AAS are administered by the Australian Government agency AusAID with the aim of contributing to the long-term needs of developing countries in line with bilateral and regional agreements. International Sponsored Students Unit (ISSU) Curtin’s ISSU is a part of Curtin International, located in Building 102 on our main Perth Campus. The ISSU manages all scholarship matters for prospective and current Australia Awards Scholarship (AAS) students. The team comprises three dedicated staff with specialised roles to ensure you receive quality support during your time at Curtin, and complete your studies within the time frame stated in your scholarship placement offer. ISSU staff are also known as the AusAID student contact officers (SCO) or AusAID liaison officers (ALO). Some of the services provided by the ISSU include: • assisting students to choose a course and find a potential supervisor • arranging your airport pick-up and temporary accommodation • introducing and welcoming you to Curtin • liaising with Curtin Housing Services to secure your permanent accommodation • helping you to open your bank account • coordinating AAS orientation week • coordinating the AAS Introductory Academic Program (IAP) in conjunction with The Learning Centre • providing assistance for students seeking tutorial support • organising social events, including a farewell event • managing the Curtin AusAID Facebook page to allow AusAID scholars to develop a network that will provide channels for communication and interaction. • providing information and support with regard to childcare, such as finding placements and organising financial assistance • providing information and support for your family—the ISSU recommends you arrive in Australia by yourself and organise for your family to follow at a later date. You will be provided with family-related information as part of the AAS orientation briefing, such as how to look for work for your spouse. • providing dependant schooling support—all school-aged children of AAS scholarship students are eligible to attend the free public school system in Western Australia. The ISSU will assist all AAS students with school enrolments and Confirmation of Enrolments or Confirmation of Placements (CoE or CoP) that may be needed to issue a dependant visa. Curtin also has comprehensive services and facilities designed to create a supportive environment for all students. The sequence of these qualifications varies depending on the entry requirements set by each school. To find out about the progression of postgraduate packaged programs that can lead to a master degree, contact the ISSU: [email protected] Graduate certificate Graduate certificate courses are designed to develop skills in a specialised area that may or may not be directly related to the corresponding undergraduate degree. Some graduate certificates are specifically designed for non-graduates to allow you to progress towards further postgraduate study. All of the programs are career-oriented, and usually take one semester to complete. Graduate diploma The graduate diploma is a specialised, vocationally-oriented award usually completed in two semesters. Entry is usually based on the completion of a bachelor degree or diploma, although this can be in an unrelated field if you have work experience in the field of study. Graduate diplomas introduce you to postgraduate study in an area outside your first qualification. Less academically qualified applicants may still apply. Postgraduate diploma Emphasis in a postgraduate diploma is on developing greater knowledge and skills through advanced studies of methods, theories and strategies to which you have already been exposed at undergraduate level. 8 You will maintain a vocational emphasis through strong links with industry. Completion of either the postgraduate diploma or graduate diploma usually takes two semesters, and you may be offered credit for recognised learning (CRL) should you proceed to a master degree. Graduate entry master Graduate entry master (GEM) courses provide you with a fast-track learning experience if you already hold a bachelor degree in the same field as your master. These programs are available in health information management, nursing practice, physiotherapy, pharmacy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology and accounting. Master degree A master degree comprises coursework, project work and research in varying combinations. It is designed to enhance your professional skills or help you acquire a deeper understanding of a specific area of knowledge. The advantage of completing a master by coursework is the high level of tutorial advice and study guidance you will receive. A school may accept you into a master degree provided you hold appropriate qualifications as decided by the head of school (usually a bachelor degree, honours degree or graduate diploma). Where appropriate, provision may be made for you to undertake a bridging course or other preliminary work as a requirement for entry to a master degree program. Mature-age students who do not have formal entry qualifications may still qualify for admission to a master program (which is acceptable under the AAS program). A master degree is usually completed in three or four semesters, unless credit for prior learning (CRL) is awarded from other relevant studies. Some master degrees also have a work experience component. Coursework In a master by coursework, you enrol in subjects and attend lectures and tutorials. There will often be a major or minor research component, but assessment is progressive throughout the course. Some coursework programs are conducted as mixed coursework and research studies that are pathways to a PhD. RESEARCH Strong, strategic partnerships and the recruitment of exemplary research leaders have been important in the establishment and growth of Curtin’s highly relevant research programs. Curtin focuses on four main areas of research: minerals and energy, information communication technology (ICT) and emerging technologies, health and sustainable development. Minerals and energy Research in the areas of minerals and energy at Curtin University is aimed at maximising existing resources and developing innovative technological solutions to address our future needs. Research groups from across the University undertake both fundamental and applied research in resource exploration, extraction and processing; development of new materials, energy sources and fuel technologies; mineral and energy economics and policy; and the impact of mining on remote communities. ICT and emerging technologies Information communication technology (ICT) and emerging technologies is a broad area concerned with the use of technology to communicate and use information. Researchers from Curtin are involved in the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the world’s largest radio astronomy project. Radio astronomers, electrical engineers and computational scientists are all contributing their expertise to this exciting endeavour. Curtin also continues research initiatives across areas such as spatial science, wireless telecommunications, digital humanities, e-business, e-health, and digital ontologies. Health Curtin is the largest and most comprehensive provider of health sciences research in Western Australia. Health sciences students have excellent opportunities to join programs within the Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute (CHIRI), which takes an innovative approach to addressing the burden of chronic conditions and lifestyle diseases that impact on the social and economic sustainability of communities worldwide. Research conducted at CHIRI focuses on five primary themes: ageing, chronic disease, Indigenous health, mental health, and population health. Sustainable development One of the core concerns of governments and communities worldwide is sustainable development. Curtin offers research opportunities in sustainable development in two broad areas: built environment and natural environment. The first includes social/ cultural sustainability, urban design construction management and sustainable cities, while the second is concerned with climate change, biodiversity, sustainable tourism, food security and sustainable resource processing. HIGHER DEGREES BY RESEARCH A higher degree by research differs from other postgraduate degrees in that at least two-thirds of the study program must involve research. Although you will need to complete some coursework units, the main part of the work will be a thesis written under the guidance of a supervisor. Doctoral degree A doctoral degree usually requires at least three years of study. If you have a master degree or a bachelor degree with first or upper second-class honours, you may be considered for admission. In exceptional cases, a bachelor pass degree may be enough for admission if you can demonstrate superior academic achievement, significant work experience, and the capacity to undertake significant research. SUPERVISORS You should identify a potential supervisor before arriving in Australia to discuss your research. It should state your research topic and outline your research plan and the objectives you wish to meet. You must also be able to show you have sufficient experience and knowledge in the selected area. The proposal should be accompanied by at least 10 cited references. When you apply to AAS, you must submit your research proposal to the Indonesian AAS program manager along with your AusAID application, and attach evidence of email communication with a potential supervisor. For guidelines on to write a research proposal, visit curtin.edu.au/research/ futurestudents/hdrguidelines/admission.cfm#proposal Research degrees (master and doctor of philosophy) At least two-thirds of the work towards a master by research degree must be pure research. The award indicates that you have contributed significantly to your field and are capable of carrying out independent research. AAS applications need attached evidence of email dialogue with a potential supervisor for master by research or PhD degrees and must include a written two-page research proposal outlining the parameters and purpose of the research you wish to undertake. International Institute of Agri-Food Security Established in 2011, the International Institute of Agri-Food Security (IIAFS) aims to develop innovative research and training across the international food landscape. The institute operates across all faculties—Curtin Business School, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Science and Engineering.
