Thanks to so many of you in the community who have made this a great experience. I have enjoyed getting to know patrons (not only their reading likes & dislikes) and working with various groups in the community. A library should be a main focus of any community and I trust I have helped to achieve that end. Thanks for all the great memories. My last day at the library is Friday, October 24. If when you open your mail box you think there is enough mail to bury you, imagine Mr. Glen Murray, the new Minister of the Environment who has inherited the backlog of mail sent to his predecessor Mr. Jim Bradley. On one occasion alone, OPAL, Green Watch and The Oxford Coalition for Social Justice sent him a pile of 12,463 letters. We know too that others emailed letters & questions. Recently someone recalled the lovely “invasive species” postcards where a parallel was drawn between the destruction wreaked by Asian Longhorn Beetles on our trees or Purple Loosestrife and the danger posed to our water by dumps filled with garbage over or beside it. We mailed them. Mr. Bradley claimed not to have seen them. He certainly didn’t count them. Now with Mr. Glen Murray in office, we hope that the over 750 letters from community members which have been sent winging their way to him will cause him to stop and think about the opposition all across Oxford County & beyond to the dump proposal. In fact Londoners and people from other watersheds know that being downriver or being elsewhere for water does not exempt them from risks. Downstream communities have reason to worry about the effects on the Thames, a Heritage River. Those who live in the KitchenerWaterloo-Cambridge area know that what gets past onE set of officials often lands on them too. So people in other parts of Ontario are concerned about dumps over fractured bedrock. All those people have joined their voices to ours. Let’s hope Mr. Murray hears. The time is coming when the Ministry needs to decide what they will do with Walker’s application and the Terms of Reference they have submitted, revised and now seem to be revising again. We know what they should do; we also know that the Minister cannot be satisfied with it and needs to turn it down. To continue with this year's theme, the Ingersoll Cheese & Agricultural Museum has just opened a new exhibition entitled "Oxford in the Age of Innocence". This travelling display created by the Woodstock Museum National Historic Site examines the day to day lives of Oxford County residents in that time period just prior to the start of World War I - that so-called "age of innocence" before the hell & horror of the Great War became a reality. This display is one of many things being planned & coordinated by several museums, archives & historical societies in Oxford to organize 100 different events and activities between now and November 2018. By Remembrance Day that year everyone can look back and say that Oxford County has marked the 100th anniversary of WW1 100 different ways. To see some of those 100 events, go to www.oxfordremembers.ca. If anyone has ideas on how their group or association could participate, please contact me at the Ingersoll Museum 519-485-5510. The display marking 200 years since the War of 1812 ravaged this area is still on for a few more weeks too. Come learn more of the details behind this war between Great Britain and the United States; the war which was primarily fought in present day southern Ontario. Special thanks to the Archives of Ontario for the loan of their display. On a more joyous note, the Ingersoll Museum will be once again hosting the ever popular Pumpkinfest Sat Oct 18th between 12-4pm. There will be kids crafts & games, cookie decorating (while supplies last), face painting, storytime with Miss Gail from the Ingersoll branch of the Oxford County Library and the first 400 families can earn a free pumpkin to take home. As always, the Ingersoll Museum and our site partner the Oxford County Museum School are available for school programming, after-hour visits by special interest groups, or coming to your next meeting as a guest speaker. We are pleased to present our exhibit, “Above the Battlefields: Homing Pigeons in the Great War”, which will open Oct 27 and un until Nov 30. “Before the advent of radio, pigeons were used to carry battlefield messages to their home coop behind the lines. Targeted by enemy sharpshooters, challenged by weather and driven by the need to find their way home, these simple birds were critically important to the war effort. Learn about pigeons and some of their missions and how the allure of these birds continues today. Both Harvey and his wife Erma were very involved in their community. Harvey wishing to honour his community decided to establish the Harvey and Erma Beaty Fund with the London Community Foundation in 1994. Beaty felt this was a way to give back to the communities that had helped him build his business. The grant was designed to support organizations that have a