MEET YOUR DIRECTORS
MAX DELACY, CEO
When Max DeLacy experienced his first Spartan Race in the
US, he knew he had to bring it to Australia. He saw Spartan
Race as the perfect way to create extreme physical challenges
for a wide range of people, from elite athletes, to the cross
fitters, to any man, woman or child who’s willing to give it
their all. A runner, trainer and family man who loves to explore
his own limits, Max is totally dedicated to making every single
part of Spartan race as tough, crazy and fun as possible.
PAUL HARWOOD, RACE DIRECTOR
Max and Paul Harwood have been friends for more than a
decade. They share a tremendous obsession for pushing
themselves and achieving the impossible – if you say it can’t
be done, they’ll be even more determined to try and make it
happen. It was inevitable that they’d end up working together
and they’re both perfect for the Spartan Race experience.
Paul has served as RD for all of Spartan Race Australia’s
events. With an amazing ability to think creatively and solve
problems, he’s a genius when it comes to building the
toughest, most exhilarating obstacle courses in Australia. Paul
is a weapon on a mountain bike, a gravity-defying climber
and has more than enough grit to put in the hours on the race
build and cheer on his own tribe of mini Spartans on the day.

SPARTAN RACE GUIDE 01
What is a Hurricane Heat?
The Hurricane Heat was born in August 2011. On the advice
of local emergency services a US Spartan Race was cancelled
due to severe weather, which was later named Hurricane Irene.
There was a loud minority of racers who didn’t see this as valid
and wouldn’t let it go.
Joe Desena, Spartan Race founder eventually posted,
‘if you want to do the course in a hurricane, then be there at
6am.’ 100 or so people showed up, and JD took them over
the course as a team, adding a number of obstacles and
challenges along the way.
If this is your first Spartan Race it is important you understand
how a Hurricane Heat differs from our usual event. It is a much
more personal experience, with a small group of racers being
put through the course by a team of trainers. You will be tested
by additional challenges and obstacles along the way, and the
team must work together to get to the end. What you loose in
big festival experience you gain in intensity and camaraderie.
Due to demand we opened a Saturday Sprint at Sydney, and
the Sunday Sprint will now be run as a Hurricane Heat. If you
would rather switch to the Saturday and run a regular Sprint
Race please email us here.
The weather became the least of their problems.
Since then Hurricane Heats have been run at selected races,
often with JD or other surprise guests in attendance to dish
it out.
MANDATORY H.H. GEAR
HYDRATION
The Hurricane Heat is about resilience and self sufficiency. It is
mandatory for Hurricane Heat racers to carry a hydration pack
and water bladder. Please ensure you fill hydration packs at
home as there will not be filling stations at the start.
We recommend UltrAspire as a good hydration brand for the
Hurricane Heat. You can view the range at barefootinc.com.au
HURRICANE FOOTWEAR
Spartan Race includes sections of technical trail running,
natural and man-made obstacles and multiple mud and water
crossings. For your safety and to enjoy tackling the course
you must invest in suitable footwear.
Key elements include grip, drainage and durability. You will
be climbing ropes and cargo nets, so a shoe with rope-guard
features would be advisable.
HURRICANE NUTRITION
It is recommended you bring with you gels and protein bars
and other food to sustain you, the average time to complete
the Hurricane Heat is 3 hours so be prepared.
All rubbish must be kept on you in a pocket or in your pack
not left on course.
