Last month I reported that the weather in Denmark was cold, grey and rainy; how things have changed since then, they have enjoyed summer temperatures over 30˚ in the past couple of weeks with no rain to speak of, quite a change. Here In Brisbane it’s been fairly mild so far this winter - a good time for planning events for the coming year. Our annual general meeting is happening in September: this is your chance to have a say in how the club is run by joining the committee. The committee meets once a month and also participates in club events. It’s a great opportunity to find out how a club is run in Australia, so come on, complete the nomination form, get behind the scenes and help keep the club going – 150 years in 2022 is our next milestone, but there are many hot dogs to be made and sold in the meantime! Come and join in the lively discussion Our little group has been discussing Scandinavian books related to the music genre. I have been reading Simon and the Oaks by Marianne Fredriksson who, if you are unfamiliar with her works, is a wonderful Scandinavian author who writes with a true warmth for all her characters. Established amidst the background music of the violin, this novel recounts a tale of family friendship and love. Simon Larsson, is a pensive and thoughtful boy growing up in Sweden during World War II, fortunate to be safe within a remarkably loving and cohesive community. Half Jewish, he is being raised by his Scandinavian aunt and uncle, who adopted him as their own at birth. In a novel rich in mystical overtones, his adoptive parents take on truly archetypal dimensions. Karin's deep love and compassion is matched by Erik's understated strength and stoicism, and together they create a firm family base from which 11 year-old Simon can grow and dream. But Simon, who doesn't know the story of his birth and adoption, seems set apart from his Scandinavian world by his dark hair and olive complexion, and he often retreats into fantasies to alleviate his feelings of disconnection. When he befriends Isak Lentov, a young Jewish boy from Germany, their families become close in spite of the contrast between Isak's father's religious faith and the Larssons' strictly secular Swedish socialism. These two opposing viewpoints help form a unique framework for Simon and Isak as they come of age and work toward finding meaning in their lives, and as Good reading, Amanda McLaughlin 3266 4538 Norwegian Craft Group Next meeting will be on Thursday 29th July 2010 at 10 am at the “Coffee on Mawson” Coffee Shop Shop 2, 85 Mawson St, Stafford Heights Phone 3350 4200. http://www.mawsongraphics.com/coff ee Reminiscence Craft and gift shop next door.
