OBJECTIVE The objective of this manual is to describe the process to be followed in organising the “Young IT Professional (YITP) Awards”, which can be a reference guide for all the Regional Vice Presidents, EXECOM Members, Awards Committee and Sponsors. This will also be guiding tool for all the Regional and National rounds. It provides an overview of all the awards that are instituted or given by the CSI to acknowledge and motivate individuals and organizations working in the field of IT. The content of this document will be updated for continuous improvement as when the need arises. SECTION A: CSI NATIONAL AWARDS 1. ABOUT CSI Formed in 1965, the Computer Society of India (CSI) has been instrumental in guiding the Indian IT industry down the right path since its formative years. Today, the CSI has 69 chapters all over India, 358 student branches, and more than 70,000 members, including India’s most famous IT industry leaders, brilliant scientists and dedicated academicians. The mission of the CSI is to facilitate research, knowledge sharing, learning and career enhancement for all categories of IT professionals, while simultaneously inspiring and nurturing new entrants into the industry and helping them to integrate into the IT community. The CSI is also working closely with other industry associations, government bodies and academia to ensure that the benefits of IT advancement ultimately percolate down to every single citizen of India. 2. CSI AWARDS To encourage innovation and indigenous development in the field of Information Technology CSI has instituted a number of awards for both members and non-members who are trying to achieve excellence in the field of Computer Science and Technology. 3. AWARDS COMMITTEE To maintain impartiality and objectivity CSI had constituted an Award Committee which comprises the Past President as Chairman along with the Senior Regional Vice President and the two senior Divisional Chairmen as members. 1|Page Authority: It shall assist the Executive Committee (ExeCom) of CSI i. In developing an adequate awards structure for recognising excellence in professional activities in fields of interest of the CSI. ii. In administering the awards decided upon by the ExeCom. iii. In identifying those members considered to be exceptionally suitable for elevation to the Fellow Grade and provide citations for those elected. The Committee shall be guided in these matters by the Fellowship Guidelines as approved by the ExeCom. 4. CSI ANNUAL NATIONAL AWARDS Every year the CSI confers on its members the annual awards at the Annual Convention. There are various awards which are given to the individuals and chapters for their remarkable contribution towards the society and IT industries. 4.1. Life Time Achievement Award The Life Time Achievement Award has been instituted in the year 2010, with an intention to honour distinguished personalities who made outstanding contributions to the society and IT industry in their life. CSI felicitated Padma Bhushan Shri F C Kohli – founder member of CSI, also known as “Father of Indian IT Industry”, for his contribution to the Computer Society of India and development of IT Industry in the country, during CSI 2010 at Mumbai. Prof. H.N. Mahabala, Prof. PVS Rao, Dr. N Vittal were awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards during CSI Convention 2012. Mr. Hemant Sonawala, Maj Gen (Retd.) A Balasubramaniam and Prof. V. Rajaraman were awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards during CSI 2011 at Ahmedabad. 4.2. Fellowship Awards The highest grades of membership of the CSI are the `Honorary Fellow' and 'Fellow grade’. 4.2.1 Honorary Fellowship Award The Honorary Fellowship Award was instituted in the year 1991. The grade of ‘Honorary Fellow' shall be conferred by the CSI upon a distinguished personality of international repute. It is not necessary that a person who is nominated for this award should be a member of the Society. 2|Page A Search Committee comprising immediate Past President, as Chairman, preceding two Past Presidents and the current President as members is formed by the Executive Committee to identity and nominates a distinguished personality of international repute for this award. The Chairman of the Education and Awards (E&A) Committee in his capacity as the Immediate Past President will invariably be the Chairman of the Search Committee. Huskey 4.2.2 The Fellowship Awards The Fellowship Awards are the highest awards that the Society has instituted in the year 1979, with an intention to honour distinguished personalities who have served the Society with dedication, devotion and faith or those who have excelled in fields related to the Society. The grade of ‘Fellow’ is one of special distinction and is conferred only by nominations from Executive Committee (ExeCom) and Fellows of the CSI. The maximum number of ‘Fellow’ awards in a year will be restricted to four only. In exceptional cases, this number may be increased to five in a particular year. 3|Page 4.3. CSI Service Awards These awards directly or indirectly motivate Chapters and the members to be active and to encourage women and young members to join and contribute to CSI and its objectives. These awards are given in following categories: a. Chapter Patron Award: This award would be given to a life member, who has contributed significantly over many years to the Chapter activities. This person should have been a CSI member for at least 10 years. b. Significant Contribution Award: This award would be given to an existing member, who has contributed significantly to the Chapter activities at least for the last 2 years. c. Active Participation Award i. Woman Member: This award would be given to an existing woman member who has during the last year actively participated in the Chapter activities. ii. Young Member: This award would be given to an existing member, under 28 years, who has during the last year actively participated in the Chapter activities. iii. Student Member: This award would be given to an existing student member, who has during the last year actively participated in the Chapter / Branch activities. 