Respond to the Wedding Invitation of Jesus
In our Gospel passage today (Mt. 22:1-14) Jesus uses a parable to once again speak into our
hearts. In the biblical language, the heart is not simply the organ at the center of our chest but
that place deep within where we make our most fundamental choices about life. He tells us
that the "Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son."
"He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to
come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those invited: "Behold, I have
prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come
to the feast."
The Lord invites us all to accept his kingdom as long as we live. And if we are slow to
respond, he repeats his offer again and a again. But in the end, if we don’t want to have the
Kingdom of God, we don’t have to have it. And, at death, our choice is fixed. And if it is
“No,” our ruin is sure, for outside the kingdom, now rejected, there is nothing but ruins. You
and I will either accept the invitation to live in the Kingdom of God and by its values, or we
will reject it and make “other arrangements.” And those other arrangements are ruinous.
Son of God, by becoming incarnate and giving his life, has united to himself in a certain way
all mankind saved by him, thus preparing for "the wedding-feast of the Lamb". (CCC# 1612,
citing Rev. 19:7, 9)
Every time we participate in the Eucharistic Liturgy, we touch the great mystery. We
participate in the wedding feast of eternity, beginning right now. Heaven comes to earth and
earth touches heaven.
We have all been invited to the Wedding Feast of the Lamb. (Rev. 19) How are we living our
lives in response? Has this fundamental truth about the very meaning and purpose of life and
the root of our vocation truly informed the way we live every day? Are we preparing
ourselves for the eternal wedding day? It is in this context that the final lines of this parable
should be so sobering and motivating,
Brothers, sisters, and friends the Father is pleading for us to enter the feast. Let us decide
today to respond to the Wedding Invitation and begin to live the Nuptial Mystery - right now.
We can do so, by living our lives in, with, and for the Lord Jesus Christ.

It takes great inner freedom to be a follower of Jesus. His
life is an option, a choice, a call, a vocation, and we are
totally free to say yes, no or maybe. You do not have to
do this to make God love you. That is already taken care
of.

5th Annual White Mass - Cardinal Donald Wuerl will be the principal celebrant
and homilist at the 5th Annual White Mass on Sunday, October 26 at 11:30am at the
Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. This liturgy honors the gifts of persons with
special needs and has the color designation of white to signify that in baptism, all
Catholics become equal members of the Body of Christ. Guests are encouraged to
wear white as a sign of their baptism. The liturgy will be ASL-interpreted and the
