FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Teacher’s Recognised
Congratulations to two of our Heads of Department who have
recently received national recognition. Mrs Catherine Stickland
(Head of Lifestyle Technology) was awarded the Teacher Excellence Award by the Home Economics Institute of Australia.
She was nominated by her staff (some of whom are pictured
below) for a range of exemplary teaching, leadership and personal qualities. Catherine (also a past student of Grace!) and
her team across both campuses are constantly developing
ways to improve the learning and opportunities for students.
Mr Ken Hutchinson (Head of Languages) has recently won the
prestigious Australian Educational Publishers Award
(Secondary Section) for his new textbook for senior Japanese
and early tertiary students, “Shirabeyo”. The winners were announced in a sold-out ceremony on Wednesday 17 September
at the State Library Victoria. The awards were attended by over
140 people from across the publishing industry, with a number
of keynote speakers including Senator The Honourable Scott
Ryan. There were over 125 award entries across various categories in the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary sectors. Mr
Hutchinson’s textbooks are in wide use across Australia and
New Zealand. Ken is also a wonderful tour leader, and recently returned with our students from their trip to Japan and
our sister school, Nichidai.
Brilliant Exo Day
Exo day at Rothwell on the last day of term, attended by students from both campuses, was an absolute hit. Located this
year in the centre of the campus, it featured performances
from the band Iron and Clay, Battle of the Bands, Service
Street, activities of many kinds in the gym, Boys’ Shed, and
Girls Boulevard and more. A big thank you to Esther Harding,
Youth Chaplain, who initiated the whole Exo Day concept and
has established it as an important feature of the Grace calendar. Thank you also to the students whose leadership was outstanding, the staff who assisted and to the visiting youth workers. Caboolture has their own campus Exo day later this week.
“Life is excellent with Jesus!”
GOOGA 25TH Anniversary
If you have been keeping up with Facebook you will have enjoyed seeing the photographs of many past and current staff
from Googa and their families who returned to celebrate our
25th Anniversary at the beginning of the holidays. A weekend
of fellowship, great food, work and fun allowed people to
catch up and thank God for the great blessing that Googa has
been and is to everyone. A new labyrinth was created in
emerging bushland, dormitories were named after native birds
and animals and a ‘Pioneers Pathway’ was created. Thanks
again, Brad and Chris Teakle and the team for your wonderful
hospitality.
Googa has a new dairy!

FROM THE HEAD OF CAMPUS
Once again we have started the sprint that is 4th term...
Our current Year 12s near the close of their secondary schooling and strive to stay focused right up until the very end. For
them there will be an array of culminatory events with the Formals and Grace Celebrates presenting as the first of these
memorable occasions. As always, the challenge will be to find
the balance between study, celebration and nostalgia as the
term progresses.
With the Year 12s' journey approaching its conclusion, this
year's Year 11s now contemplate the contribution they will
make to the Campus and the College in their senior year and
we wish them well with these deliberations. Having just listened
to our College Captain nominees present their speeches to the
senior school assembly today, I am once again encouraged
and humbled by the calibre of young people who have volunteered to serve our community in this capacity. We appreciate
your prayers as we make these decisions in the coming weeks.
In the final week of Term 3, I was delighted to attend this year's
middle school production of Joseph's Technicolour
Dreamcoat. It was a wonderful presentation and worked well
in the MPC. Congratulations to everyone involved, on stage
and behind the scenes, well done. I look forward to showcasing more excellent student skills and talent at the Senior Film
Night on October 24.
‘Camp Gallipoli 2015’
A special opportunity to members of the Grace community has
become available. Camp Gallipoli is a nation-wide initiative
occurring next April, at locations around the entire country, to
commemorate the centenary of the Anzac campaign at Gallipoli. It has been fully endorsed and supported by the Federal
Education Minister as well as Education Queensland, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defence, the ANZAC Centenary Committee and its Chair, Air Chief Marshall
Angus Houston, RSL and Legacy. Camp Gallipoli in Brisbane
will be held at the RNA Exhibition grounds beginning around
4:00pm and involves spending the night of 24 April under the
stars watching movies, documentaries and presentations about
Anzac Day, enjoying a concert and being part of a dawn service before the event officially ends at 8:00am. The following
link will tell you a little more about it. https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpUNKslWdsI.
Grace College has preordered 200 tickets to Camp Gallipoli
and these will be offered on a first come, first served basis to
students, staff and possibly families at a cost of $99 per person. Please start thinking about taking this opportunity. Letters
will be available soon with more information regarding Camp
Gallipoli. I believe the chance to feel like we are actually at
Gallipoli and part of a huge commemoration simultaneously
taking part around Australia will be a wonderful learning experience.

Campus Student Reception.
There are items including house keys, jewellery and watches,
uniform items, lunchboxes, drink bottles and non-school clothing.
If your child has lost any items this year, please drop in at Student Reception and check, or alternatively ask them to come in
and see Mrs Fraser.
At the end of each year unclaimed lost property will be donated to charity, and any unclaimed Grace uniform items will be
used for students to borrow in future years.