4.4. CSI Best Chapter Award This award is given at national/regional level to the best chapter for the year. Depending on the size and location of the chapters they are classified into various categories: a. Category-I: Chapters in Metro and ‘A’ grade cities viz. Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad having voting members more than 500. b. Category-II: Chapters in other cities having voting members more than 200 and less than 500. c. 4.5. Category-III: Chapters having voting members up to 200 CSI Memorial Awards The Society has instituted a number of commemorative CSI Awards to honour the distinguished personalities or their dear ones, who have been actively associated with the CSI, in the past and are 4|Page now no more, with a view to reward members who excel in one form or the other. These awards are as follows and are generally given during the Annual Convention of CSI. a. Vandana Goyal Memorial Award: The award is only conferred upon a female candidate standing 1st in the NSTPC Test. This award has been instituted by Dr M L Goyal of Delhi, father of Vandana Goyal who passed away suddenly in the road accident. b. Mr. Satish Doshi Memorial Award: This award is given to the team selected from all over India, who will be representing India in SEARCC Competition held every year. 4.6. Best Student Branch Award CSI also has student branches all over the country. The society has instituted Best Student Branch award to acknowledge the student branch in the regions. 4.7. Best Chapter Newsletter Award This award is given regional wise for the best chapter newsletter. 5. CSI NIHILENT E-GOVERNANCE AWARDS The Computer Society of India has instituted a series of awards for recognizing the contributions made in the field of e-Governance in the country. These awards have been sponsored by Nihilent Technologies Ltd., and conducted by CSI-SIGegov. The awards are given for recognizing the efforts made in e-Governance area at the State, Department, District and Project level. 6. CSI AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN IT These awards are given to individuals and organisations/institutes that are related to Information Technology and have worked towards development of IT sector with the bestintended delivery to the target segment. 7. GROUPS OF MEMBERS CSI members can be part of any divisions of their interest and can associate themselves to a particular region as per their convenient location. ABOUT CSI YITP AWARDS The Young IT Professional Awards are instituted to encourage Researchers, IT professionals, Academicians, Consultants, Entrepreneurs and IT Practitioners in an Organization, or as individuals below 35 years of age in service/ support/training function in the field of Information Technology. These awards are instituted both at the national as well as at the regional levels. The winners of the each region will qualify for competing in the final national round. 2. OBJECTIVES To recognize the significant contribution(s) made by a person as mentioned above in IT profession. To motivate upcoming professionals and enhance the prestige of the profession by enabling them to exercise their skills and competencies in the best possible and innovative manner. To directly or indirectly contribute towards the improvement of professional effectiveness in different spheres of life. To motivate young men and women to imbibe the entrepreneurial spirit and thereby encourage more and more people to venture into entrepreneurship, and To encourage contribution in boosting the economy of the country through entrepreneurship. 3. ELIGIBILITY Any individual below 35 years of age (on 31 st March, 2013 of the year in which the award will be given), who are either working professionals, entrepreneurs or researchers and has made significant innovation in the areas of research, academics, and IT applications and services to bring improvement in service, support and training in the field of Information Technology. Only those individual with minimum of 3 years and maximum 12 years of experience as on 31st March, 2013 can participate in this competition. 7|Page An individual or a team of maximum 3 members meeting above eligibility criteria can be nominated by the organisation or by the fellow of CSI. 4. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE Participants can be from the Institutes, Business organizations, Research Institutes and Interns from incubation centres of universities/recognised institutes. 5. NOMINEES Following are the criteria for nominees: The nominee should be practicing as an IT Professional working in public, private sector, community, social service organizations, research organisation or incubation centres of Universities/recognised institutes. The nominee should have high degree of technical/entrepreneurial qualities as reflected in his management style, innovativeness and leadership. The nominee should have demonstrated outstanding entrepreneurial ability and innovativeness in the choice of products, technology, location, etc. and achieved high levels of performance and growth for his organization in the recent years. The contribution to be recognized for the YITP Award will be outstanding achievement(s) of professional or a kind of work, which will benefit a sizeable group of people, irrespective of their category. While the work concerned may relate to one or more functional area (s), the emphasis will be on integrated approach to professional effectiveness. IT Professionals with high potential are encouraged. Total years of experience The type and range of products and services dealt with Innovative practices, if any, adopted Other factors like Overall personality, Involvement in training and development, Extent of cross functional experience/expertise, Participation in public/institutional activities and programmes, publication and other activities of a public nature. 