Café Danmark
23 March 2012
from 6 pm
Come visit the club and catch up with new and old friends. Try our tasty ‘smørrebrød’: the menu varies from time to time, but you’ll usually find ‘rullepølse’ (spicy
rolled pork), smoked salmon, roast beef, pate, roast pork and ‘Esrom’ cheese on the
menu. And hot dogs. The bar is stocked with Tuborg and Carlsberg beer varieties
imported from Denmark just for us as well as your favourite Australian brews. If you
like a glass of wine with your food, we have a good variety of whites, reds and
sparkling on offer.
It’s also an opportunity to buy delicious Danish pastries, rye bread and other specialty
breads and organic biscuits direct from Britt’s Danish Delights. Tea offers smallgoods
and quality meats from Flemming, the Danish butcher at Woolloongabba, as well as
her own goodies including remoulade. It’s a good idea to order in advance and pick
up at the café.

Dannevirke in New Zealand
If you‟re visiting New Zealand‟s North Island, it‟s not a bad idea to make a stop at
Dannevirke (south of Napier).
In 1872 the good ship „Høvding‟ arrived at Napier from Norway with a shipload of
Norwegians, Danes and Swedes seeking a future in New Zealand. The area around
Napier was covered in forest – pines mostly – and the Scandinavians knew very well how
to fell timber.
The first settlement was at Norsewood and when the next shipload arrived, some 20
families (predominantly Danes) decided to continue their journey south for another 3
days through the bush and established Dannevirke.
Dannevirke is of course named after the system of fortifications built as ordered by
Thyra Dannebod (Mrs. Gorm The Old) in around year 800 to keep out the Franks (it is
now part of Germany).
Back in New Zealand, Danes and Norwegians have been busy felling quite a few trees
since the 1870s and establishing various farming enterprises. Today, Dannevirke is a
much larger town than Norsewood with a busy main street featuring at least one great
eatery with a delicious chicken/spinach/fetta pie with Greek salad on the menu.
Dannevirke still has an active Scandinavian community and you can read more about
this at http://www.dannevirke.net A Scandinavian festival is planned for May 2013.
We also visited the Gallery of History, which contained the original shipping lists of the
early vessel arrivals, so if you are looking for lost relatives around Napier, this is a good
point to start looking – if they arrived in the 1870s that is .
The town uses the above Viking logo, which we have kindly borrowed for this article.

In an article in the Courier Mail in February,
the club rated as number 6 on a list of the
Nordic film spotlight
The cinematheque at GoMA continues to
offer some of the most interesting film
programs in Queensland for dedicated film
buffs.
From now until April 18, the cinema is
presenting Midnight Sun, a free film
program focusing on contemporary Nordic
filmmakers.
Some of the highlights include Melancholia
by Lars von Trier, the Millennium trilogy
films and late night screenings of
Scandinavian horror.

Headhunters – a film based on a novel by
Norwegian Jo Nesbø opened in the middle
of February and is currently showing at
several cinemas in Brisbane.
Det var en lørdag aften ….
Saturday 10 March the club hosted an evening for 30 members and guests enjoying pickled
herring followed by a traditional ’platte’ with a selection of 4 of our favourite toppings for
smørrebrød. Then we had a couple of crackers and some cheese topped off with coffee,
biscuits and chocolate, so I don’t think anybody left hungry.
All expressed great delight with the event – not only was the food delicious but this was a
great opportunity for some Danish hygge and to have a good chat with old and new friends in
more quiet and intimate circumstances than Cafe Danmark.
No doubt we will have another ‘det var en lørdag aften’ during the year. Maybe this time
we’ll get around to playing cards!

Events
February was a busy month with the 70th Birthday Bash, first Kafe Svea, Fastelavn,
Folkrag Old & New and Cafe Danmark as well as four private function events. Strong
demand for the hall for birthday parties and weddings.
New equipment and maintenance
Still experiencing unexplained problems with lighting! Once the new lamps arrive,
Soren will organise for an electrician to check all lights when the new lamps are
installed.
Soren is getting quotes for an awning for the court yard and for removal and
replacement of the asbestos roof.
Money
Accounts for the eight months to February are still showing a small surplus. The
grant from the Department of Communities for $2,500 for the Scandinavian Festival
in September 2012 has already been credited to our account.
Membership
3 new members came on board in the last period. Reaching the 200 member mark is
still proving elusive, with about 20 members who haven’t renewed their membership
for 2011-2012 yet in spite of several reminders. At this stage we have to assume
that they do not wish to continue their membership.
Scandinavian Festival September 2012
In view of the funding granted ($2,500 – we applied for $15,000), Soren has revised
the budget for the event. Club’s contribution at this stage is approx $5,500, but we
expect that sales will match this amount. Traffic controllers at cost of $3,000 are
required for road closure.
Events calendar
Committee discussed the events calendar for the year up to 30 June 2012.

Per Neergaard
1. Maj 1927 – 7. marts 2012
MERE END 1300 DANSKE TITLER
lydbøger fyldte nok i danskernes bevidsthed.
inden for få timer” slutter Thomas Smith.
Gyldendal, People Press, Lindhardt &
Generelt forventes digitaliseringen at betyde,

Anemonequiz
tidspunkt i Danmark?
Danmarks areal sættes til 43.000 km2.
A: 11 milliarder
C: 121 milliarder
B: 21 milliarder
D: 221 milliarder
En Kongelig Affære (A Royal Affair)
Filmen får premiere i Danmark 29. marts 2012.
for dronningen.
Cheføkonom i Nordea,
De unge risikerer at blive sprunget over
»I dag skabes