If your child has had an item confiscated this year, they can
sign for and pick up these items on their last day of school
from student reception.
LIBRARY
Library Afterschool Service
Monday to Thursday 3:05 – 5:15pm
The Library Afterschool Service provides students with an environment where they can study, read and complete assignments
and where tutors are available to assist students during these
times.
Parents are able to personally organise tutoring support by
phoning Mrs Weber in the Library on 5428 9433, who will
ensure that tutors are aware of these students.
Note: Middle school students are required to be signed out by
a parent or older/senior school sibling.
YEAR 10 MATHSX
Brian Schmidt is a Nobel Prize winner (2011) and is currently
an Australian National University professor. The following is an
excerpt from his speech at the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute forum in Canberra on Tuesday 7 February 2014.
trigonometry wrong, “stuff” literally happens. His son is a commercial airline pilot - maths is a matter of life and death for
him, and of course, his passengers. I could go on and on. My
family is much like any other one in Australia.
Most people who have skilled jobs in Australia have mathematics at the core of that skill base. But everyone needs maths.
In the modern world, maths forms a fundamental basis of interaction with the world. Is my superannuation enough? Can I
afford this home loan? Which telephone plan gives me the
best value? Do the numbers the politicians quote on TV add
up? To answers these questions - questions we all need answers for in order to be successful citizens - requires a competence in mathematics”.
“MATHEMATICS is a uniquely powerful toolbox of humanity.
Unlike other things, mathematics is logically self-consistent and
things are either right or wrong.
Once something is proven right, it is not in question. It is this
certainty that makes mathematics such a valuable tool for us.
Everyone in Australia - and I mean everyone - needs to be
mathematically literate, or numerate as we like to say, and our
country needs many people to be more than numerate: we
need people to be highly skilled.
For me, the tools of mathematics go hand in hand with the
astronomy I undertake. Each day I spend more time using
mathematics than any other activity. I took eight classes at
university in mathematics, almost as many classes as I did in
physics, and twice as many as I took in astronomy.
Now, you may be thinking that I am special - but let’s just look
at my family. My father is a biologist, studying the populations
of fish stocks in Alaska and now Canada - he uses sophisticated mathematics every day to understand exactly how to ensure
that fish stocks remain at healthy levels into the future - as
people fish, or dams release water, or glacial run-off slows or
speeds up. Ah, but he is a scientist, you say. True.
My wife is an economist - whom I met at Harvard. Her education in economics has almost as much maths in it as mine.
Solving challenging coupled differential equations, undertaking sophisticated statistical tests - all to ensure that economies
work efficiently at allowing their people to be prosperous - it is
way more than simply bean counting.
But we all have PhDs. My Australian cousin and her husband
who work in the mining industry as engineers - maths is the
fundamental basis of their work, and, for that matter, Australia’s ability to extract minerals and become one of the world’s
most wealthy countries.
My other cousin and his wife are farmers in Western Australia
who do precision farming, where fertilisers and seeds are
linked to a GPS system, and planted out at optimum values all calculated by them using, you guessed it - maths. Farming
runs on tiny margins - a few percent – and this sophistication
allows them to make money when others go bankrupt.
My brother-in-law in Sydney is a drainer - when he gets his

C-LAW.
USC maintains that their Law Degree provides a number of
points of difference including small class sizes, clinical practice
which gives students real experience with real clients right from
the start and experienced teachers who know their students all
of which adds up to a personalised experience students won’t
get anywhere else.
The information sessions are:

Senior Education And Training (Set) Plan:
In Year 10, the State government and QCAA require school or
other learning providers will work with students and parents/
carers to develop a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan.
The purpose of the SET plan is to help students:
Structure Their learning in Years 11 and 12 around abilities,
interests and ambitions.
Think about their education, training and career options after
Year 12 set and achieve learning goals in Years 11 and 12,
and beyond.
Include flexible and coordinated pathway options in their
course of senior study.
Communicate with parents/carers or teachers/careers counsellors about your post-school plans.
Shortly each Year 10 student will receive the document which
will form their SET plan, when completed. The intention of this
document is to structure a conversation between each student
and their parents/guardians about their plans for the future. A
completed copy of each set plan will be kept on file at the College and you will have a copy as well. They are also compulsory documents if students wish to complete some Vocational
qualifications.
Once the SET Plan is completed, students and the key people
involved in developing each plan should sign and date the
plan to show agreement.
It is recommended that review of each individual’s SET Plan
occurs regularly to make sure subjects and learning are appropriate given changing circumstances, and that students can
maintain a pathway to the courses and career you want after
Year 12.
In addition to the SET plan Year 10 students at the Rothwell
campus will receive work experience forms and some information on the Senior phase of education. Please complete the
forms and return them as soon as possible and certainly before
the due date on the forms. More information on SET plans is
available at the QCA A websit e at http://
www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/ or Student Connect at https://
studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au/.
Tips For Applying For Scholarships:
The following are tips to help you maximise your chance of
gaining a scholarship:
Apply for all the scholarships for which you are eligible.
Read the information on the university web page.
Follow the direction exactly and answer all parts of each question.
Include all documents requested.
Ensure that written applications are readable and provide examples to back up attributes and achievements.
Start preparing your application early.
Collect ideas for your application over time – start with dot
points.
Do drafts of your application – get feedback (from parents,
English teachers and/or guidance officer/counsellors).
Ask referees for supporting statements early, not at the last
minute. They are usually very busy people.
When required, include examples of personal attributes and
achievements such as:
Awards gained
Leadership (including coaching)
Volunteering and other community participation
Teamwork (sport, work, etc)
Initiative.
Include your career aspirations and how the university course
will help you achieve them.
Submit your application by the due date.
For more information and links see Extra Snippets on our website. With regards from Lesley Barnard, Sharyn O’Connor,
Suzanne Wright and Monique Atwell.
