No 14, 2014 9th October Important dates for your diary Introduction At the end of last term we farewelled our twelfth Year 12 cohort from the College. The Year 12 Farewell Chapel was held on Thursday 18th September and the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner was held on the following evening at the Liverpool Catholic Club. On that occasion I had the privilege of speaking to Year 12 for the last time. I repeat below the last part of my address to Year 12 – “Year 12 let me send you out from us with a challenge that Jesus gave us all in Matthew’s Gospel (22:37-40) Love the Lord your God. Some of you already do and that is wonderful. For others you are still working that through. Never stop working it through and Love your neighbour as yourself We live in a pretty dark world. Be sources of light. Do it for God (if you will), for your families, for yourselves and selfishly (can I say) do it for me. Mr J Rodgers Junior School Sports Coordinator Compassion Futsal Tournament The ‘Compassion Futsal Tournament’ at PAC, organised by the Year 8 Compassion Committee, took place on Tuesday 2nd September from 4.00 – 7.45pm. The College Prefects also assisted in the running of the tournament. Ten teams from Years 7 and 8 (and including two Prefect teams) descended on the College gymnasium and two outdoor courts to compete and also raise money for the Year 8 Compassion Child from Columbia, Ivan Hoyos. The Years 7 and 8 teams (with their captains in brackets) were: Year 8: Merz’s Minions (captained by Rachel Davison), Soli’s Bandits (Bill Callinan and Monique Schoebel), Native People (Kieran Burns-Dunn), Fat Doggiez (Callum McMurtrie ) and Hippopotomontosesquipedaliophobia (Hayden Goodshaw). Year 7: The Aussies (Matthew Galea), Bald Eagles (Nelson Dukes) and The Italians (Alexander Ruggeri). The games were competitive and any drawn games were decided by ‘sudden death’ penalty shootouts. Legends were born such as when Ms Soliman took to the court to support her charges (Soli’s Bandits) and Charlotte Britton’s goal (during a penalty shootout) that advanced her team into the major semi-final. Impressive qualities on display included the striking ability of Callum Payer, professionalism of goalkeeper Zalia Lackey, talent of Callum McMurtrie and Matthew Galea’s fearlessness. A pizza dinner energised everyone as the games progressed to the ‘business end’ of the tournament held in the gymnasium. Nathan Decelis (Year 8) the main referee in the finals series, assisted by Bill Callinan, kept the game flowing while supporters chanted team songs to the background music of ‘Eye of the Tiger’. Finally, two teams emerged above the rest: Soli’s Bandits and Fat Doggiez. After the national anthem, the Championship Final began. Both teams played with intensity and excellent teamwork with the deciding goal scored in the dying minutes. The final score: 2 – 1 to the Fat Doggiez. We ended the evening with an ‘All Stars Game’ between the Prefect All Stars and Junior All Stars. The Prefects talked about the importance of sportsmanship then displayed their skill with a win against the Junior All Stars in an exciting penalty shoot-out. Thank you to all the teams, parents and supporting staff: Mrs Duxbury, Mrs Payer and especially Mrs Jones who organised the Prefect body. A special mention must go to the Prefects who led by example with their stellar attitude and spirit of service. Congratulations to the Year 8 Compassion Committee for a successful tournament: Rachel Davison, Georgia Dardaneliotis, Erin Johnson, Jack Corcoran, Thomas Chitos, Raquel Horan, Isabella O’Gorman, Callum Payer, Charlotte Britton, Zalia Lackey, Bill Callinan, Ashley Holmes, Monique Schoebel, Grace Mekhail, Abbey McPherson, Charlotte Arkle and Emi Foster. Emma Hoath I graduated from PAC in 2003, where I was part of the first graduating class. Throughout my years at PAC, I was extremely dedicated to horses, owning a couple and competing most weekends. Shortly after leaving school, I was given the opportunity to work with Olympic Eventing Gold Medallist Stuart Tinney. My job included horse management and riding my own and some of Stuart's competition horses. During my two year employment with Stuart, I was selected on the National Young Rider Eventing Squad, culminating with me representing Australia in the 2006 Trans Tasman Championships, travelling to New Zealand and convincingly beating the Kiwi's! After leaving Stuart's in 2006, I began working at a local equine vet clinic, where I was able to learn more about horses and study to become a fully qualified Equine Vet Nurse through TAFE. Once my course was finished, I moved to England where I worked for (at the time) reigning Eventing World Champion Zara Phillips. Living and working in England was an amazing experience and from there I moved to Germany, where I was employed by a British Army Captain who competed five horses throughout Europe. My job took me to countries such as Poland, Austria, Slovakia and France. I returned to Australia in early 2012 and began working with Darley, HH Sheikh Mohammed's international racing stable. The role of racing stable hand has involved early starts and not many weekends off, but I've made some amazing contacts in the equine industry and I've been able to travel the country whilst learning more about the racing and thoroughbred breeding industry. I'm currently based in Victoria, working at one of Darley's breeding studs where we will be expecting 25 foals this year. I've been lucky enough to have a hobby that could be turned into a career. I've always been passionate about horses, and even after my riding career ended, I was determined to continue working in the equine industry. Gaining employment in the equine industry is often based on your work experience, as well as how much you've studied. My career pathway has been full of ups and downs, but with the support of my parents, I've never regretted a single moment! My future plans include returning to England next year to complete a degree in Equine Management, with the long term goal of running my own performance horse breeding stud. PAC Athletes Excel at CIS Congratulations to the 30 Penrith Anglican students who competed at the Combined Independent School (CIS) Athletic Championships. It was PAC’s best overall performance in the College’s short history. Many athletes reached Track Finals or were placed in the top ten of Field Events. (Listed below) To place in the top ten of a Field Event or reach a Track Final is an amazing achievement in itself when you think of the many Independent Schools there are in NSW.. The day began with three of our four relay teams qualifying for finals. The Junior Boys Team (Reuben Young, Max Olsson, Hamish Dillion & Hugh Harrold) finished 7th. The Senior Girls Team (Sophie Olsson, Clare Wentworth, Aaliyah Veneros & Sarah Blaikie) stormed home to win the bronze medal. Finally the Junior Girls Team not to be out done won a silver medal, being pipped in the last few strides. Individually Clare Wentworth (Senior Girls Turbo Javelin) and Miles Harrold (Senior Boys Long Jump) won bronze medals. The “Athlete of the Meet” for PAC however, was Hugh Harrold. Hugh had a phenomenal day. He was placed 4th (Junior Boys Discus) and won bronze medals in the Junior Boys Long Jump and 800 Metres. Hugh left his best performance of the day to his last event. With a barn storming finish, Hugh claimed the silver medal in the Junior Boys 200 Metres. Penrith Anglican College has 10 athletes competing at the NSW PSSA Championships in October which once again is our largest representation ever. Overall a wonderful performance by all our athletes. Congratulations to each and everyone of you. We are all extremely proud of your efforts. A husband asked his wife, “Tell me dear, have you ever been in love before?” She thought a moment and replied, “No, Darling. I once respected a man for his great intelligence. I admired another for his remarkable courage. I was captivated by yet another for his good looks and charm. But with you, well, how else could you explain it, except love? True love is not sentiment or words, romance or emotion. All these fade with time, age and familiarity. True love is about intent, a day to day choice to give to another over and above your own needs. In John’s gospel we see God’s intent, to give us his most valuable and precious son. That’s how we know love! God is love and to know God only makes you a better lover! John 3:16 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Join us each Sunday so you can know more about the love of God.