registered charity number from Oxford and Middlesex Counties. A few years ago, Cold Spring Farms became a member of Maple Leaf Food Inc. and as part of the new ownership the Harvey and Erma Beaty Fund was reviewed to ensure that it met the corporate direction and philosophy of the parent body, Maple Leaf Foods Inc. The fund is managed by the London Community Foundation and they seek grant applications for Middlesex County and the Oxford Community Foundation seeks grant applications for Oxford County. Eligible grants are reviewed by a Donor Advisory Committee. The new criteria of the Fund is now targeted at food related grants, usually capital in nature and supporting those in our community who are struggling financially. Grants totalling over $20,000 were recently presented by Jean Carson, Office Facilities Manager of Cold Springs Farm, on behalf of Maple Leaf Foods Inc. and members of the Donor Advisory Committee. The monies were distributed as follows: • $17,500 to Fusion Youth Centre, Ingersoll to convert to a commercial training kitchen & provide a patio & working garden. • $2,850 to Heartland Habitat for Humanity for kitchen cupboards and appliances for one unit of the Woodstock build • $1,150 to Tillsonburg Senior Centre to host a series of cooking workshops for Seniors, focusing on nutritional meals on a budget. Grant information can be found on the Oxford Community Foundation’s website: www.oxfordcommunityfoundation.org. Everything, including the kitchen sink, will be on sale Sat Oct 4, 8am2pm, at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 56 Thames St S, Ingersoll. Sale items include: baking, antiques, clothing, vacations, silent auctions, oh yes and a lot of fun! ZOMBIES DON’T GET STALE, DO THEY? When organizer Rick Roach of Compass Group proposed November 1st as a date for a Halloween dance at Unifor 88’s Hall in Ingersoll, who could resist? Firstly, Friday night, when kids would go trick-ortreating would be done! Finding a friendly neighbourhood babysitter for Saturday night would be easy, and who wouldn’t be happy to let an energetic young adult help the little ones wear off their chocolate and candy-induced energy? Additionally, someone suggested that costumes would all be on sale since the date for this dance is actually All Saints’ Day. Someone else thought they could be reused from the kids (though size might matter). Or, costumes could be cobbled together responsibly by visiting local charity shops or consignment stores for astounding clothes, costumes and accessories to upcycle - truly a dump-fighter’s way to reduce waste. Finally, if you need to explain why you are headed to a Halloween Party in November, you could tell people that a real zombie would only get riper smelling & gorier looking a day later. All good! All should come join OPAL, fine friends and foul fiends at Ingersoll’s Arena 8pm-1am for some ghoulish good times and the wonderfully vivacious Wine Vinyl’s solid sounds. What if all your friends come? Will they be recognizable? COIN CLUB Ingersoll Coin Club meets the 3rd Monday of the month at Ingersoll Services for Seniors at 7:30pm. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT TRINITY? So many people in our community have commented that it is such a shame to tear down a beautiful & historic building. While it is unfortunate, we invite you to recognize & celebrate that the vibrant faith community of Trinity United Church is not defined by its building. In this time of change, we continue to answer the call to seek justice, love kindness & walk humbly with our God, as we explore the possibilities for new & exciting ways to be the church. As demolition comes to a close, the building of our “New Wall” will begin. In celebration of this, we are kicking off our “Build the Wall Campaign.” The wall will be a beautiful brick façade, with 3 of the stained glass windows from the original structure installed & backlit. We are excited about this design, and know it will be a beautiful addition to our community and a way to honour & integrate our history as we move forward. As a member of the community, we invite you to support this project by donating to our “Build the Wall Campaign.” You may mail a cheque directly to the church (please mark “Build the Wall” in the memo line): 118 Church St, Ingersoll, N5C 2X6, or by contacting the office at 519-485-0820, should you need additional information. A Tax Receipt will be issued for donation $20 & over so make sure your donation contains your mailing address. We do hope you consider investing in our community by investing in our church. We look forward to your support & the opportunity to continue to share God’s love in Ingersoll & the surrounding area. PARKINSON SUPERWALK Superheroes in Oxford County combined their super powers to fight Parkinson’s disease at the 3rd annual Oxford County Parkinson SuperWalk held at South Gate Centre. Their super-human efforts helped raise over $13,800! Parkinson SuperWalk is the largest national fundraising