Monthly Taking an active role in your good health is what Sacred Heart’s Senior Spirit! program is all about. Octobe r 2 0 1 4 New Procedure Advances Early Diagnosis of Lung Cancer S acred Heart is the first hospital in the Pensacola area to provide technology called Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) as an option for patients who have learned they have a hard-to-reach tumor or other suspicious spot on a lung. The procedure combines GPS-like technology with a catheter-based system that navigates through the patient’s airways to locate and examine lung lesions that were previously hard to reach. “This new procedure will allow us to diagnose early-stage lung cancers more effectively, when the treatment is more likely to be curative,” said Dr. Peter Bercz, a pulmonologist with Pensacola Lung Group. “Before this technology became available, the best way to biopsy these tumors was to pass a needle through the chest into the lung, which carries a substantial risk for serious complications. With ENB, we have an additional minimally-invasive option for lung biopsy which may reduce complication rates and improve overall outcomes.” Traditionally, a patient with a spot on a lung has the options of major surgery to remove a section of the lung, bronchoscopy (which does not reach lesions deep in the lung), a needle biopsy to remove lung tissue for examination, or watchful waiting. Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy is typically performed in an outpatient setting and it minimizes the need for more invasive procedures to access areas of the lung that are harder to reach. Its unique approach may increase the chances that a patient will safely get a diagnosis and begin treatment, if needed. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. The survival rate for lung cancer is quite high if it is detected at an early stage, before it has spread outside the lung. But in the Pensacola area at least, most lung cancers are found at a late stage (Stages 3 and 4) when the survival rates are much lower. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy are used to treat lung cancer. If the cancer can be completely removed, surgery provides the best chance for a cure. Sacred Heart’s accredited Cancer Center offers a team approach to lung cancer treatment with care coordinated by a team that includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, pulmonologists, pathologists, neurosurgeons, nurse navigators, social workers and researchers. The Cancer Center is affiliated with MD Anderson Cancer Network®. Through the cancer network, the certified doctors of Sacred Heart team up with experts at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center – a national leader in cancer care – to bring new hope to local cancer patients.
