or exercise. However,
if you ask Dr. Ornish
the most important
part of his program, his answer might surprise
you.
October is breast cancer awareness month
and I invite you to join the Pink Army at
www.jointhepinkarmy.com to help fight breast
cancer in our community. There will be
numerous opportunities throughout the
community to participate and move up the
Pink Army ranks.
October also gives us the chance to attend the
Orange City Movie in the Park on Oct. 3
beginning at dusk. The 2nd annual Howl at the
Moon Golf Tournament takes place at Sandhill
Golf Course on Friday, Oct. 10 with tee off at
5:30 pm. This DeLand Area Chamber of
Commerce/Orange City Alliance event
benefits The House Next Door. Sponsorship

In his book Love and Survival: The Scientific
Basis for the Healing Power of Intimacy, Dr.
Ornish writes, "I’m not aware of any other
factor in medicine – not diet, not smoking, not
exercise, not stress, not genetics, not drugs,
not surgery – that has a greater impact on our
quality of life, incidence of illness, and the
premature death from all causes than does
love and intimacy."
Jeff Levin, epidemiologist, puts it this way,
“…experts have singled out love as foremost
among the human emotions capable of
promoting and maintaining health and
achieving healing.”
Our 4th Friday Ride will take place Oct. 24, 67pm starting in front of the DeLand Area
Chamber of Commerce (336 N. Woodland
Blvd) and ending at Café Davinci (112 West
Georgia Ave.) about an hour later. You won’t
want to miss this monthly activity. It is a great
way to exercise and build lasting relationships.
Social support may be one of the least
advertised facets of health, and yet it has one
of the most powerful influences. It can come in
the form of a spouse, a close-knit family, a
network of friends, church, and other group
affiliations – like the Chamber of Commerce.
Even a connection to pets can have a powerful
positive effect on one’s well-being.
We have reached the “I” for Interpersonal
Relationships on our CREATION-themed
journey to health and wellness. Social
connection fortifies our resolve, improves our
health and enhances our overall well-being.
What do we mean by "social connection" or
"social connectedness?” Simply put, it means
interacting with other people, such as friends
or relatives.
