Honor Our Auto Hobby's "Holiday" This July: Collector Car Appreciation Day

The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) supports the SEMA Action
Network (SAN) in declaring July 10, 2015 as National Collector Car
Appreciation Day (CCAD). It is a day to help raise awareness of the entire car
hobby and its role in American society. This will be the sixth consecutive year
for what has become an annual event to recognize the importance of
automotive restoration and collection. Each year since 2010, this "holiday" has
been marked by a U.S. Senate Resolution at the request of the SAN to honor
the classics of the past and the future.
The U.S. Senate recently passed Senate Resolution 196 (S. Res. 196), sponsored by
Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus Co-Chairs Senator Richard Burr
(R-NC) and Senator Jon Tester (D-MT). The Senators are strong advocates for the automotive
hobby in Washington and recognize the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our
nation's appreciation for the automobile's unique historical place in our history. The Caucus is an
informal, non-partisan group that pays tribute to America's ever growing love affair with the car and
motorsports. As this annual event continues to grow worldwide, states, provinces, counties and
cities are following suit with their own recognition.
"As a leading authority in the collector car community, the AACA's involvement with Collector Car
Appreciation Day each year has been vital to the celebration's growth and reinforced its spirit
nationwide," said SEMA Vice President of Government Affairs Steve McDonald. "AACA members
are among the thousands of auto enthusiasts taking advantage of this opportunity to honor our
great American hobby by showing off their cars and celebrating new traditions. Car clubs,
businesses and other organizations across the country will also be hosting their own tributes to this
special day."
If your Club or Region has a happening planned during the month of July, you are invited to submit
its information on the official CCAD site without cost by filling out this online form. Events can
range from informal gatherings and club meetings to more organized events, such as car shows,
tours, cruises and parades. This list will help auto enthusiasts nationwide find events in their local
area to join in and celebrate. Participating organizers will receive a complimentary copy of the
Congressional resolution for display at each registered event.

Please Join Us in Promoting Collector Car Appreciation Day

For the past five years, the Specialty Equipment Market Association or SEMA has secured a United
States Senate proclamation recognizing Collector Car Appreciation Day. This year that day is
Friday, July 10th. All of us understand the need to spread the word about AACA to both young and
old. Collector Car Appreciation Day presents a tremendous and unique opportunity to spread the
word about our part of the antique vehicle hobby and, most importantly, secure new members for
your Region or Chapter.
It's not too late to organize a successful AACA hosted event in your area supporting CCAD and
showcasing your Region or Chapter. Find a local Cruise-In this weekend, call your friends in other
clubs, post flyers in auto parts stores and other places and promote the idea of a celebration of ALL
vehicles. As a good host, your group should welcome vehicles and enthusiasts of all types. This is
the one of the best ways to share our part of the hobby with others. If you don't share, you can't
expect others to enjoy our love of preservation and restoration. Enthusiasts are generally
enthusiasts and that collector of late model Japanese or German cars might just be the next spark
plug for your club with a new found love for restored prewar vehicles.
Organize your members and appoint someone to handle publicity. Most if not all newspapers, radio
stations and television stations will give you free on-air promotion of your event for the asking.
Radio and television are required to "act in the public interest" through public service
announcements or PSAs. There might be a local morning show you can get a spot on. The media is
constantly searching for new material. Tell the story of your Region and what they do while
highlighting a special car story about a member or their vehicle. Go out and publicize your Collector
Car Appreciation Day celebration hosted by your local AACA! There has never been a better reason
to invite others to join up. Get started right now!

PA Turnpike 75th Anniversary Car Show
A major milestone is on the horizon for the Pennsylvania Turnpike
Commission (PTC). Considered America's First Superhighway, the
PTC will celebrate its 75th anniversary October 1, 2015 -- the day
the Turnpike first opened to travelers. The PTC is offering
interviews, photos and video to all media outlets in an effort to tell
the story of its 75 years of transportation innovation.
In the late 1930s, controversy surrounded the building of the Pa.
Turnpike. Business owners along the route feared customers would
bypass their shops by traveling the Turnpike. Many restaurant
owners actually posted signs reading "No Turnpike Workers
Allowed" because they resented the possible loss of business they
felt the Turnpike would create. However, just the opposite happened
and the opening of the Pa. Turnpike actually created economic
development across the state.
Designed to move people and goods from east to west, the PTC established the national standard
for limited access highways for the entire country. In the first fifteen days of operation, 150,000
motorists - or 10,000 per day - paid to use this new innovative highway system. That figure was
double what the Turnpike's own traffic planners expected. Now 75 years later, the PTC is still
forging ahead with transportation tradition and technology.
Throughout 2015, the PTC has several activities planned to celebrate this milestone. Beginning with
a website countdown to October 1, 2015, the PTC will also be offering an updated and lively history
video, a coffee table book rich with a variety of Pa. Turnpike images and an antique car show, all of
which leads up to a PTC main event being planned at the Pennsylvania State Museum in
Harrisburg, Pa. This event will showcase a new transportation display featuring an original Pa.
Turnpike toll booth from the Irwin Interchange circa 1940 and other Pa. Turnpike artifacts.
There is a planned car show on August 8th at the Sideling Hill Interchange. The show will be from
10:00 AM to 2:00 PM (field open at 8:00).







