There will be a whole school photograph (Nursery to Year 13) on Thursday, 1st May. All girls from Reception to Year
6 will need to wear their summer dresses for the photograph.
Own Clothes Day – Friday, 2nd May
We will be having a non-uniform day on Friday, 2nd May to support the Wales Air Ambulance charity. Girls will be
allowed to wear their own clothes to school for a suggested donation of £1. Miss Crompton’s fiancée Gareth had a
terrible accident on his mountain bike last year, which resulted in him breaking his neck, shoulder, collar bone and
ribs. The Wales Air Ambulance attended the scene and airlifted him to the Heath Hospital where after several
months and several operations he is back to full health. As a thank you to them, in May, Gareth and 12 friends will
be doing a sponsored 500km bike ride from North to South Wales via the WAA bases to raise as much money as they
can for this vital service which doesn’t receive any government funding. For further information, the JustGiving link

Nursery
It has been a very exciting week in Nursery! The baby chicks have now been returned back to the farm
where they are thriving. We have been trying to find the Easter bunny who has eluded us, but finally
today an invitation arrived inviting us to the Easter celebration in the Senior School. Low and behold,
there he was with seven of his friends who hopped back to nursery with us. We found some footprints
which led to the Green Garden and scattered there were lots of Easter eggs. We had fun trying to find
them all! We sang our Easter songs to the Easter bunny and all his friends.
We have a Nursery trip planned for the first week back in school and would be grateful if the consent form could be
returned on Monday, 28th April.
After a very busy term visiting the planets, learning about spiders, building houses for Sion Cwilt and the 3 Little Pigs,
it is time for a restful holiday. Wishing you all a very happy Easter!

Year 5 Visitor
Year 5 girls were plunged back in time to the Second World War when a visitor from the Firing Line Museum brought
her evacuee's suitcase into their classroom. They discovered how women and children managed on the 'Home
Front', using ration books, working in factories and on the land, while the men were away fighting Hitler. After Easter
they will visit the museum to handle artefacts, dress-up in uniform and experience an air-raid for themselves.
Year 1 Football Session
The Year 1 girls had a real treat on Tuesday afternoon. Mr Bellamy came in to coach a football session. The girls took
part in a wonderful warm-up followed by a session on ball skills. The afternoon finished with a game of football. The
game was a draw so they had to move onto penalty kicks to decide the winners! A huge thank you to Mr Bellamy;
the girls had a wonderful time.
Year 3 Waitrose Visit
Year 3 were delighted to welcome Waitrose to school on Monday. Waitrose staff came laden with smoothies, fruit
and worksheets to hand out to the girls. We watched a video about the Fairtrade farming principle, discussed how
we could eat a rainbow and considered how we should select a range of foods from all the food groups in order to
keep healthy. We would like to thank Waitrose for a super event.
Chick Watch!
We said goodbye to the chicks this week. The girls in Year 2 and Year 4 have been excellent carers for the chicks
over the last two weeks watching them grow very quickly and develop proper feathers around their wings. The girls
had to ensure they had enough warmth, food and water at all times and were sad to see the chicks go back to their
home this week; but they understand that they needed space and freedom to roam around on the farm.
Year 1 Visit to RHS Flower Show
Year 1 had a wonderful morning, in the sunshine, at the RHS show in Bute Park. We enjoyed an
African themed story session and all got to make their own beautiful willow wands. The girls
also saw their entry in the schools’ wheelbarrow competition and were able to vote for their
favourite. This year’s theme was 'Fairytales' and our floral display depicted Sleeping Beauty and
the spinning wheel, overlooked by the witch who was inspired by our art work on Guiseppe Archimoboldo's 'Four
Seasons' paintings. The show is on all weekend so please do go along and vote if you can!

Hywelian nominated for GDST Alumna of the Year
We are absolutely delighted that Hywelian, Ann Cotton, has made the shortlist for the GDST
Alumna of the Year 2014. Ann is a remarkable entrepreneur and philanthropist. She is the
Founder and President of the charity Camfed (Campaign for the Education of Girls in Africa),
which is renowned as a model for girls’ education and young women’s empowerment. From her first venture, raising
money by selling cakes to pay fees for 32 girls, the charity, which started in 1993, has developed into a highly
respected international organisation; it has supported some 2 million girls and young women across sub-Saharan
Africa. We hope you will join us and vote for Ann. Click here to place your vote and to find out more about all the
excellent candidates.
Women in Wales Lunch
Last Friday, Howell’s students took part in the Women in Wales Lunch in aid of Save the Children at the SWALEC
stadium. The girls of Years 4 and 5 performed a marvellous medley of horse-themed songs. Girls modelled some of
milliner Alison Tod’s beautiful hats and Dr Morris gave Bing Crosby a run for his money with his wonderful rendition
of ‘Easter Parade’! Many congratulations to everyone who took part; it was a magnificent occasion.
Pitch In Update
Plant and Cake Sale
Enormous congratulations and thanks to our Junior School students, in particular Year 6,
who put on a hugely successful Pitch In Plant and Cake sale. We were delighted to
welcome so many parents, students, staff and governors who joined us for what was a magnificent occasion in the
beautiful sunshine. Our young entrepreneurs could give Alan Sugar a run for his money! Thank you to all the staff
who worked so hard to make the event such a success.

many of you as possible to complete this short walk at the end of the school day, when you collect your daughters.
We would be grateful if your daughters could donate £1 on the day, but of course donations of any amounts will be
welcomed. It will be a fun activity for all the family, so please join us and help us to raise money for this amazing
cause.
Our second Champagne Cycle Challenge will take place on Sunday, 22nd June and we would love to welcome more
families to take part. For full details and a booking form click here.

Howell’s New Disney Choir
Is your daughter a “Budding Belle” or a “Diva Dwarf”? Whether she wants to be the
star of the show, or play the triangle in the back row, the new Disney Choir is the place
for her!
My name is Louise Cohen and I specialised in musical theatre after completing my
music degree. I have produced and musically directed many full stage productions
including, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Singing in
The Rain’ in Swansea’s Grand Theatre and Cardiff’s New Theatre.
During the summer term, myself and Suzanne Wicks are going to run ‘Howell’s Disney
Choir’ Club with the aim of providing a fun and stimulating session where the girls will
have the opportunity to sing solos, sing harmonies, play instruments and move to
popular Disney pieces. This term we will be focusing on music from ‘Aladdin’, ‘Beauty
and the Beast’, and ‘The Little Mermaid’ with the aim of performing a short showcase
for parents at the end of the nine weeks.
This is a wonderful opportunity for the girls as the benefits of performance are proven to hugely increase confidence
and achievement in all aspects of life.
The club is open to girls from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Sessions will take place on Tuesdays from 3.30pm 4.30pm in the music room and will cost £3 a week (£27 for the term).
If you would like your daughter to attend, please email me at [email protected] or call me on 07795
412099.
Cheques for £27 for the term are payable to Louise Cohen and should be given to Mrs Thomas in the Junior School
office. All profit for the term will go to “Pitch-In”.
If you would like a place for your daughter, please get in touch soon as spaces are limited.
Best wishes,
Louise Cohen
