We are encouraging everyone to walk or bike to school. We have gotten approval from the fairgrounds to have any staff/students park there and walk from the fairgrounds. Parents may also park there and walk (if you live too far to walk from your house). If you drop your kids off there to walk we ask that they walk in at least pairs so nobody is walking alone. We have also notified the Police Department so they know more kids than usual will be walking that day and they can help us out if needed for traffic. Please encourage your students to participate. See attached flyer. Parent/Teacher Conferences October 23rd is our Parent/Teacher Conferences. There will be no school that day for our students. Teachers will be sending home more information regarding your conference soon. Fall Costume Parade October 30th elementary will participate in the Fall Costume Parade. Students may bring their costumes to school and we will allow them time to change for our parade at 2:30. (Please no face paint, hair color or weapons) Our community businesses share in the fun of this. They join us and hand out candy for our students. Make sure to thank them for participating. Without them we could not do this. Attached is a form if your business is interested in participating this year. Mrs. Sewald - Library The leaves are changing, the days are cool and the nights are chilly. That must mean it’s time to FALL into a good book! Our Kiowa Elementary Library is a busy place! This year we have so many new books for your child to read, and of course many classic books that have withstood the test of time. Thanks to book grants and our Scholastic Book Fairs, I have been able to add to our library collection ensuring that your child can keep up with the adventures of their favorite literary characters. We are exploring all of the fiction and nonfiction genres this year, and library time features stories and discussion that I hope will foster their love of reading. October is also time for our Fall Book Fair. We will open our book fair on October 20th and stay open through parent teacher conferences on October 23rd. Books provide families with a great reason to share time together. They make great holiday gifts too! Please stop by during the week and support our library. Scholastic has provided hundreds of books and items for our library that benefit your child. See you there! Student Senate KPTCC KPTCC is asking for parents to help us provide a hot, homemade meal for the teachers during Parent Teacher conferences on Thursday, October 23. We will be serving a selection of homemade soups, salad, bread, and desserts. If you are willing to provide an item for the meal, please contact Sue Walker @ 720-245-4541. BoxTops: Keep those BoxTops coming in. We will be sending off our first collection at the end of October and it takes considerable time to get them ready. Bonus BoxTops, EBoxTops and/or EScripts are nearing the expiration date for redemption. Please turn these in ASAP. All funds collected through these programs benefit many programs in Kiowa Schools, and are “free money” so, please don’t throw it away! Check the bulletin board inside the double doors of the Elementary school for BoxTop updates and information on how KPTCC is helping support Kiowa Schools. Ask your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors and everyone to save Box Tops and EScripts for us. We also collect Campbell’s soup labels, used cell phones and computer ink cartridges. All items collected may be turned in to your school office. Call Betty Hood at 303-243-0755 if you have any questions. Do you shop at Target? Did you know that Target supports Kiowa schools? Choose your favorite Kiowa school when you shop at Target using your Target RED card. Target will donate 1% of your RED card purchases to Kiowa Schools on any purchases made at Target and Target.com. TRIBE Warrior To be a TRIBE Warrior is a special honor. To earn this honor you must be showing Tribe everyday all day long plus not lose any classroom incentives. Each classroom has some kind of incentive, sticks, cards, marbles, etc., to be a TRIBE Warrior you must be giving your best at all times. TRIBE Warriors will be announced every Monday. TRIBE Warriors will be given a TRIBE Warrior button to wear for the following week. Every day of the week you are selected as a TRIBE Warrior, wear your button so you can go to the front of the lunch line. Also, the Thursday after you are named TRIBE Warrior you will be getting a “to go lunch” and having lunch with a special person in one of the classrooms. TRIBE Warriors will have their picture taken and be able to write a paragraph about how they earned the honor of TRIBE Warrior to be displayed on the bulletin board in front of the Elementary Library. Keep your button; when you are TRIBE Warrior more than once we will add a sticker to it. We will be having an Ultimate TRIBE activity at the end of each semester. To be invited to attend, you will need to have earned TRIBE Warrior at least once in the semester and consistently show TRIBE. Good luck, we hope to see your picture on the TRIBE Warrior bulletin board soon. Congratulations to the following TRIBE Warriors: Week of September 15, 2014 Gabehart – Molly Piper S. Mrs. Gabehart – Pre-school In the month of October the Preschool will be doing units on Transportation, Seasons, fall and Leaves and Halloween and Pumpkins. We have been very busy learning how to write our names, letters and numbers. We have been learning the days of the week and months of the year and talking about yesterday and tomorrow. This month we will start to learn about all the coins and how much money each of them are worth. October is a busy month with picture retakes on the 14th, Parent/Teacher Conferences on the 23rd, and our Halloween party on the 29th. Please check your child’s folder each day for information to follow on all of these events. Fall is here so please send your child to school with a jacket as the weather starts to change. Have a Happy October!! Mrs. Donnellon – Kindergarten Here we are already into fall. Where is the time going? This month we will be learning about plants and their live cycles. We will also be studying some life cycles of other animals. We will continue to work hard on our letters and sounds so that we can begin to write and read fluently and more easily. We will also work on our sight words. Once the students have all 40 words memorized from the year, I will bring them a root beer float during lunch! They love it. In writing we will continue to work on using a web to plan our writing and writing complete sentences using capitals and periods. I am not worried about correct spelling when they sound out words, as long as they are hearing the beginning sounds, middle sounds and ending sounds of words. All of the spelling rules that our crazy language uses will come later. We have parent teacher conferences this month and I am excited to meet with you all to discuss your child’s progress! Mrs. Carnahan – 1st The first grade class has been working hard and learning a lot! This month in Math, we will be working on different strategies for doing subtraction with numbers up to 10. We will continue to practice mental math and work with touch points. Our Reading lessons will have stories about friends & neighbors, and we will