Vol u me 7, I s su e 1 News from your Sisterhood O ct ob e r , Nove mb e r , De c e mb er 2014 Ti s h re i, Ch es h va n , K is le v Inside this issue: Our Mission To join together in Sisterhood and, guided by the principles of Reform Judaism, to strengthen our congregation, our community and ourselves. Celebrating Marcia Goldstein’s 26 Years of Service O n Sunday, September 7th, Sisterhood held its Fall General Membership meeting “Mensch Munch Lunch”, honoring Marcia Goldstein for her almost 26 years as IHC’s director of lifelong learning. 100 ladies were in attendance, which is over 1/3 of our total membership! The tables were set with beautiful hydrangeas and the sun shone in so brightly. Lunch was an amazing collection of salads and wonderful pastries by Blue Bakes! To honor Marcia, Patty Goodman and Elyse Chuvalas read a beautiful poem that they wrote especially for Marcia and we all participated in a Marcia trivia game. On behalf of the sisterhood, Amy Isaacs presented Marcia with a lovely framed piece of Judaica and also the poem framed. The remainder of the morning was spent on the business portion of our meeting. We voted and approved our 2015 budget and also voted to make a donation to the “Stop the Sirens” campaign. This campaign will support humanitarian efforts in Israel during this time of conflict. Our members also brought in diapers which we donated to Popsie’s Pantry, as our social action portion of the morning. It was a beautiful morning, not only a perfect day outside but also inside the gathering Fall Membership Meeting 2 Sisterhood Board 2 Ode to a Mensch 3 Programming 4 Religious Living 5 Gift Shop 5 Fundraising 6-7 Membership 7 Staying Connected 7 Mark your Calendar: October Wed 10/1 Sisterhood BOD mtg Fri 10/3 Kol Nidre Sat 10/4 Yom Kippur Sun 10/5 Gift Shop closed (no RS) Wed 10/8 9:15 am Torah Talk Wed/Thurs 10/8-9 Sukkot Tues 10/14 Sisters in the Sukkah Wed/Thurs 10/15-16 Simchat Torah Sun 10/19 Gift Shop closed (no RS) Wed 10/22 9:15 am Torah Talk Wed 10/29 9:15 am Torah Talk November Sun 11/2 Pancake Breakfast Wed 11/5 9:15 am Torah Talk Thurs/Sun 11/6-9 WRJ District Meeting (Columbus, OH) Wed 11/12 Sisterhood BOD mtg Sat/Sun 11/15-16 Collector’s Choice Wed 11/19 9:15 am Torah Talk Wed 11/26 9:15 am Torah Talk Sun 11/30 Gift Shop closed (no RS) December Wed 12/10 Sisterhood BOD mtg Wed 12/3 9:15 am Torah Talk Wed 12/10 9:15 am Torah Talk felt warm and festive and joyous. She has been a tireless presence From her start in ‘89 A director, an educator, And a mentor of every kind. She grew up north on College Near the Vogue and other bars. Tho’ we have no photo proof We’re pretty sure the streets had cars. Her role in special programs, Gifted students, accreditations Early childhood, Jewish Studies And many, many other stations. She’s touched so many lives With her energy and passion And showed us lifelong learning Would always be in fashion As a Girl Scout she sold cookies With “Logan” form she sold a bunch Thin Mints and Samoas Along with Thank U Berry Munch She’s played so many roles With no thoughts of praise or fame, She even showed us all That “underneath we’re all the same.” She was known as “Goody two shoes” For her mind would not corrupt Yet get her in a classroom And she would never quite shut up. If you wonder what she’ll be doing When that retirement time does come The Boston Terrier service dog she trains Will certainly keep her from getting glum And we’re here to shed some tears As we honor Marcia Goldstein After twenty-five-plus years But to truly know our Marcia And understand what motivates Let’s take a look at what exactly Led her to her fates. Her father was an Orthodox Her mother was Reform She’s been a mediator From the moment she was born. The granddaughter of a fur trader From the northern part of the state Who knew she’d become a grader And hone many of a trait Her schooling took her global And every challenge she did meet Whether Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Or Butler down the street. She gained so many friends With her energy and vision I’ve never met someone A delivery of Chinese food So completely absent of derision. Would be divine at every meal A little side note here Unless of course she’s in the mood If for gossip you are starvin’ For hitting up the Colonel for the Don’t bring your latest deal date if you’re a friend The orchards they head to in the ‘cause that’s how fall she met Marvin. With all five grandchildren in tow They pick and schlepp those bushels So then the applesauce can flow Temple Sisterhood of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation So let’s wish her well upon her leave A new chapter with her hubbie. Temple Sisterhood of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation Page 7 Membership We Our Members! Our Sisterhood touches almost every aspect of our temple life. But beyond providing funding and volunteers, being a part of Sisterhood provides each of us an easy and meaningful way to connect with other women to build friendships, study, learn and give back to IHC and our community. Sisterhood of IHC currently boasts 284 members, 34 of whom are new since July of last year. Welcome New Members! Linda Chinsky is originally from New York. She and her husband Rob have been IHC members for 17 years. Linda stays at home and volunteers with Indianapolis Children’s Choir, spends time with family and friends and enjoys reading. The Chinsky’s children, Joshua (17) and Jessica (16) are both Madrichim for the religious school and both have read Torah on Yom Kippur every year since they became a Bar/Bat Mitzvah! Linda chose to rejoin Sisterhood in order to align herself with other women at Temple! Membership in IHC Sisterhood is open to all women members of IHC. You don’t need to be Jewish—just a member of IHC. If you have not yet joined, or would like more information on joining Sisterhood, click here for a membership form, or contact Roberta Dakich ([email protected]) or Sarah Freeman ([email protected]) We look forward to meeting you!