8|Page 6. CATEGORY The nominations will be categorise in the following divisions in the respective themes: Division 1: Hardware: Hardware development, Cloud implementation Division 2: Software: Information Security, Artificial Intelligence, BFSI, Manufacturing, Retail, Multi lingual applications, Applications for rural development, Medicine or Health care Equipment’s Division 3: Applications : Multi lingual applications, Applications for rural development, Medicine or Health care Equipment’s, Fashion industry / art, Public transport, BFSI, Manufacturing, Retail, Gaming Division 4: Communications: Telecom, Mobile computing Division 5: Education and Research: E- learning, Animation Industry Young professionals working on multi-language applications and devices, professionals who have set-up cloud based infrastructure or service, develop various applications / projects indigenously implemented including in the area of education/e-learning, information security products/inventions, etc. can also participate. 7. CRITERIA FOR AWARDS i. The most outstanding technology project of any kind, completed during the year 2012 / 2013 (project duration could be of 2 -3 years from the start date) within an organisation will be judged for following criteria by the selection committee. ii. Award will be presented to organisations and to project team that has achieved exceptional results through their outstanding implementation of technology and their high levels of professionalism in IT The nominations will be judged against following key criteria: 1. Criticality of IT Usage: The application cannot be effective by itself; it has to be followed up with equality effective and innovative usage, for instance, Electronic Commerce. 2. Improvement of Customer Service: Enabling faster delivery of the products or services, as per specific customer choices. 9|Page 3. Innovation: Has the project introduced new or leading-edge technologies, supported a new way of working or pioneered an original change in business processes? Has the project stimulated new thinking, or laid the foundations for further innovation? 4. Return on Investment: Has the project measurably and substantially improved the organisation's ability to achieve its core goals? Has it bestowed a significant competitive advantage, or dramatically enhanced the services offered to customers, staff or partners? Have there been spin-off benefits of the project? 5. Quality of management: Was the project completed on time and within budget? Did the project deliverables match or exceed the initial objectives? How resourcefully were obstacles overcome, and what lessons were learned to improve the management of future projects? 6. Impact a. Organisations: What measures have been used to assess or quantify the success of the project? How has the project demonstrated technology's role as a vital enabler in improving organisational excellence, competitiveness or quality of service? How will the project's deliverables be developed, or how will they support future growth or change in the organisation? b. Society: The impact and influence of the IT solution on the society at large. This would include the number of people deriving benefit from the solution; its impact in terms of India’s global competitiveness; how it helps in spreading awareness about IT among the masses and also how it helps create a climate for better appreciation and usage of IT. 8. SELECTION PROCESS 8.1 Regional Round 1. Shortlisting of nomination will be done to restrict the number of entries in final Regional Round (maximum up to 8 entries). 2. In the final Regional Round, short-listed nominees will make oral presentation followed by a Q&A session in the presence of selection committee on the day of contest. 3. The winners will be awarded Regional trophy, cash prize and certificate in the category of Winner and Runners-up. A special mention cash prize and a certificate will be given to the third winner (if any). 10 | P a g e 4. The winners of regional round are eligible to contest in the national round 5. The selection committee decision will be final and binding to all participants 8.2. National Round The winners of the regional contest will participate in the national round. Winner and runner up participate in national YITP competition organized by HQ. They will make oral presentation followed by a Q&A session in the presence of selection committee on the day of contest. No changes in the nomination submitted are allowed between regional and national rounds. National Awards will be presented on 6th March,2014 which is CSI Foundation day at Ahmedabad, after the National Round, which is hosted by CSI, Ahmedabad Chapter. 9. HOW TO APPLY 1. Individual or a team not exceeding three individuals can apply. Additional member can join the team in special circumstances. 2. Nomination should reflect a specific achievement, innovation, algorithm, value-addition in the work of project undertaken during the project tenure ending 2012 / 2013. 3. Nomination should be supported by the institution or the organisation to which the applicants are attached. 4. Nominations nominated by any CSI Fellow are also eligible. 5. Nominations should be original and not published prior to the event. 6. Nominations should be made in the prescribed format available on the CSI-website: www.csiindia.org on or before the last date of submission for the specific region. 7. REGIONAL ROUNDS The Regional rounds will be held at the CSI Chapter of the following regions during October, 2013 to February, 2014. The host chapter will announce the schedule for the particular region. SELECTION COMMITTEE The selection committee will comprise of CSI ExeCom member, Fellows and past Presidents of CSI, leading IT Professional, Academicians and Scientist. The number of members in the selection committee will be 3 or 5. The Regional YITP Coordinator/National YITP Convener and 12 | P a g e host chapter chairman will invite the above in the committee. The member of the selection committee should not have the conflict of interest. The selection committee member of regional round will not be considered for the national round. The chairman of the selection committee will be identified by the Regional YITP Coordinator and host chapter chairman. The names of the Selection Committee Members should be identified before issuing the Call for nominations so that Selection Committee Member names can be announced. 