She enjoys taking classes and teaching the quilters of tomorrow, believing that to grow, we need to keep learning. Antoinette 1 TWO FOR ONE No Kit 1 day R250 (All levels) Make twice the quilt in half the time with this reversible quilt-as-you-go table runner. The technique shows you how to break up a big quilt into smaller, manageable blocks. You will learn to adapt your free motion skills to the squares and also learn reverse binding. Students’ Requirements List: Fabric - Front: for the front, choose a bold design with good quilting lines. Cut 3 x 22 cm square blocks. Also cut 30 cm square fabric material for the background, half square triangles. Cut 3 x 22 cm cotton batting squares (cotton is the only batting that can be ironed) and another 31 cm sqaure cotton batting. - Front Sashing: choose a colour that will go with the fabric. Cut 2 x 4.5 cm strips. - Back: use a tone on tone fabric. Cut 3 x 22 cm squares and 1 x 30 cm square from the same fabric - Back Sashing: use the same colour as the blocks. Cut in 2 x 3 cm strips. - Front Binding: choose a colour that will go with your front sashing or a contrasting colour. Cut 2 x 3.5 cm strips. - Back Binding: use the same colour as your blocks and sashing. Cut 2 x 3 cm strips. You can choose plaids/checks, batiks, floral, stripes or bold prints. Everything looks stunning. She is now trying to reduce the pile of UFOs in her cupboard. Carool 1 BOX WITHIN A BOX No kit 1 day R250 (All levels) Have fun making this 3-D illusion quilt “Box within a Box” the easy way! Students’ Requirements List: For a quilt approximately 95 x 80 cm (37 x 31 inches) you will need: Fabric: - 6 sets of 3 fat quarters per set – 1 light, 1 medium and 1 dark. OR - 6 sets of 3 widths of fabric, 10 cm (4″) – 1 light, 1 medium and 1 dark. The greater the value contrast the better. Each set of fabric should be of a similar colour. The 6 sets may all be different colours or move from one colour through to the next as in a colour-wash. Fabric for the borders, backing and binding is not necessary for the workshop. I like to use hand-dyes 3 (Amafu marbleised hand-dyes, e.g., the Colour Rolls) and not patterned commercial fabrics - 20 cm square piece of medium purple for the geranium flower - Scrap of white fabric for the centre of the flower - Scrap of avocado fabric for the centre of the flower Medium weight Vilene, about 35 cm square (glue on one side only) Appliqué paper (magic appliqué), about 20 cm square Sewing machine, foot, extension cord and adaptor plug. Bring along a darning foot as you may get far enough to use it. CarolM 1 A FABRIC BOOK ½ day R145 (includes kit) (All levels) An A3 sized piece of calico will be folded, cut, stitched by hand and edged with a naïve running stitch around each page to create a 4-page (8 sided) booklet that you can decorate at your leisure at home to your own style. It looks great decorated as a memento for a special friend – use meaningful sayings, images your friend will love or appliqué directly onto a page. This could be popped into an envelope and given as a card. I’ve used mine as a memory book for myself, filled with some of my favourite miniature blocks and small appliquéd pieces. Finished size 13 x 9.5 cm. She is a qualified home economics and needlework teacher, is crazy about scrap quilts and uses colour in a very unique way. Doortjie 1 CROCHET WORK No kit 1 day R250 (Students must have a basic knowledge of crochet and understand crochet terminology – Intermediate) Students can use double knit or 4-ply wool to crochet. For double knit, you will need a 3.5 mm hook and for 4-ply, a 3 mm hook. We will make a variety of different blocks in this class. Special attention will be given to joining new colours and ending off threads in 4 your blocks. Joining completed blocks will also be addressed. Bring a variety of different colours and your hook to this workshop. Doortjie 2 BROKEN 9-PATCH No kit 1 day R250 (All levels) This quilt has a theme of dots, stripes and big print fabrics. The block size is 12 cm square or 5″ square. The completed quilt is 152 cm square (60″ square) without borders. Students’ Requirements List: Before the workshop, you need to prepare the following: 75 blocks of one type of print, for example dotted fabrics 75 blocks of another type of print, for example stripy prints 75 blocks of a large print Don’t cut more than 3 blocks from any one fabric. Only cut 1, 2 or 3 blocks from each fabric. You can also make a completely scrappy quilt using any fabrics as long as they all are of the same texture, but again, don’t cut too many blocks from the same fabric. Please cut accurately! She is known for her immense knowledge and dedication to quilting in South Africa. Hazelmay 1 MINIATURE MESSAGES AND MEMORIES ½ day R215 (includes kit) (All levels) The “M and M” quilt idea was born from a need to give my son a quilt that he could carry with him when he started on his travels around the world in 1997 – I think all children need a quilt from home, wherever they are! I included pictures of things that I wanted him to remember from the past and things that he needed to remember for the future. The many other memory quilts which I have since made were developed from this one, which focuses on the use of novelty and picture prints. Students will stitch a miniature memory quilt to take home. The history and origin of picture and memory quilts will be discussed. Current trends and ways of using picture prints will be covered. A wide variety of ideas will be given for students to develop and use after the class. It contains a pack of fabric which includes picture prints, batting, backing and binding, and a printed instruction booklet. 