic, and who can provide support and guidance through your 20-hour project. What can a mentor do for me? They can answer questions, provide guidance, provide encouragement and motivation, give information on how to access resources, help you develop relevant research topics and research questions, and just provide general support. How do I find a mentor? Ask people! People are your best resource. Ask friends, family, teachers, etc. if they know anybody in your topic area who would be willing to mentor you. Search in the community for someone working in the field. If you have been involved with an organization doing community service, they may be of help to you. Mrs. Wellington is a great source for community contacts – come by the Career Center and ask! How involved does the mentor need to be? You and your mentor will determine your mentor’s level of involvement. Your mentor needs to be aware of how you are spending your 20 hours, but they do not need to be with you for every moment of those hours, unless you are completing a job shadow. Your mentor will be responsible for verifying that you have completed the 20 hours by signing your Mentor Verification Form. Who can be a mentor? Any adult with experience in your topic area would make a great mentor. It is important that his person is available to meet when you are available. Who can NOT be a mentor? Parents and relatives cannot be mentors. No special circumstances can be made. Can I have more than one mentor? No – you will have only one designated mentor. If you plan on shadowing more than one person, you must still have one consistent mentor who verifies the completion of your 20 hours. Does my mentor have to live in the community? Because you will be meeting with your mentor, it is important that you have good transportation between you and your mentor. It is wise to choose a mentor who is located near you. 7 Edmonds Woodway High School – Culminating Project Student Manual, 2013-14 Students – give this page to your project mentor Culminating Project Mentor Information 2013-14 – For Project Mentors We are so grateful that you have agreed to be a Mentor for an Edmonds Woodway High School senior. All seniors at EWHS are required to complete a Culminating Project in order to graduate. Your wisdom, expertise and guidance are invaluable contributions to the student, our school, and our community. Again, thank you for providing this valuable service. We know that you probably have some questions about your role and the student’s responsibility. We hope that the following information will be helpful to you. If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact: Jillian Wellington School-to-Work Coordinator 425-431-6122 or [email protected] What is a Culminating Project? All graduating seniors in the state of Washington are required to complete a Culminating Project that supports the student’s post- high school planning and exploration. At Edmonds Woodway High School, each student is required to complete a 20 hour project and deliver a 20-minute presentation about this experience. Who can be a Mentor? Any adult who has expertise in the student’s area of interest and is not related to the student can be a Mentor. A Mentor should have a background in the area of the student’s Culminating Project. What responsibilities does the Mentor have? A Mentor should be available to the student as needed to: answer questions, provide training and guidance, and evaluate the student’s progress. In addition, Mentors are asked to verify the completed 20 hours by signing the student-provided Mentor Evaluation Form. In some cases, an EWHS Culminating Project staff member will call the Mentor to verify a student’s completion of the 20 hours. What responsibilities does the student have? The student is responsible for working with the Mentor to design the scope of the 20 hours. The student is additionally responsible for behaving professionally by honoring the rules and regulations of the organization, and by honoring the schedule made to complete the hours. The student is responsible for communicating with the Mentor about the work being completed and/or about any problems or concerns. Finally, the student is responsible for providing the supervisor with the Mentor Evaluation Form to fill out. What if things are not working out as planned? If at any time you feel dissatisfied with the student’s progress or level of commitment, please call School-to-Work Coordinator, Jillian Wellington, at 425-431-6122. You are under no obligation to continue working with a student in the unlikely event that the student is not following through on commitments. Summary The Mentor serves as an expert in the field a student is exploring for Senior Project. It is the student's responsibility to initiate and maintain contact with the supervisor. Mentors may advise in the design of a project since they are experts in their fields and are resources for students. However, it is not the Mentor’s responsibility to do the project for the student. The Mentor helps guide the student's learning by asking thoughtful questions, making him/her aware of resources available and providing access to information. Mentors should be willing to make themselves available to their students on a regular basis. Mentors may teach students new skills or give information that would not necessarily be available through regular school activities. Mentors will be asked to verify that the student completed all 20 hours. 8 Edmonds Woodway High School – Culminating Project Student Manual, 2013-14 Culminating Project Letter of Intent Student Name: ______________________________ Field of Study: ______________________ Type of Project to be completed: _____ Class Project Extension (CPE) _____ Extended Career Shadow (ECS) _____ Independent Project (requires special approval from Mr. Johnson) Course Name where project will be completed if CPE:_______________________________ Project Title: ________________________________ Adult Mentor name: __________________________ Adult Mentor title:_______________________ Adult Mentor phone number:____________________ Signature: _____________________________ Special Approval for Independent Projects (Mr. Johnson): _________________________________ Project Explanation: ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Connections between this Project, my Field of Study / Area of Emphasis, and my Post High School Plan: ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ I intend to complete my Culminating Project this year with the Mentor designated above.
