A study conducted by The National Institute on
Aging reports that the incidence of falls among
community dwelling seniors is 35% for those
aged 65. Studies suggest that as people age the
rates of falls rise.
The results of falls can be serious and life changing. The most common physical injuries associated with a fall include:


You might be asking yourself what factors contribute to a person’s risk for falls.
These risk factors include:


The physical injuries related to a fall are often
easy to see however when a person falls there
are often not so obvious consequences. These

INDEPENDENT LIVING: A GREAT RETIREMENT LIFESTYLE
Our theme for October is independent living. For
many seniors, the decision to come to Primrose is
not based on health-related issues at all. If you
ask our independent living residents why they
chose to move to Primrose, you’ll hear a number
of different reasons.
Some may simply feel overwhelmed by the upkeep of a home that has become too large for
them. Others may be looking for a resort-type
lifestyle where someone else does the cooking
and cleaning for a change. Still others may be
looking for an easier way to spend time in fellowship with more of their peers.
Since fall is now upon us, outdoor activities like
golf, camping, football games and sightseeing
tours of the changing leaves are all popular. Indoor fellowship activities like church bazaars,
bible studies, book clubs and card tournaments

also begin anew during the fall – presenting opportunities for
people to get back in touch with one another after a busy and
hectic summer. Many Primrose residents enjoy participating in
these, and other, activities throughout the year. There is nothing
to hold them back – they can come and go as they please and
enjoy all life has to offer without any of the stress. Of course,
when they are done, they can always come back and enjoy our
beautiful amenities with their friends before retiring to their spacious apartment for the evening.
Many who have made the decision to come to Primrose feel that
they have more freedom and independence than they ever had
before. Their worries are gone, and they have the opportunity to
do all the things they always wanted to do. They are able to enjoy
their independence surrounded by amazing people and incredible
amenities. That is why we are fond of saying that, at Primrose,
this is living!
Spring passes and one remembers one's innocence. Summer passes and
one remembers one's exuberance. Autumn passes and one remembers
one's reverence. Winter passes and one remembers one's perseverance.

The good news is there are many things you can do to prevent
falls and decrease your risk. Stop by the Legacy Healthcare Services Therapy Office and one of our trained professionals can evaluate your falls risk and develop a plan just for you. Our skilled
therapists can guide you through balance and strength training
exercises to improve your walking pattern. We can also assess
your home to ensure your living environment is safe and risk free.
Taking action today could prevent a fall tomorrow. See the inserted therapy questionnaire for a brief assessment.
Beginning on Monday, October 6, we are offering an exercise class
that will combine chair yoga, breathing techniques, and stretching
exercises to promote flexibility and a decrease in pain. All residents are welcome, and no experience is required.
Additionally, each month Legacy Healthcare Services will host a
wellness program—A Lasting Legacy— on the third Tuesday of the
month at 2:00 PM in the Game Room. You can expect to hear upto-date tips to maintain the best possible health as well as be entered to win a door prize! Refreshments will be provided, too.
