INTRODUCTION
AMU ALIGARH
The Bioprocess Engineering is one of the important
specializations of chemical Engineering. It makes good
exploitation of raw materials into desired and industrially
important products with the help of microorganisms (e.g.
Bacteria, Yeast, Fungi, etc.). The products include
penicillin, streptomycin, enzymes, proteins, acids, alcohols
and many other solvents. Biofuels is emerging as one of
it’s important area of research. Major challenge today
before the chemical engineer is the sustainable
development with the least exploitation of natural
resources, low environmental loading and the most
economical process. The advancement in bioprocesses and
biotechnology, information technology coupled with
computational methods can assist to resolve the problems
up to large extent. The planned workshop is a step in this
direction.
Aligarh is an important commercial and educational centre
of India. It is situated at a distance of 130 km southeast of
Delhi on the Delhi-Howrah rail route and Grand Trunk
Road. It is also connected about 100 km by road from Agra
and 70 km from Mathura. The University Campus is
situated at a distance of about 3 km from Aligarh Railway
Station.
My vision never dimmed, my determination never failed,
I built this Institution for you and I am sure, you will carry
the light of this institution far and wide, darkness will
disappear from all around.
That is the time when my soul will rest in peace, that is
when I feel that I have achieved what I aspired for.

The idea of establishing a University for Muslims was
conceived by the great visionary and social reformer
Sir Syed Ahmad Khan as early as in 1867. The University
made its humble beginning with the establishment of the
Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College in the year 1875.
Later on, the college was upgraded to a full-fledged
Central University in the year 1920 by an act of the then
Central Legislature.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The academicians, R&D personnel and people working in
any area related to bioprocess will be most benefitted from
the workshop. However, the workshop is open to all
persons working in chemical and biochemical industries.
Students from Chemical/Petrochemical/Biochemical/Post
Harvest Engg. & Tech./Biochemistry/Biotechnology
background are also welcome.
The idea of creation of the Deptt. of Chemical Engg. at
AMU was born with the visit of HIS Highness Sheikh
Zayed Bin Sultan Al- Nayhan of the UAE on 1975. The
approval of the UGC was obtained for the creation of the
Department in the fifth Five Year Plan and it came into
existence in 1978, when the first five year undergraduate
course in Chemical Engineering started with an intake of
30 students. The Deptt. is also running M.Tech. (Chemical
Engineering) and Ph.D. courses. The alumni of the
department are serving premier institutions (academic and
R&D) and Industries in India and abroad as well. The
department has a proposal to start M.Tech. (Bioprocess
Engineering) in coming years. The department is well
equipped with modern facilities and computational
softwares (ASPEN PLUS, MATLAB, CHEMCAD etc.).
1940-41 and Civil Engineering in 1941-42. To recognize
the remarkable contributions, made by Dr. Zakir Husain
the College was named as Zakir Husain College of
Engineering & Technology.