practice blending words with short vowels. Our Spelling words each week will also be short vowel words. The kids are doing a great job learning the spelling words! We will learn about nouns, verbs, & adjectives in Grammar. We will practice handwriting & writing complete sentences and adding details. In Science, we will learn about animals & plants and focus on their characteristics and their needs. We are going to learn about our community in Social Studies. First graders are going to have a busy month! Mrs. Moorman – 2nd Second grade has been working really hard at reading stories and being able to answer questions going along with the story. Make sure to ask your student questions about what they have read from their nightly reading homework. Asking them basic questions like; who, what, when, where and how are very beneficial to their reading comprehension. In reading we will be learning about using context clues to help us understand what we are reading, parts of a story, cause and effect, author’s word choice and author’s purpose. In writing we will be wrapping up narrative writing and working on informative writing. In phonics/language arts we will be working with words that have a common final blend (nd, ng, nt, ft, xt, mp), double consonants and ck words, consonant digraphs (th, sh, wh, ch, tch, ph), base words/endings (-s, -ed, and –ing) and contractions. In math we will be continuing place value and adding and subtracting. In math we will be finishing place value and then moving on to addition facts. We will be working with doubles facts, adding 3 addends, making a ten to add and repeated addition. In science we will be wrapping up learning about science safety and the scientific method and moving on to learning about the different layers of the Earth and Water. In Social Studies we will move into what it means to be a good citizen all around the world and about history and time and how our world has evolved over the years. Please watch for information about the Fall Costume party/parade. If you signed up to participate for the Halloween festivities during back to school night, please expect a phone call coming from our room mom Ashley Kinman. I’m very proud of each and every one of your students. They are growing and learning so much already in second grade! Mrs. Ehlers/Ms. Carnahan – 3rd Time is passing quickly; it’s hard to believe that we are halfway through the first quarter. The 3rd Grade enjoyed an exciting field trip, chaperoned by Mrs. Miner, Mrs. Buker, Mrs. Lindaur and Mrs. Clausen, to the new History Colorado Museum. They took an interactive tour about people and places in Colorado History. They had farm chores to complete; attended a rural school; rode in a Model T; mined for gold, including setting dynamite charges, and sat through a Colorado dust storm. In the afternoon we toured the State Capitol and saw the brilliant new gold dome. We also took lots of notes about the building materials used in the Capitol as we are studying rock and minerals in science. In math we finish our first chapter about strategies for determining sums and differences. We will now be working on graphs and interrupting data in addition to working on multiplication; addition and subtraction. In reading we are working on cause and effect, along with finding text evidence to support answers. In writing we are working on personal narratives. In language we are reviewing proper and common nouns, identifying different parts of speech and writing complete paragraphs. The 3rd Grade has settled in very nicely to their routines. Homework is taking less time and being turned in on time – YEA! We appreciate all the time and support that you give to your student; this is time well spent and will enhance their future in ways that you won’t even know about. Thank you! Mrs. Henderson/Ms. Pfeifer -4th Happy fall! We are definitely hard at work in 4th grade! We are finishing up our energy unit in science and will be moving into social studies, which will find us learning about the geography of Colorado. We have been working on personal narratives in writing and are finishing those up as well. The students have written about memorable moments and their most embarrassing moments. Math has us working with multi-digit multiplication problems. PLEASE encourage your student to be practicing their multiplication facts at home. Knowing their basic facts is so important as we move into these harder multiplication problems! We continue to read great stories in reading and work on reading skills and strategies the students need to be great readers. Make sure they are reading as much as they can each day. We will be taking our field trip on October 9th. Please make sure to send a lunch and water bottle with your student that day and also have them wear tennis shoes. At the end of the month will be our Fall Costume Parade and Halloween party. If you are interested in helping with that please let either Mrs. Henderson or Ms. Pfeifer know! We are planning on combining for this and will be sending home more information in the next couple weeks. Mrs. McClain/Ms. Donnellon - 5th 5th grade will be starting informational writing. We will be doing research to help with our writing and focusing on our word choice and ideas. During reading we will be talking about cause and effect, main idea and details, and author’s purpose. During science we are going to start talking about the human body and our body systems. We will see how cells connect and make up everything in our body. In Social Studies we will be studying the 5 regions of the United States starting with the West Region. Students will be learning the spelling and location of each state within the region. We will start learning about division in math. Please make sure you are practicing math facts at home every night! Watch for information about Fall Costume Parade and the party. Mrs. Kinsey P.E. PHYSICAL EDUCATION IMPORTANT Parents, please make sure that you have signed and returned my physical education form if your child has any medical conditions that may affect them in PE. Coming up in October we will be focusing on kicking, footwork, balance and activities that involve the lower body. Students will be able to demonstrate how to kick a ball, control a ball and how to increase their lower body strength and their balance. This month you can practice kicking and balance with your students and if you are feeling really ambitious you can play a game of “keep away” with a ball with them as well. Students are already taking several steps in PE. We are continuing to use pedometers and encouraging activity throughout PE class. If you would like to help your child get extra physical activity each day, purchasing a pedometer and rewarding them for steps is a great way to motivate them. Physical activity each day increases children’s ability to process and retain information. Eating healthy and getting plenty of exercise will give your student the best chance for success in school and in life. Remember, your encouragement is very important to your child’s health; you are their best and strongest role models. I look forward to another great year with your students. Have a wonderful October. Happy Halloween! Mrs. Kinsey Be sure to check out our updated web site. It has lots of new information: Go to www.kiowaschool.org
