Columbus matters because after him came millions of other Europeans who brought their art, music, science, medicine, philosophy and religious principles to America. Columbus matters because Greek democracy, Roman law, Judeo-Christian ethics and the tenet that all men are created equal are all European contributions that have made the United States what it is today. Columbus matters because his holiday recognizes not only the achievements of a great Renaissance explorer, but the success of the millions of immigrants from all over the world, including Europe, who followed him, seeking religious freedom, political stability and the chance to give their children a better tomorrow. Columbus Day is the only holiday on which the nation officially recognizes the presence, if not the contributions of, an estimated 16 to 26 million Italian Americans. For that reason, organizations like the Sons of Italy lobbied for years to make it a federal holiday. They succeeded in 1971 when Congress passed a law declaring the second Monday in October Columbus Day in all 50 states. This information was prepared by the Order Sons of Italy in America Commission for Social Justice. The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), is the oldest and largest national organization in the U.S. for men and women of Italian heritage. Local Support: When you get the chance, thank Rich SaBell and the rest of the Columbus Day Parade Committee members for once again doing a great job organizing this parade on a shoe-string budget and for keeping the parade alive. 3 La Parola - October 2012 presents Polenta Fest Dinner/Dance Saturday, October 20th, 2012 6:00pm - 11:00pm Sons of Italy Denver Lodge Hall 5925 West 32nd Avenue (32nd and Harlan) Tickets: $10 for children 5-11 and $30 for Adults 12 and over Reserve your tickets by October 17th by contacting Anne Ciancio at 303-235-9308 Enjoy great foor and drink and dance the night away to the sounds of The Rhinelanders Visit with old friends and make new ones! What is Polenta? Polenta is coarsely or finely ground yellow or white maize (cornmeal) used as a foodstuff. It is cooked by boiling to a paste in water or a liquid such as soup stock, and may be eaten with other ingredients. After boiling, it may be baked, fried or grilled; leftover polenta is often used this way. As is common with many foods, the term may refer to the ingredient or a cooked dish made with it (as with rice, beans, etc.). Polenta is originally an Italian word, derived from the Latin for hulled and crushed grain, especially barley-meal; maize was not cultivated in Europe until the early 16th century. 4 2012 Calendar of Upcoming Lodge Events OCTOBER 6th Columbus Day Parade 17th General Meeting 20th Polenta Fest Dinner/Dance NOVEMBER 3rd - 4th Craft Fair 14th General Meeting - Salute to Veterans, Thanksgiving Dinner DECEMBER 8th Adult Christmas Party 12th General Meeting 16th Children’s Christmas Party Dates and times are subject to change.