Wow! The last time the AAA Glidden Tour® was in Oklahoma City
was June 24, 1910. It's an honor to bring it back to Oklahoma City
for the 70th anniversary of the tour.
The 70th Revival AAA Glidden Tour is being hosted by the Okie
Region of the AACA. The Glidden Tour is the oldest and largest automobile touring event in
America. The first tour was sponsored by the American Automobile Association (AAA) in 1904 to
promote the use of the automobile and help create standardized laws for the use of automobiles.
The endurance races were held annually until 1913.
In 1946, the Veterans Motor Car Club of America (VMCCA) revived the Glidden Tour® and the
tours have been held every year since. The 2015 tour will be a hub (single host hotel) and spoke
(travel up to 65 miles out from the host hotel and back) tour. Between 200 and 250 pre-1943
automobiles are expected to participate (450 - 600 people).

We will be based out of Dover, Ohio, in the middle of
small town Ohio with rolling picturesque countryside

collections, and you may even get up close and
personal with the Goodyear blimp! Based on popular
requests, we are also planning a "post tour" Saturday

The 1946 Automotive Golden Jubilee

For the citizens of Detroit, the year 1946 was a cause for
celebration. World War II had ended, thanks in part to the
200,000 Detroiters who served and the wartime production
of factories in "Motor City." With the war over, the
automotive industry was once again able to concentrate its
efforts on civilian production. As fate would have it, the year
th
also marked both Detroit's sesquicentennial and the 50
anniversary of the first Detroit-built auto (the 1896 King). To
commemorate these achievements, automotive
manufacturers rallied together to organize the 1946
Automotive Golden Jubilee.
While the stated reasons for holding the event were positive,
the automotive giants also desired to fight the negative
perceptions their city had received in recent years. Race
riots in 1943 caused significant property damage, left 34
people dead and wounded more than 400. To top it all off, a
strike led by United Auto Workers effectively shut down GM
from the tail-end of 1945 through March 1946.
With a diverse group of companies banding together to
organize the event, the industry was trying to demonstrate
the type of city Detroit could be. Celebrating the industry's
past and the potential for what lay ahead paralleled similar
hopes for Detroit. "Unity is the name of Detroit," proclaimed the Jubilee program. "If we can do it in
war, we can do it in peace... And we're going right ahead and meet our peace problems as we meet
our war
problems."
All the
more impressive was that the twelve
day event
was planned in little more than two
months.
Behind it all was the Golden Jubilee
Organizing Committee, which
consisted
of several big names in the industry,
including
George Romney (then General
Manager
for the Automobile Manufacturer's
Association). At the helm of the
committee was General Chairman,
William
Knudsen. Knudsen was well equipped
for the
task at hand, having served as a
Lieutenant General for the U.S. Army
during
WWII. Prior to that appointment, he
was the
head of General Motors.
In orchestrating the event, one of the main goals was to
create the automotive equivalent of a world's fair, complete
with fancy parade floats, exhibitions, celebrity guest
appearances and even a Golden Jubilee Queen. Like any
world's fair, the event also had its own emblem. Created by
esteemed automotive artist, Arthur Radebaugh, the design
featured an antique vehicle and modern-day car in front of
a towering atom. His image symbolized how far the industry
had come in such a short time, coupled with the promise of
what lay ahead.
The stars of the show were arguably the legions of antique
cars participating in the festivities, which included the Motor
City Cavalcade and the Antique Automotive Exposition.
Although the major manufacturers had vehicles on display
(some even produced literature celebrating their heritage),
the Organizing Committee also invited contributions from
antique car owners throughout the U.S. Vehicles from
enthusiasts were restricted to those made prior to 1915 and
the first three model years for makes that appeared after
the fact (Manufacturers faced no such restrictions).
To further entice folks, there were plenty of awards on hand
including one for people's choice. The vehicle with the most
points would win the grand prize, which consisted of a
ribbon and brand-spanking-new '46 Hudson Commodore
nd
Six 4-door sedan. The 2 quarter 1946 issue of Antique
Automobile reported the lucky winners were Mr. and Mrs.
George Green of Lambertville, New Jersey, with their
1904 Curved Dash Oldsmobile. Mr. Green had purchased
the car in 1907 and had owned it ever since.
Despite being organized in only two months, the
Automotive Golden Jubilee was a resounding success.
Over two hundred vehicles were on hand for the event,
121 of which were contributed by individual owners, and
the citizens of Detroit came out in droves to see the
spectacle. While the Jubilee may not have healed the

city's underlying problems, it brought people together and
provided a glimmer of hope for the future.