event for Parkinson’s. 110 communities across Canada, including 12 communities in Southwestern Ontario, joined the fight to find a cure. In Southwestern Ontario, our goal is to raise $500,000 with a nationwide goal of $3 million. Proceeds from the Parkinson SuperWalks in southwestern Ontario go to Parkinson’s research, education & the support services provided by Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario (PSSO). Last year, PSSO funded (with our regional partners) over $1.27 million in innovative research through the National Research Program. PSSO also hosted education conferences & workshops with expert speakers, managed 35 support groups, provided The Parkinson’s Update magazine with a semiannual circulation of 5,500 and provided one-on-one support to individuals living with Parkinson’s & their family members. Parkinson’s is the 2nd most common degenerative neurological disorder after Alzheimer’s. It is estimated that more than 10,000 Southwestern Ontario residents and more than 100,000 Canadians live with Parkinson’s. It is cruel & unforgiving causing tremors, rigidity, postural instability, difficulty talking, walking & swallowing, reduced facial expression and in some cases, depression & dementia. The debilitating effects of Parkinson’s are felt not only by the person with the disease, but their entire family. It knows no bounds and can strike anyone - women and men of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles. There is currently no known cure. Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario is a not-for-profit charitable organization that exists to address the personal and social consequences of Parkinson's through support services, education, advocacy and research. ELEMENTARY STUDENTS CONTEST The Heroes of Zorra will be offering an opportunity for Grades 4-8 to participate in a contest that will enhance their knowledge of the history of Zorra and its residents who served our country over the years. Students are encouraged to use the Heroes of Zorra web site (www.heroesofzorra.ca) and other resources such as libraries, family members, local residents, etc. to gain more information on these local heroes. A sub-committee of the Heroes of Zorra has been created that includes past & present teachers and the individual contests will fall within this year’s current school curriculum criteria. The contribution of these teachers is very much appreciated. Grade 4 students will be asked to produce a media text; Grade 5 a flyer/poster: Grade 6 a pamphlet; and Grades 7/8 a 1 minute video. Specific details will be distributed through the schools early in October with the deadline for entries to be early November. Prizes will be awarded within each of the 3 elementary schools in Zorra and to an overall grand champion. We look forward to seeing the creative work that our local students produce and anticipate being able to display the winners on the Heroes of Zorra website under the “Youth” tab so that you too will be able to appreciate their efforts. Carroll Baker is a 5 time winner of the Juno Award for Country Female Vocalist of the Year and a member of the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame (1992), also a Member of the Order of Canada (2009) "for her achievements as a Canadian country music singer and songwriter." Carroll’s string of 528 weeks (more than 10 years) on the country hits chart from October 1970 through August 1982 is unmatched by any other Canadian artist. During that golden span, 31 consecutive Baker singles reached the charts, 14 of them soaring to No. 1, including 12 consecutive singles. The fall lineup of all-stars continues Nov 2 when Joan Spalding, the First Lady of Bluewater Country Music, who will head the Nov 2 “Stand up and be Proud” playbill. The Dec 7 headliners at Purple Hill will be 2 Canadian country music hall of famers Marie Bottrell & Wendell Ferguson. COUNCIL NEWS BY GORDON MACKAY This has been a slow month for council news with holidays and the 2nd council meeting in September being cancelled so we can all go to London to support the AJ Baker ARC presentation. We hope that all the hard work that many in our community have made will have a positive result. Zorra council is in what is called a Lame Duck Period as of Sept 12 (nomination deadline day) and will continue to Dec 2 which is the 1st meeting of the new council. This happens when it is clear that 75% of the old council will not be returned. This will be the case in Zorra as 2 new councillors have been acclaimed. This limits councils decision making process & turns the powers over to the Chief Administrative Officer during this period. The Embro Fair was disappointed that I believe for only the 2nd time in their long history the parade had to be cancelled. Thanks to all the volunteers who made all the other events successful. In what is shaping up to be a very late fall, be aware of slow moving vehicles beyond the daylight hours trying to get crops off. Have a safe and