oday is the 28th
Sunday in Ordinary
Time. The common
theme of today's
Scripture Readings is the
abundant providence of
God and His universal
salvation, exemplified in a
'luscious feast.' God loves all and wants all to be saved
and to attain eternal happiness. In the First Reading
from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, Isaiah speaks of
the abundant providence of the Lord of hosts for all
peoples. Here, we have a very clear graphic description
of the 'great banquet' that the Lord will prepare on the
mountain for all peoples. There will be rich food and
fine wines. There will be neither mourning nor death.
There will be exultation and rejoicing, because the Lord
'has saved us.' Isaiah’s image of salvation is the
fulfillment of our deepest longings, viz. the absence of
hunger, mourning, death and shame. The Gospel
Reading from St. Matthew contains a parable which
likens the Kingdom of Heaven to a 'wedding feast' to
which all are graciously invited. Some have rejected the
invitation; others have accepted. But admission to the
feast is not enough. It is necessary to don the wedding
garment. Participation in the feast requires living lives
worthy of the Kingdom. In the Second Reading from St.
Paul's Letter to the Philippians, the following words of
St. Paul can be linked to the imagery of banquet and
feasting, “In every circumstance and in all things, I have
learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry,
of living in abundance and of being in need.” Indeed, his
deep participation at the Lord’s Table has prepared him
to relish abundance and feasting as well as to endure
hunger and various difficulties in times of scarcity.
Again, in the familiar Responsorial Psalm of today, we
sing, “The Lord prepares a banquet for us in the sight of
our foes.” This song of thanksgiving to the Lord is a
prelude to the Eucharist we celebrate this Sunday

First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-10a
This passage describes the new Jerusalem as a heavenly
banquet on the mountain with the Lord God wiping away
all tears.
.Second Reading: Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20
In simple, direct words, Paul thanks the Philippians for
alleviating his hardships. He stresses, though, that he is as
accustomed to poverty as to abundance and finds all his
strength in Christ
Gospel: Matthew 22:1-14
Once more speaking to the chief priests and the elders,
Jesus relates the parable of the wedding banquet. A King,
preparing a wedding banquet for his son, summons all the
Invited guests. When, after several invitations, no guests
arrive, the King commands his servants to “go out into the
by roads and invite anyone you come upon.” Again, Jesus
warns the elders, “the invited are many, the elect are
few.”

DAY 1: I ‘M HERE!
the moment the nuclei of the
father’s sperm and the mother’s
egg unite, a new and
unrepeatable human being comes into
the world, complete with his or her
own unique set of DNA. The new little
person’s sex is also determined from
the beginning. This tiny human begins her life as a single
cell, gliding down the fallopian tube. In just a few days,
she will snuggle into the soft lining of her mother’s womb,
where she will be nurtured for about 9 months. After
birth she will play a unique role within her own family and
community – a role only she can fulfill. All she needs is
time, nourishment and most of all, love.