5 Hazelmay 2 FABRIC TOYS ½ day R170 (includes kit) (All levels) Handwork This will be a half day class, during which students will complete one of the puzzle blocks and receive three more patterns to make at home. Two of the blocks are made by hand, the other requires hand and machine stitching. Students’ Requirements List: A4 size cardboard (the side of a cereal box is perfect) A glue stick Paper scissors Rotary cutter and small cutting board or a 2B pencil and fabric scissors Small quilters’ ruler if you have one. Heather Beckett Heather is a graphic designer who started quilting about 10 years ago. She is always looking for the newest, most innovative methods and design in quilting. Designing, stitching and free motion quilting is what she enjoys most. Heather 1 SASH THOSE SCRAPS No kit ½ day R125 (All levels) This fun-to-make scrap quilt makes successful use of narrow sashes. You will learn the technique in this half day workshop and can later make the quilt as large as you like. Students’ Requirements List: Multicoloured scraps: large prints, small prints, floral, geometric, light, dark, medium, and in every colour. Sized from 3” x 3” to 4” x 5”, ironed. The sashing needs to stand out so should be white, off white or very dark/black. The use of S curves (the new background fill, easier than meandering) will be demonstrated. 6 Heather 2 DRAFTING YOUR OWN FEATHERS 1 day R275 (includes kit) (Intermediate) Draft your own feathers, even if you cannot draw! This is a new, innovative course in which the student is taught how to construct feathers to fit spaces and borders for quilting free motion. Includes practical quilting. This course also includes my ‘S’-curve overall background fill demonstration with S-curve stencils available to buy. Relax and enjoy making a whole cloth sampler with free motion quilting in this two-day class. Students’ Requirements List: Machine: Cleaned, oiled and in good working order. Check in your machine’s manual how to tighten and loose the top and bobbin tension. The feed dogs must be able to drop. Hettie 2 TUNISIAN CROCHET No kit 1 day R250 (Intermediate) If you like the ease of working with a crochet hook but admire the look and feel of knitted fabric, you’ll love learning Tunisian crochet. Beware, you may get hooked! NB: you must know how to chain and have fundamental crochet skills. Since then, her love of handwork, fabric, colour and creating quilts has grown and grown! Forty-something years later, she is still stitching and involved in quilting. Jenny 1 JUST MY CUP OF TEA No kit 1 day R250 (All levels) In this one-day class you will learn fun tea-dying methods of preparing background fabrics for this tea-themed workshop. Start creating “just your own cup of tea” project with techniques such as paper-based machine piecing, fused appliqué with machine or hand stitching and needle-turn appliqué. Patterns will be supplied and ideas for making a small quilt, tray cloth, table runner, tea cosy, mug bag, journal page or cushion should get you inspired to use any or all of the techniques to complete “your own cup of tea” project at home. Suitable for coffeeholics and tea-totallers! Students’ Requirements List: 100% cotton fabric for background suitable for tea-dye. In this calm, Zen class you will create a special little box using this technique. Many possibilities for using Japanese Folded Patchwork units will be shared. This involves some handwork (final ‘fiddle’ hand stitching) and some machine sewing (gathering). Stiff fingers may find the hand sewing a bit challenging. Students’ Requirements List: Hand-sewing essentials: Sharps needles, long sharp thin pins, thimble, reading glasses if you use them and scissors (paper and fabric) Template material: Cardboard or cereal box and Pritt glue stick. Layer a serviette onto your background and embellish with machine embroidery. You will always learn sound techniques in Marline’s classes. Marline 1 EASY PEASY PINEAPPLE BLOCKS No kit 1 day R250 (All levels) Another fun and easy class to make up Pineapple Blocks with no sweat or waste of fabric. In this class you will learn a technique that does not require foundation piecing. Just two contrasting fabrics are used in the class, but you can introduce other fabrics to make more blocks for a quilt at home. Students’ Requirements List: 2 x ½ m fabric with a good contrast. I used ½ m red and ½ m blue Rotary cutter and mat, ruler, pencil Machine with a 1/4″ foot Matching thread Marline 2 HAND QUILTING No kit 1 day R250 (All levels) In this class, students will draw their design (which I will provide) onto their fabric. The fabric will then be sandwiched and tacked and I will teach the “teaspoon” method of hand quilting. We will also discuss how to design and make a full bed size whole-cloth quilt. Students’ Requirements List: 60 cm square cream cotton fabric 70 cm square thin batting, e.g., Loomtex 70cm square backing Tacking thread 1 reel cream hand quilting thread 12″ quilting hoop Between quilting needles #11 or 12 (I will also bring some) Thimble Teaspoon (not your best silver, stainless steel will do) or a quilting spoon if you have one Pencil with B lead. 11 Marline 3 FUNKY FABRIC WEAVING No kit 1 day R250 (All levels) This is a fun class, weaving fabric to use as the background for a project or to make a small quilt. We will use two contrasting fabric and appliqué paper for each piece. I will show you how to make different designs using different ways of weaving the fabric. Students’ Requirements List: A4 size fabric with a very good contrast. Each woven piece uses 2 pieces of fabrics so 6 pieces for the day’s class will be sufficient. 