The Elegance at Hershey Announces Show Results
The Elegance at Hershey hosted another
successful and eye-popping weekend of activities.
The 5th year for this event had record-breaking
attendance, beautiful weather and some of the
most spectacular cars ever seen in one place.
The Hotel Hershey was once again the host for
three full days of events including The Grand
Ascent hill climb for vintage race cars, the 5K
Challenge runners' race, the crazy and unique
Concorso Bizarro and, of course, The Elegance
Garden Party where spectators could walk among
the hotel gardens and over 70 of the world's finest
collector cars in existence.
The Elegance has previously donated $560,000
to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
(JDRF), the AACA Museum and the
1948 Daimler DE-36 "Green Goddess,"
owned by Mark Hyman takes Best In Show
AACA Library & Research Center. Thanks to the
success of this weekend and the generosity of our
sponsors and guests, we will once again be able
to make a substantial donation to our charities.
The Elegance Garden Party on Sunday lived up
to its promise. Artistry in Motion was this year's
theme as the magnificent cars looked like works
of art nestled on the beautiful grounds of The
Hotel Hershey. Each in its own right was a
winner, but, in the end, the superb 1948 Daimler
DE36 Drophead Coupe owned by Mr. Mark
Hyman of St. Louis, MO, drove off with the
coveted Elegance at Hershey Best of Show, also
known as the Governor's Cup.

Not to be forgotten, the Concorso Bizarro also had an impressive group of entrants and awards
were chosen there also. The Hagerty Youth opted to bestow their award on the fabulous Cartoon
Truck owned by Bob Luczun of Clifton, NJ, while our celebrity judge, Miss Idaho Sierra Sandison,
decided on two Best of Show winners - the Hillbilly Model A Truck owned by John Kauffman of
Shermandale, PA, and the Coffin Rod designed and built by Dustin Chestnut of Newmanville, PA.
On Friday and Saturday the Ascent at Hershey saw 25 cars racing the historic hill course in the
back of The Hotel Hershey. The Ascent brings out some amazing historic race cars and this year
was no exception and even included a 16-cylinder Bugatti! Charity rides were given in these cars at
noon and more than one patron was found cleaning the bugs off their teeth. Graham Long in his
Lotus Super Seven was once again the quickest over the weekend.
Saturday also saw men and women of all ages racing up and down the same course that the race
cars ran and further on Boathouse Road to a leg-burning 5K that they will all remember. Going up
was definitely a challenge, but going down was a challenge as well and we applaud all of the
runners for their effort. The overall winner was Kevin Fuller at 18 minutes and the overall female
winner was Mary Dell at 18.49 minutes.
We thank all of the car owners for sharing their
magnificent machines with us for one short day.
Every car was indeed a winner in its own way,
delighting the crowd that joined us. Thank you
also to our Grand Marshalls Leigh and Leslie
Keno, TV star Wayne Carini, our sponsors and
donors, our staff, hundreds of volunteers, our
patrons and the team at Hotel Hershey and
Hershey Entertainment and Resorts for their
herculean efforts to make this year's Elegance at
Hershey a seamless extravaganza. Plans are
already afoot to make the 2016 Elegance at
Hershey even better.

AACA Partnering with Harris Connect to
Produce 80th Anniversary Member Album
AACA is once again partnering with Harris Connect Publishing Company to produce our 80th
Anniversary Member Album. We did this project once before five years ago during our 75th
Anniversary year.
The 80th Anniversary Member Album will feature a colorful gallery of photos, stories and valuable
contact information for members. The publication will also celebrate the club's 80-year history of
supporting and promoting the antique automobile hobby.
Harris Connect has already started sending out emails, postcards and making individual phone calls
to AACA members. During these phone calls, Harris Connect will ask you to verify your name, your
spouse/partner's name, your address, phone and email. They will ask for your chapter or region
affiliation. They will also ask if you would like to list your business information. Members will be
allowed to include a listing of up to 10 vehicles owned as well. Members will be encouraged to
submit photos and short stories to be included in this special publication, too.
All current AACA members will be listed in the album. Being listed in the album in no way obligates
you to purchase the album. Harris Connect will discuss with you on your call the various options,
formats and costs for the album that are available. Again, there is no obligation to buy the album,
but we can tell you that it will be a beautiful, historic AACA piece that you will most likely want to add
to your current collection.