enjoyable fall. Yours Sincerely, Gordon MacKay AHA MOMENTS IN SWOX (and elsewhere) Residents of Southwest Oxford are perhaps more familiar with TrashapaloozAHA than other parts of Oxford County because the inaugural giant swap meet was held at Foldens about a full year ago. Using a vacant public building meant to hold 3 dump trucks or things of their size, members of OPAL and the Oxford Coalition for Social Justice invited residents to have that AHA moment when they realized that things found lurking in the shed, basement & garage might take on a new life in someone else’s care. So, about 5 times on a sunny June day, the building filled & emptied as people brought in their kitchen wares, building supplies, garden accessories, clothing, books, odds & sods. The idea was that nothing should go to waste and especially not to a landfill. The concept is about how we can change ever so slightly how we see & dispose of things to help with Oxford County people’s number one priority: Stop the dump. The attempt to quantify how much came & went is complicated by the fact that not everything being donated made it into the building. Sometimes people would see things arriving, like the rattan furniture set on a trailer, which would make an immediate truck-to-truck or trailer-to-trailer transfer. Not only did this first “free-store” in Foldens set the standard for trunk-to-trunk exchanges, it generated the idea of support for permanent agencies who take in the unwanted and use them to fund their training. Loaded vehicles left TrashapaloozAHA for GoodWill in Woodstock & Ingersoll’s Fusion Youth Centre. This fall, when TrashapaloozAHA 3 was being planned for Sept 20, it was taken for granted that the ReStore would be there to talk about their programs for building houses, giving families a hand up and training volunteers. GoodWill would take a more active role, sending people to explain their education programs & how donations benefit the community all year long. Fusion Youth were told to be not so shy: they should explain their program more and perhaps also take more electronics for use or recycling as the day went on. The collective good seems like a good thing to the planning committee. Naturally the planning committee has expanded, bringing in the Ingersoll & District Nature Club to take an active role too. So, The Oxford Coalition for Social Justice and OPAL are proud that the concept has grown in Southwest Oxford, that Ingersoll’s participation saw the gigantic space of the arena fill & empty multiple times and that Zorra Township’s leaders have mused multiple times about the possibility of replicating TrashapaloozAHA events in several communities. Our grandparents would say “Waste not, want not” and today we know that to discard something as waste is to destroy valuable goods which could gain in value if assembled in creative ways. Could that old saw horse and planter box be hammered together to make a raised planter for cascading blooms or hanging strawberries to harvest in the spring? Not wanting to waste any opportunity, TrashapaloozAHA’s planning committee jumped at the opportunity offered by the Lions to use the wonderful Pavilion in the Sweaburg Ball Park and salivated at the thought that the breakfast sandwiches provided by the volunteers from the baseball team would help support them too. That brought TrashapaloozAHA back to Sweaburg for Sept 20. TrashapaloozAHA started with an “AHA” moment & spawns many new ways to think about consuming & reusing objects. While SWOX has hosted it twice now, the question is “Who’s next?”. Do you collect interesting leaves as you take a stroll in the showers of coloured leaves in October? I remember having pressed them in phone books when I was younger, to be just a little bit disappointed when I found them later a little crumbly & not as brilliant as they had been. So, last year I tried something different. I set my autumn jewels (leaves) on the scanner bed & scanned them... it works! You may save these images to use later for artwork or adornments in your scrapbooking pages. Have you been to the Ingersoll library recently? Wonderful improvements have been made for viewing artwork. They now hang in a new location. As you come in you’ll want to head to your left past the adult book sections right to the back wall where there are at least 12 hangers supporting fine art works. We have Mary-Anne Murphy from Oxford Creative Connections to thank for this new excellent hanging system. Each month another artist is able to display their works there. Please promote the Artists of Oxford and check it out. You may even want to leave a message at facebook.com/ArtistsOfOxford. Mark your calendars for Sat Oct 25, the Annual UCW’s Craft Original’s Sale will start 9am at Westminster United Church (Hall), Thamesford. You’re sure to enjoy this event as you can whittle down your Christmas shopping list, pick up a few hostess gifts & enjoy lunch with a friend. You may also win one of the hourly door prize draws.
