Beulah Park Heads Down the Stretch
Don’t miss your chance to experience a Grove City landmark for the last time as Beulah
Park prepares to close it gates after 91 years of Thoroughbred racing. The last races on
the historic track run Saturday, May 3, Kentucky Derby Day.
Beulah Park was founded in 1923 by the Capital City Racing Association as Ohio's first
Thoroughbred racetrack. But the tradition dates back further: the land was developed in
the late 1800s as a recreational area that hosted baseball games, concerts, the Franklin
County Fair and the Grove City Community Fair, when the first races were held.
In addition to its rich racing tradition, the venue has hosted many events and concerts
throughout the years, serving as the hub of an active social scene in Grove City and
attracting many visitors to the area. It was home to many memorable Grove City Balloons
& Tunes and Blast at Beulah events.
A celebration is planned for Sat., 4/26, from noon to 5 p.m., to showcase the history
of the park and give patrons the chance to experience live racing. A limited number of
tickets are available for purchase at the Grove City Parks and Recreation Department,
4035 Broadway, for $10, with proceeds benefiting the LifeCare Alliance Meals-on-Wheels
program. Featured speakers are Mayor Richard L. “Ike” Stage, B.J. Roach and Gary
Johnson, who will share live racing information and betting tips.
For information about the 4/26 event, call 614-277-3050 or visit www.GroveCityOhio.gov.
Festivities also are planned for Kentucky Derby Day. Contact Beulah Park at
614-871-9600 or visit www.beulahpark.com for more information.
The park is open to regular patronage on both days.

The mission of the Grove City Division of Police is to serve and protect all by providing
professional law enforcement services in partnership with the community.
Smart911
Grove City was the first community in Ohio to offer Smart911, a service allows a resident
to create a free safety profile for his/her household that includes information important for
911 dispatchers and first responders to know.
A Rx Drug Drop Box is available in the
Grove City Safety Complex lobby for
anonymous disposal of medicine (solid
only) day or night. See page 3.
Operation Medicine Drop is Sat.,
4/26; 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Fire Station
201, 3650 Hoover Road. See page 3.
National Night Out is Tue., 8/5;
6-8 p.m. Neighborhood is to be
determined. See page 6.
When you make an emergency call to 911 in Grove City or another participating community
nationwide from any phone associated with your profile (including cell phones), your
information is displayed on the 911 call taker’s screen. Dispatchers share it with first
responders when details can save seconds or even minutes – and lives. The service is
private and secure, and you control the information in your profile regarding you, other
members of your household, your residence (e.g. what floor your apartment is on), the
type and number of pets and vehicles.
S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement
Together) meets at 1 p.m. the second
Tue. at the Evans Center. See page 42.
No one expects an accident, but if one happens, you want responders as prepared as
possible. Knowing medical conditions such as mobility issues, allergies, Alzheimer’s,
diabetes, epilepsy, blindness and deafness; how many people and pets may be in your
burning home; your address if injured in a car wreck; or any other special circumstances;
makes responders more effective and can speed up your treatment.
Grove City Police
Crime Mapping
Crime Mapping is a tool accessible by the public via the Grove City Division of Police website
at Police.GroveCityOhio.gov. Updated daily, this service provides valuable information
regarding recent crimes including type, date and time of day. Search for crime information

Grove City Division of Police e-newsletter to receive Crime Alerts.
Active Shooter Response Training
Ever wondered, what if an active shooter entered your workplace? Where you are
shopping? Your place of worship? Would you know what to do? Does your employer have
a plan? Do you? The Grove City Division of Police has trained specialists and plans to offer
Active Shooter Response Training for businesses and individuals to facilitate training for
dangerous situations. If interested, contact the Grove City Division of Police Community
Services Bureau at 614-277-1740 for training dates.

A Mayor’s Point of Pride:
Community Volunteers Energize Grove City
Grove City has a proud tradition of community involvement. This has enabled the city to
maintain a close-knit, small-town feel even as it has experienced amazing growth over the
past three decades. As Mayor Stage expressed in his column, “Grove City has many things
to be proud of, one I consider exceptional is the immense city pride demonstrated by our
citizens and their amazing willingness to give back to the city and to those in need.”
An indicator of the level of engagement is the sheer number of volunteers who step
forward in Grove City to help those in need financially, to keep our community clean and
beautiful, to safeguard and celebrate our history, to make sure our youth stay active and
healthy and so much more.
Summer is when these organizations and the individuals who support them are most
visible in the community, which makes it a great time to recognize them for all they do.

Grove City’s Newest Park: Eagle Pavilion Rental
3670 Discovery Dr., Fryer Park
Breck Community Park
3005 Demorest Road
The new Breck Community Park opens this
spring formed from the Demorest Road
Retention Area.
The 22-acre park features off-leash dog
areas, water fountains, off-street parking,
walking and biking trails as well as a pond.

The park is named for William Foster Breck,
the founder of Grove City. Breck purchased
land in the area in 1846, two years before
Harrisburg Turnpike was completed. In
1851, Breck worked with George Weygandt,
William Sibray and Jeremiah Smith to plat
15.5 acres into “Grove City,” where the
Town Center is now located. Breck operated
a 20-room hotel, a brick foundry, a post
office and a sawmill in the new village.

VOLUNTEER YOUTH COACHES
Grove City Parks and Recreation offers team recreational experiences for community youth with the important assistance of many
volunteer baseball, volleyball and basketball coaches.
You don’t have to be an expert to help! The department covers the cost of the certification required for head coaches (submit to
Parks and Recreation Office to receive your credit). Baseball coaches are certified through Little League® and basketball coaches
through the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (available online). Coaches must complete free, online instruction on sports
concussions. Many opportunities also exist for assistant coaches to help.
To be a volunteer coach, contact the Parks and Recreation office and complete a coaching application.
Any person assisting with on-field/court activities is required to pass a background check.