11.1. Judging Process Each nomination will be judged by the selection committee. The selection process shall be based on: 1. Receipt of Nomination with fees. 2. Short listing of entries by Selection Committee. 3. Presentations by short listed entries to the Selection Committee 4. Final Awards will be based on joint evaluation by the selection committee as per the evaluation criteria. (Annexure – A.8) 5. The selection committee will reserve the right to seek additional information from the nominated entries during the evaluation process. 6. The final recommendation of awards will be made by the selection committee on the basis of the information available to them in the nomination form and presentations made by the applicants. 12. REGIONAL AND NATIONAL AWARD REGIONAL YITP AWARD (FOR EACH REGION) Winner : Trophy + Rs. 10,000/- and certificate Runner up : Trophy + Rs. 5,000/- and certificate Special mention : Rs. 3,000/- and certificate : A trophy + Rs. 50,000/- and a certificate 1 runner up : A trophy + Rs. 25,000/- and a certificate Special mention : Rs. 15,000/- and certificate NATIONAL AWARDS Winner st 13 | P a g e 13. REGIONAL ROUND SCHEDULES Category and criteria for judging the application finalisation. Content for the Application Form. Curtain Raiser: Announcement of the YITP Awards in CSI Communication and portal. Application Last Date Submission. Regional Dates for organizing YITP. Receiving the winners list from all regions for final round. The National round will be held at one of the Chapters. CSI National Young IT Professional Award will be presented on the same day. 14. BUDGET Regional Round Each region/host chapter will host the regional round of YITP awards. The income will be from application fees and sponsorship from IT companies, service providers, academic institutes and industry. The expenses related to regional event including cash prize to winning team / winner, venue, publicity, mementos to selection committee members, local hospitality, travelling and conveyance etc., will be met from this income and financial support from the host chapter. The region/host chapter will make the event self-sustainable. CSI HQ will arrange for trophies and certificates. National Round The CSI HQ and host chapter will work out the sponsorship with the leading IT companies. Sponsorship • The Sponsorship scheme is annexed. (Annexure – A.5 / A.6) 15. ADVERTISING AND BRANDING The YITP award is instituted both at National as well as Regional level. To make this award popular and to get maximum entries for participation at each region, promotion by way of advertising and branding will be done by CSI HQ by having a brochure, announcement in CSI communication and on CSI website, mailing to leading IT companies, service industry, academic institutes and members. The event can also reach the mass through social networking sites. Print Material 14 | P a g e CSI HQ will provide the 100 printed broucher to each region for marketing purpose. To maintain the consistency in the event, seven common banners and certificates will be designed at HQ with respective host chapter, venue and event date details as given by all the host chapter. Each host chapter will receive the soft copy from HQ and they can print it at their end. 16. CONFIDENTIALITY CLAUSE The data and information provided in the nomination by the individuals/organisations will be treated with absolute confidentiality. CSI reserves the right to publish any of the data and information submitted by the individuals/organisations, without attribution. 17. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES To make the YITP award a success YITP committees at National and Regional level will jointly put effort. Regional YITP Committee: Each region will have regional YITP committee. The RVP of region will be the YITP Coordinator for that region. He will nominate the Regional Convener preferably from the host chapter. Regional Coordinator and Regional Convener will invite senior members of the host chapter, leading IT professional and academicians in the Regional Committee. National YITP Committee: The National YITP Convener will have all Regional YITP Coordinators in National YITP Committee. The president can nominate ExeCom members, leading IT professionals and Academicians in this committee. 17.1. Role of Regional YITP Committee Following actions are required at regional level: 1. Prepare the Budget and Event Schedule 2. Prepare marketing strategy and publicity plans for promotion the event 3. Identify sponsors for the event 4. Invite nominations for the regional round 5. Finalise Selection Committee in consultation with National YITP Committee 6. Invitation to selection committee members 7. Shortlist nominations (up to maximum 8) for the regional round 8. Select a venue to host the event 9. Select and hire a master of ceremony with regards to linguistic and thematic criteria, 10. Identifying Chief Guest and invite him 11. Contact the short listed nominees 15 | P a g e 12. Organise the event (Identify volunteers, on-site staff, photographer, Presentation Equipments, Food, Awards, Mementos etc. 13. Prepare a brief report of the event with the list of participants, selection committee members, winners, income expenditure statement and photographs; and send to CSI HQ and CSI YITP National Convener. 17.2 Role of National YITP Committee. Following actions are required at national level: 1. Prepare the Budget and Event Schedule 2. Prepare marketing strategy and publicity plans for promotion the event 3.