6 X A4 pieces of appliqué paper. 3 X A4 pieces of Loomtex batting 3 X A4 pieces of backing fabric I will bring a machine for those who get as far as the quilting. Morag Scordilis enjoys exploring creative techniques and combining art materials with fabric and stitching. Morag 1 INTRODUCTION TO FREE-MOTION THREADWORK 1 day R315 (includes kit) (Intermediate) Make an A3 quilt using free-motion machine work, fusible appliqué, coloured pencils and art materials. Breaking free from the traditional mould, you will learn how to incorporate thread-sketching and thread-painting into your work. You do not need to be “artistic” to enjoy the workshop and will add some interesting, creative skills to your quilters’ toolbox. Students’ Requirements List: Sewing machine with feed dogs that can be lowered and can do a zigzag stitch. A darning or free-motion foot (open toe is preferable) Small, sharp (embroidery type) scissors Embroidery hoop to fit under your machine needle. She teaches all of the basic techniques of patchwork, strip piecing, machine appliqué, machine quilting and using machine embroidery to embellish quilts and other projects. Colour and nature are probably her most important stimuli – detailed closeups of plants, outlines of trees on the horizon, the colours of a sunset and the shapes of desert dunes or rocks could all spark a burst of creativity. Sheila 1 INNOVATIVE MACHINE PIECING No kit 1 day R250 (Intermediate) In this workshop you will create an image of a sunset landscape with a tree silhouette. The dramatic background will be made up of units comprising off-centre log-cabins, strip-piecing and curved strips. The method of working is free cutting with a rotary cutter, but no measuring. The units will be pinned to the wall and blocks will be built up by combining the units and adding more strips where necessary, until you have a background sufficiently big to add your tree, approx 50 x 50 cm. The tree will be created with free machine embroidery in a hoop, using scraps of fabric and wool. It will then be appliquéd onto your background fabric. Students’ Requirements List: The work will be divided into three sections. The bottom will represent the ground/rocks and will be the darkest, with browns, blacks, dark reds, greens. The middle will be the lightest with yellows, oranges, pinks. The top will be dark blue, purple and charcoal clouds. Mostly hand-dyes are recommended, with some plains and small prints. Small pieces of silk or metallics could be added for interest. Fabric scraps in dark colours for the tree silhouette (cotton, velvet, corduroy and tulle) and bits of wool for texture. Bring and share your scraps! Small pieces of fabric are fine, at most fat quarters. Brown/charcoal/black plain fabric on which to embroider the tree, about 25 cm square. Each hexagon is like a little quilt that is pieced, based, quilted and bound with the backing brought to the front. The size of this bed runner can easily be adapted to fit a single or king size bed. We have been asked to make and donate Luscious Little Layerings (lusciouslittlelayerings.blogspot.com) that the KZN Quilters’ Guild will use in a fundraising drive. If you have signed up for any of the workshops at Fynbos, you can join one of the Free Workshops. These are half day sessions held in the morning (9am to 12pm) and in the afternoon (2pm to 5pm). The quiltlets are A4 and can be any design you wish. Use fabric from the Scrap Stash in the classroom or bring your own lappies. Feel free to bring along any trial blocks or left over bits cluttering up your sewing room to swop and share. There will be a number of designs available should you not want to design your own. There is no right or wrong way of binding, appliquéing or embellishing your work. The choice and fun is all yours. All skill levels are welcome! The school is within walking distance of Paul Roos, as is a good Kwikspar. No bedding is provided and the rooms have two single beds. Breakfast is provided. Cost: R200 per night per person. For those quilters who prefer to self-cater, we have reserved a number of cottages at the Stellenbosch Rugby Academy. The cottages, which sleep six (two per bedroom) are in a security complex on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. There is a bathroom, kitchen and lounge with TV. It is fully equipped and bedding is provided. Each cottage has braai facilities. A car is needed as these cottages are about 4 km from Paul Roos High School. Cost: R150 per night per person. Unfortunately, only Wednesday and Thursday night are available. Lunch You can book your packed lunch on-line for Friday and Saturday. Lunch costs R40.00 per day. Functions There will be one official function, a lunch held on Thursday from 12pm -1:45pm to officially open the festival and exhibition, and to announce the prize winners of our quilt competition. Finger food, such as quiches, sandwiches, salads and soft drinks, will be served. The lunch will be served on the lawn in front of the Japie Krige Hall, Paul Roos Gymnasium.
