urse Sharon Friederick
informed me recently about the upcoming Flu
Clinic that will be held at the
Highland School’s Gymnasium
on October 22nd. The Flu
clinic will be available for students from 4k to 12th grade.
To receive the vaccination,
each student will need a signed
permission slip from their parents. These permission slips as
well as information about the
Flu vaccination will be sent
home with your students at
the beginning of October. The flu clinic is set up by the Iowa County Health
Department.
Many people ask, “Why do I need to get a vaccination?” The reason being is
because of influenza, commonly known as the flu. This is a contagious disease that occurs in the US once every year between October through May.
Influenza can lead to pneumonia making medical conditions much worse.
In children, some symptoms may be diarrhea and/or seizures. Thousands
of people every year die from influenza. The flu vaccine is the best way to
prevent any symptoms, and the spreading from one to another.

Water Quality Investigations at Black Hawk Lake
K
im Wahl (our new Field Biologist) arranged the opportunity for the
Environment Science students to work with DNR Water Quality experts on
September 16th at Black Hawk Lake. Students learned about the various indicators used to determine the quality of water and then had the opportunity to use
equipment to conduct the various water quality tests. Some of the tests included
water clarity, temperature, level of chlorophyll, and amount of dissolved oxygen.
In addition, students learned about invasive species affecting the lakes ecosystem
and the steps being taken to eradicate or control that particular invasive species.
All of these tests were conducted from pontoons under the close supervision of
instructors and DNR officials, as well as the drivers of the pontoons.
We would also like to thank the juvenile bald eagle who decided to shop
for lunch as we were getting ready to
leave. We were all very impressed with
his agility as he swooped down and
scooped up a fish. It was amazing to
be so close and to see the fish dangling
from the eagle’s talons as it flew away.
Prior to the water quality investigations, these same students were
instructed in canoe safety. They then
had the opportunity to practice their
strokes as they took a lazy ride about
the lake. It was the first canoe experience for some of these students. The
most uncertain/scary part is getting in
and out of a canoe without taking a dip.
All students were successful and no
canoe was tipped! Hopefully, they will
have the opportunity to practice their
canoeing skills in the future.
We would like to thank Bill Linscheid and John Tarrell for donating their time
and pontoons making this excursion extra special and safe. Thank you gentlemen!
I think John and Bill learned just as much as we did about the water quality of
Black Hawk Lake, how the quality changes throughout the year, and the species
threatening its native ecosystem. There were even a few questions regarding fishing and the depths you should be fishing at certain times of the year. Ask John if
he will share the secrets!
We would also like to thank Donna Sefton (Public Water Supply Specialist,
Drinking Water and Groundwater) and her daughter Laura Spears for sharing
their expertise with us. Being able to be on the water, hear the information, and
use the equipment made this learning opportunity come to life.
