But it underestimated the impact that the digital camera would have on its business, and was slow to make the transition, holding onto the belief that the demand for traditional cameras would eventually endure, reacting too late to the changing photographic arena. Nevertheless, the company is now successfully relaunching itself, not only in the high-end digital field, but also by using what it knows about image generation and lenses, coupled with its proprietary technology, to create the next generation of space cameras capable of photographing the outer limits of the universe some 13 billion light years away. A Kodak's problems may have arisen from the company's difficulty thinking “outside the box.” Instead of seeing itself as a technology company facing new opportunities, it continued to concentrate on its initial business - the conventional camera. Technology, by its very nature, is an evolving process, and in few places is this more apparent than in the oil and gas industry. New technology, and the adaptation of existing technology, is the driving force behind deepwater exploration. But some of this technology is also finding its way into other areas. At our September meeting, Jami Cheramie with C&C Technologies discussed exactly this topic when he described how AUV technology is being used beyond oil and gas. This is just one of many examples where technology, initially developed to assist in the recovery of hydrocarbons, is and can be adapted to a myriad of different uses. In fact, many of our member companies of the Marine Technology Society, whose core business is offshore oil and gas, have also found a demand for their technology and technological knowhow outside the oil and gas industry. People marvel at how the International Space Station could ever have been assembled, but few realize that much of the methodology was “borrowed” from the techniques and technology developed for deepwater oil and gas exploration. Renewable and sustainable energy sources – currently a very small percentage of the energy market – may eventually become viable sources of energy, as technology makes quantum leaps in harvesting energy, not only from wind and the sun, but also from waves and currents. And in this latter area, who knows and understands more about the forces of the marine environment than the offshore oil and gas industry? While no one can foresee the future, one cannot help but speculate that ® MAGAZINE some time in the future the very companies who are today pioneering deepwater exploration may be using their technological expertise and understanding of the energy and the marine environment to become the forerunners in the development and delivery of new, as yet untapped, energy sources. You can check out some of this technology first hand by attending the Annual MTS Houston Barbecue on October 23, where over 85 companies will be exhibiting their products and services. This is always a great and well-attended event. I look forward to seeing you there. WOMEN WITH ENERGY SUMMIT Offshore Energy Center is holding an inaugural Women with Energy Summit on Wednesday November 12 at the Hilton Post Oak from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. This dynamic event intends to connect and provide women within the offshore and energy industries with a unique professional development experience. Local executives will share their wisdom and expertise, provide coaching and engage in interactive networking activities during tracks entitled: Energy of Communication - Energy of Connection - Energy of Influence Energy of Education.
