My 1971 Dodge is the One That Got Away!
By: John Hawbecker, Salem, SC
While stationed at Clark AFB Philippines, I
decided to purchase a new car at the end of
my tour. So I went down to the PX and talked
with the Chrysler representative. I ended up
purchasing a new 1971 Dodge Dart Swinger.
The car was equipped with 3 speed on the
column, 318V-8, P/S, P/B, A/C, radio and
whitewall tires. The car was to be delivered to
Portland, Oregon, because, at the time, there
would be no sale tax on it.
The car was picked up in Portland on a
Sunday with the wife and two young children
in tow. We took a taxi to the dealership and when we took possession of the car we discovered we
could not get the key out. The car had to be in reverse and apparently was not going into gear far
enough to release the key. A mechanic had to be called and he was not very happy about having to
come in on a Sunday. After some adjustment, everything was fine and we took off for a cross
country journey with a brand new car.
We took five days doing the northern route and I must say the two kids were just great. Maybe
because they knew bodily harm was in store if they didn't behave! Our first stop was Boise, Idaho.
We arrived late and by the time we got a motel and found a place to eat it was even later. The
restaurant we picked at random turned out to be a fancy steak house and we got some very stern
looks arriving with two small children at 9:00 p.m. The kids never said a word during the entire
dinner and never fussed once. Following several other stops, we thought we would treat the kids to
the St. Louis Zoo, which we did - in the rain! It just turned out that way. Then we finally reached our
destination, my parents' home in Elmira, NY.
Just a few days later we decided to make a trip to Florida, so all of us crammed into the two door
hardtop and off we went. We only logged a few miles when my son vomited right down between the
front seat backs. Not a very pleasant experience to say the least and I was understandably upset
since it was a new car with pale yellow upholstery! We only stayed a few days in Florida. My Dad
got a severe sunburn on his legs, so we never saw him the entire time there!
When home leave was up, I had orders to ship the car to our next post - Seoul, South Korea. I drove
the car to the docks in New York City and somehow found the ship, but I sure wouldn't want to try
that today! I watched as the car was driven on to the boat, caught a taxi to the airport and flew
home. The car arrived in fine shape and we drove the car for 3 years while stationed in Seoul. By
the time the tour ended, the car still had very low miles. Our next post was Singapore and I was not
allowed to ship the car because it was left hand drive, so I sold it in Seoul. I gave all the paperwork
to the new owner thinking he might need it to prove how the car got into the country.
Years later, I regretted selling that car because I had the option of shipping it back to Washington
and putting it into storage. In hind sight (which is always great), I wish I had done just that. Another
good reason... the wife really liked that car! A few years ago, I started a search for that car not
having any registration information or VIN. To date, I have almost exhausted all avenues and have
come up with nothing. Most of the responses have been "we don't have records that far back." I
have not given up though and continue to search the internet in the hopes someday that car might
turn up, but I don't even know if it ever left Korea.
I welcome any feedback from members concerning my search for the one that got away.

Captains CARageous
By: Matthew Hocker
Once known as the "Poet of the Empire," Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was one of the most prolific
British authors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His poems, short stories and novels were
known the world over; the Jungle Book (1894) and Captains Courageous (1896) are among some of
his most famous works. In addition to his love for writing, Kipling was an early proponent of the
automobile. He purchased his first car in 1900, a steam-powered Locomobile he would refer to as a
"nickel-plated fraud" due to frequent breakdowns. Subsequent vehicles included a twin cylinder
Lanchester and a number of Rolls-Royce cars, including a 1928 Phantom I.
In 1904, Kipling wrote about his automotive experiences in a
letter to A.B. Filson Young, and Young reprinted it in his book,
The Complete Motorist. Kipling acknowledged the past
shortcomings of early automobiles, including problems with
reliability and the stereotype they were mere playthings for the
rich. However, he considered himself a pioneer of a technology
that would one day be considered practical. Exhaustive in his
explanation, he wrote, "my agonies, shames, delays, rages,
chills, purboilings, road-walkings, water-drawings, burns, and
starvations, at which you laughed - in the Kinfauns Castle in 1900
- all went to make your car to-day safe and comfortable."
Kipling often drew on personal experiences when crafting tales,
so it should come as no surprise to find automobiles worked their
way into some of his stories. Written in rhyming verse, his poem
"The Ballad of the Cars" featured anthropomorphic vehicles
discussing the death of a man in an automobile accident. Names
of participants in the conversation were those of real makes,
including "Babe Austin," Daimler and Armstrong Siddeley.
In 1904 Kipling published Traffics and Discoveries, a collection of
short stories and poems, including a few in which automobiles
played a pivotal role. One such story titled Steam Tactics
revolved around piloting a steam-powered car, offering a vivid
depiction of how complicated driving such a vehicle must have
been. Largely inspired by his difficulties with the Locomobile, the
narrator in Kipling's story claimed, "that car (now, thank Heaven,
no more than an evil memory) never lit twice in the same
fashion."
Another story from Traffics and Discoveries worth noting is 'They,'
a piece which would eventually be published as a standalone
book. On one hand, the story represented Kipling's love for the
automobile. In Kipling's letter to Young, he commented that his
favorite aspect of driving was "...the discovery of England." This
was reflected in the narrator of the story, a motorist who
discovered an enchanting home in the countryside.
However, 'They' also served as a means for helping Kipling cope
with the death of his firstborn daughter, Josephine. She lost her
life to pneumonia at the tender age of six, leaving Kipling
devastated. In 'They,' the narrator encountered a blind woman
who always spoke of children, but he found them elusive
throughout the story. Eventually, he revealed the death of his own
daughter, having felt a kiss on his hand as his child had so often
done while she was alive. At the story's end, it was revealed
"They" were the ghosts of dead children whom could only be
seen by their parents. Like the story's main character, Kipling
reported that he sometimes thought he saw Josephine out of the corner of his eye.
Rudyard Kipling himself would pass away in 1936, but not before leaving an indelible mark on
society. His stories are revered as classics and, while many of his views remain outdated, his vision
of the automobile arguably still resonates today. "A day in a car...is a day in some fairy museum
where all the exhibits are alive and real and yet none the less delightfully mixed up with books."
