Summer
The Benyamini School of Ceramic Art is
a professional center offering courses
for beginners, artists and designers who
want to work within the bounds of the
ceramic material. The school has a team
of professional teachers running a yearround program of courses in practical and
theoretical aspects of ceramics as well as
workshops, lectures and master classes
with artists from Israel and abroad. The
summer semester, July – August 2015,
includes a wide range of topics and classes
suitable for beginners just starting out,
people with experience working with clay
and professionals. This year we will offer
five masterclasses running consecutive

including decorating techniques. No previous experience required.

A continuation of the beginners throwing class to broaden basic skills and techniques

culminate in experiencing a Raku firing.

Engobes are ‘ceramic paints’ made of clay, water and colorants. The use of engobes broadens
the ceramic palette and offers numerous options. Through demos and experiments on the
wheel or hand building we will experience several techniques including brushing, spraying,
resist, shiny, mat and more. Participants will receive engobe recipes. Experience in wheel
throwing or hand building required.

Clay slabs have become accepted practice for building 3 dimensional sculptural and functional
objects. The participants will learn to make slabs, to understand the steps in using them from
wet to hard, to make objects and texture them. We will learn to plan the work, make cuts and
joins, use tools and sculptural aids. Last meeting will focus on glazing. Suitable for all levels.

A sculpture class focusing on still life, objects as well as fauna and flora. We will compare
manmade to nature, the relationship between them as well as basic tenets such as form and
volume in sculpture. We will explore form and shape and become familiar with artists who
sculpted still life in the 20th century examining the relationship between art and nature, clay,
architecture and daily life. Suitable for all levels.

Nerikome is a contemporary Japanese term for using different colored ceramic materials
found in places such as Egypt, China, Japan and England. This technique uses slabs of
different color clays that are layered and then cut to create 2D and 3D objects by hand or
wheel. Nerikome is a good way to achieve unique color effects. Suitable for all levels.

Spontaneous and intuitive texture used for exact geometric forms is common amongst
ceramic makers. The workshop will focus on making random textured surfaces to build
sculptural and functional forms. We will use wet plaster to create a dynamic surface, dip
objects in plaster, and make a press mould. Participants will then create tiles and geometric
textured objects. Suitable for all levels

A hands-on experience of glass using a ceramic kiln to make small glass objects. Firing glass
in a kiln may be a complex process requiring great skill and expertise as the object gets
larger. This workshop will focus on sand casting and open faced moulds and lay out the
basics of casting glass in a kiln. No previous experience required.

Ceramic industrial production enables making a model from various materials, followed
by making a plaster mould and then reproduction of ceramic items for functional vessels,
sculptural objects, etc. This intense workshop allows participants to learn industrial work
process including making a model and building a mould, casting in clay and altering the form.
Experience is not required.
