Weather permitting – Final decision on event suitability
will be made Wednesday October 8th.
This lure coursing event will be on the large event lawn at the back of
WAG. It is a modified lure course – not straight racing. There will be a
variety of turns on the course. As this event is subject to weather
conditions - it will not be held if we have rain – or the day before had
significant rain - for safety reasons.
ALL dogs must be completely under handler control and we ask that people do not
bring dogs that will not recall or have issues with other dogs. This is a highly charged
environment for the dogs as they love it so much. We also use a catch basin to help
bring the dogs in and quickly control them to allow another dog to run. A well fitting
harness is recommened to better hold your dog.
Please be sure to send in the day and session time you are requesting on the website
form and be sure to include an alternate time in case the one you
are requesting is already filled.
New to Luring… What is Lure Coursing?
“Lure Coursing is a performance event developed in the early 70's by Lyle
Gillette and sight hound fanciers who hunted
jackrabbits in the open field, which risked the harm
caused by barbed wire fencing. They invented lure
coursing as a safer, more controlled sport for sight
hounds that would recreate the physical requirements
of open field coursing, allowing them to continue testing the functional abilities
of their sight hounds. The hounds chase plastic bags on a course laid out to
simulate escaping game.” But many dogs love the thrill of the chase – not just
sight hounds. And that’s why we offer open lure coursing. It doesn’t matter
what breed your dog is - if they love to chase things, they will LOVE Lure
Coursing! And even if you think they won’t – many people are very surprised
when their dogs go nuts for the luring. At our events we've had many different
breeds run the lure - Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds, Rottweiler’s, Boxers, Rat
Terriers, Boster Terriers German Shepherds, Labs, Border Collies, Aussies,
Shelties and lots of All Americans too! We've had a few Sight hounds stop by
as well and boy do they enjoy themselves.
Our course is run on 2 acre lawn on our property. We always 'walk the line'
before we start coursing to make sure there aren't any hazards. The only
dog(s) allowed in the field are the ones running the course. All other dogs are
kept behind a fence barrier. A dog can run alone or with a friend - it is up to the
owners.
Our course is approximately 200 yards long - shorter than a regulation course
for sight hounds but long enough for dogs to have fun!
