Members Serve Up Breakfast at
Mount Carmel’s Prima Domenica Mass
The cooks and servers were made up of members (from left to right) Duke Finmore, Bob Giusto, Tony Iozzo, Pam Wright, Helen Marzano-Frei, Nikki
Rossi, Maggie Iozzo, Deb and Nick Capobianco.
Members came out of full force to help prepare breakfast for those who attended Mount Carmel’s Prima
Domenica mass. The mass, held in Italian, takes place there on the first Sunday of each month. Different
area organizations take turns preparing the breakfast. On the menu for September’s breakfast was a
breakfast calzone (eggs, ham, cheese, peppers and mushrooms wrapped in a light dough), fresh seasonal
fruit, pastries, coffee, orange juice and Bellini’s (champagne and peach juice). Thank you to members
who volunteered!

1.
The reception held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel was a great
success. Our members prepared breakfast calzones, fresh fruit,
desserts and Bellini’s added that special touch. Thanks to all who
prepared the breakfast and helped to serve. The donations that
were collected went to the church.
a) All terms of office will be limited to two
consecutive terms unless the person(s) run for
a different office or there are no nominations for that office.
Thanks to the Marzano family and our kitchen staff for preparing a
delicious spaghetti dinner. Many of our members worked to make
pizzelles and homemade baked items as well, we had a great turn
out of members to help with the serving and the clean up and a
huge thank you goes to them as well.
The work on the house is moving along thanks to the dedication
and hard work of our members. Brothers Joe Ciancio, Bob
Sandeman and Rocky Germano removed the carpet and pad from
downstairs. After some needed repair work to the basement walls,
brothers Joe and Bob finished up the basement with a fresh coat of
paint. Thank you for your time and talents. There is still work to be
done and we are moving along with needed repairs.
This is a very busy time of year for our lodge so please mark
your calendars so that you will not miss out on the fun. We will
be holding a Polenta Dinner Dance on the 20th of October, Craft
Fair on the first weekend in November, our annual salute to our
veterans will be held at our November meeting along with our
delicious Thanksgiving dinner and this year we are planning
another Bunco tournament. December will bring our Christmas
Dinner Dance, Children’s Christmas Party, and once again our
general meeting will be a social with our Christmas Eve Dinner.
Please read inside this issue for more details on each event.
Brother Gary Capritta gave the golf report at the September general
meeting. Brothers Gary Capritta and George Vendegnia did an
outstanding job of raising a very nice profit for the Denver Lodge
by securing 56 hole sponsors and 84 golfers. Thank you to all that
worked the tournament and donated prizes.
Happy Columbus Day!

Why Columbus Day Matters
By Dona DeSanctis, Ph.D. deputy executive director of the Order Sons of Italy in America
The current fascination with multiculturalism makes Columbus and his holiday more necessary than ever before in
our history.
Columbus matters because after him came millions of other Europeans who brought their art, music, science, medicine,
philosophy and religious principles to America.
Columbus matters because Greek democracy, Roman law, Judeo-Christian ethics and the tenet that all men are created equal
are all European contributions that have made the United States what it is today.
Columbus matters because his holiday recognizes not only the achievements of a great Renaissance explorer, but the success
of the millions of immigrants from all over the world, including Europe, who followed him, seeking religious freedom,
political stability and the chance to give their children a better tomorrow.
Columbus Day is the only holiday on which the nation officially recognizes the presence, if not the contributions of, an
estimated 16 to 26 million Italian Americans. For that reason, organizations like the Sons of Italy lobbied for years to make it
a federal holiday. They succeeded in 1971 when Congress passed a law declaring the second Monday in October Columbus
Day in all 50 states.
This information was prepared by the Order Sons of Italy in America Commission for Social Justice. The Order Sons of Italy in America
(OSIA), is the oldest and largest national organization in the U.S. for men and women of Italian heritage.
Local Support:
When you get the chance, thank Rich SaBell and the rest of the Columbus Day Parade Committee members for once again
doing a great job organizing this parade on a shoe-string budget and for keeping the parade alive.

What is Polenta?
Polenta is coarsely or finely ground yellow or
white maize (cornmeal) used as a foodstuff. It is
cooked by boiling to a paste in water or a liquid
such as soup stock, and may be eaten with other
ingredients. After boiling, it may be baked, fried
or grilled; leftover polenta is often used this way.
As is common with many foods, the term may
refer to the ingredient or a cooked dish made with
it (as with rice, beans, etc.).
Polenta is originally an Italian word, derived from
the Latin for hulled and crushed grain, especially
barley-meal; maize was not cultivated in Europe
until the early 16th century.
