Monthly Taking an active role in your good health is what Sacred Heart’s Senior Spirit! program is all about. February 2 0 1 5 Guard against heart disease H eart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States, with nearly half a million Americans dying of the heart attacks caused by the disease each year. Heart disease occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become hardened and narrowed. At Sacred Heart Health System, our primary care physicians and cardiologists use a variety of tests to diagnose heart disease faster and more accurately than ever before, thanks to advanced new technology. The choice of diagnostic tool depends on a variety of factors including a patient’s medical history and individual health problems. Among the diagnostic tools available at Sacred Heart are: mE lectrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), which is a graphic record of the electrical activity of the heart as it contracts and rests. mS tress test or treadmill test, which is used to record the heartbeat during exercise. This helps your doctor determine how well your heart can handle work. mC ardiac catheterization, coronary angiography or arteriography, which are tests used to explore the coronary arteries using a fine tube (catheter) that is put into an artery of an arm or leg and passed through into the arteries of the heart. Dye is injected through the catheter, and the heart and blood vessels are filmed while the heart pumps to see if there are any blockages. mE chocardiography, which uses sound waves to create an image of the heart. mC T scan, which is an imaging technique that provides crosssectional images of the chest, including the heart and major vessels. The PET/CT Imaging Center of Northwest Florida (a joint venture of Pensacola Radiology and Sacred Heart Health System) acquired a new PET/CT scanner with cardiac imaging capabilities, which means that heart disease can be diagnosed faster and more accurately. mM agnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), a type of imaging involving the use of magnetic fields to look inside the body and head. mN uclear heart scan, which uses radioactive tracers to outline heart chambers and major blood vessels leading to and from the heart to look for damage to the heart muscles. mN uclear stress test, which shows the working of the heart muscle by injecting a small amount of radioactive material into a vein. It’s usually done in conjunction with an exercise stress test on a treadmill or bicycle. Once diagnosed, depending on the patient’s medical history and the severity of the disease, a variety of non-invasive treatments are available, including lifestyle changes and medications. In severe cases, Sacred Heart cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons can open or bypass clogged arteries with catheter procedures or heart surgery. The important thing to remember is that coronary heart disease is a serious diagnosis, and it requires a lifetime of vigilance in order to stay healthy. Although medication and surgery may relieve the symptoms of heart disease, you also need to make the changes necessary to develop a healthy lifestyle. For more information, please call Sacred Heart at (850) 416-4770 or visit us online at www.sacred-heart.org. Make plans to attend one of our Healthy Living Seminars! Program details on page 3. It’s not too late to make healthy New Year’s resolutions January isn’t the only time to make healthy resolutions. If you didn’t set goals for 2015 (or perhaps you’ve already given up on the ones you initially made), now is the time to formulate a plan. Make sure you start the new year strong with these resolutions: Get enough sleep Older adults need just as much sleep as younger people. Make sure to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Choose fruits and vegetables Experts recommend eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Get moving Go for a hike outdoors, play a round of golf, use exercise machines, or practice yoga. These activities will not only keep you in shape, but you will feel better and enjoy life more. Guard against falls Eliminate items in your home that are easy to trip over (like throw rugs) and install night lights so it’s easier to walk around when it’s dark. Speak up Feeling sad or irritable? Have a question about a medication you’re taking? Don’t keep it to yourself. Tell a family member, friend, or neighbor, and talk to your healthcare professional. Sacred Heart Leads Florida Hospitals in Patient Engagement A new hospital study that analyzes patient engagement has rated Sacred Heart’s three hospitals among the five best in the State of Florida. SHHEC is ranked No. 1, SHHP No. 3 and SHHG No. 5, out of 160 Florida hospitals included in the study. The patient-engagement ratings are based on four factors: readmission rates, patient satisfaction, patient education and the health system’s degree of engaging communities on social media. Becker’s Hospital Review worked with Axial Exchange to develop the hospital ratings of patient engagement. Axial reported that the leading health systems: • Provide patients with information and tools that support self-care • Enable patients to have rich online interactions with the health system, both through patient portals and through social media • Have low 30-day readmission rates • Have high patient-satisfaction (HCAHPS) scores. You can see the full list of Florida hospital rankings at http://axialexchange.com/ engagement/state/fl. Did You Know? S acred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast offers a stroke support group.
