THORNDALE FALL FAIR YOUTH MOVIE PROJECT
For our 3rd year in a row, I Love Thorndale is encouraging the youth
of Thorndale to create a video project as an entry for the Thorndale
Fall Fair. The 2015 entries will again be creating a music video and
must be based on the fair's theme "We Have a Good Thing Growing."

Happy New Year! It is time for our new year program. Our first speaker for 2015 will be Brenda Aarts from London Orchid Society bringing
lots of info & speaking on the ease of growing orchids. They can add
colour for most of the winter as their flowers can last 3 months. Our
meetings are held at St. James Anglican Church Hall, 180 Oxford St,
Ingersoll. Meetings start at 7:30pm and the date is Jan 27. Hope to

I would like to introduce myself as the new branch supervisor at the
Thamesford Library. My name is Jessica Beeton and by the time this
issue of the Village Voice is published I will have been working at the
Thamesford library for a little over a month. I'd like to thank everyone
for welcoming me into the community. I appreciate the opportunity to
get to know our library patrons so stop into the branch & say hello.

your generous donations supported the Ingersoll & District InterChurch collection. I'd like to also thank TPLAC (Thamesford Public

As we look back over the past year, it seems almost surreal that we
accomplished so much for our special year of celebrations. I am sure
I would miss someone if I named each of you personally, so I will say
"Thank you" to all the folks who helped with any or all of our "100
years" celebrations. I am so pleased with all that we did, and all that
we are doing at Chalmers United in Kintore. By the time you read this,
our Christmas Eve service will have taken place & the new year will
be upon us. God places desires in our heart, and it is a desire of mine
to draw even closer to God and share His love with as many people

OXFORD MUSEUM SCHOOL
The Museum School is going to be a beehive of activity this coming
New Year! We have set the dates for our special project of workshops
for those interested in learning more about display methods and
preparing an exhibit. Instructors will be from the museum & heritage
fields, and in a casual atmosphere, we’ll cover a number of techniques
& skills to help the participants’ develop their own projects, or ones
with an institution they are involved with. This would help people who
arrange display for libraries, in schools, in public buildings, or for service clubs. These workshops are open to all ages. Please join us for
any one of these free workshops. There is a one-time registration fee

How often have you averted your eyes from a text panel at a museum
because it’s just too wordy? There’s a way to prepare information that
you want others to read.
Feb 25, 9am Accessibility in the Museum. It’s more than just steps &
doors. It’s lighting, it’s moving through the exhibit space, it’s understanding spoken words, it’s being able to sit still & follow a program
and so much more.
Feb 25, 1pm Developing an Educational Program. It’s a great exhibit,
but if schoolchildren can’t relate to it, what’s the point? We’ll look at
curriculum & linking the program to it, devising hands-on activities,
time-management skills, and how to promote the program.
Mar 11, 9am Artifact Handling. Sooner or later, you’ll have to touch an
artifact, and you need to do it the right way. Gloves, no gloves, what
type of gloves – we’ll sort through it and show you how to feel more
comfortable handling 100 year old artifacts.
Mar 11, 1pm Exhibit Design: Delight or Dilemma? What makes an
exhibit look like an exhibit and not a pile of old stuff? There’s an order
to it all, and the various steps will be discussed, then put into practice
in class with artifacts, themes, design, and props to bring it to life.
These workshops are made possible with the financial assistance of
the Retired Teachers of Ontario and the Seniors Community Grant.

GLEN MURRAY GETS CARDED!
“Are you really sending Christmas cards to Mr. Murray?” That was the
question as a 2nd heap of them was dropped off for him, and “Are they
rude?”. Now why would anyone expect rudeness from an Oxfordian
toward Glen Murray! Actually the cards were the lovely greeting cards
often received from various charitable organizations by donors to
good causes, but in this case, written to the Minister of the
Environment with messages like “All I want for Xmas is No Dump in
Oxford” or with “All I want is clear air & clean water”. Not a rude word
was uttered, not with Xmas fast approaching. Clearly, the local community does not accept Walker’s dump proposal and expects Murray
to reject it soon. As children, we likely all wrote a card to Santa Claus,
and best of all, got a reply. How about answering these, Mr. Murray?
EVENING OF A CAPPELLA MUSIC!
We're back and we're going bigger and better than last year! Forest
City Fire, a premier men’s a cappella ensemble, based out of south

Wow, December just flew by! We had so much fun singing at the
Lion’s Carol sing & working on our ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas
float for the Christmas parade. We hope you enjoyed it too. Thanks so
much to John Markarskey for all your help building & lighting our float
and also for driving it in the parade - we couldn’t do it without you! Of
course, we also made time for a big Christmas party with all the
Sparks, Brownies & Guides together, made some pretty awesome
crafts and earned a few badges along the way! We’re hoping we get
lots of snow soon so we can play outside & maybe even go tobogganing - maybe we’ll see you at the hill one Wednesday night! When we
get back together in January, we’ll be turning our focus to science &
technology. In the meantime, Happy New Year everyone!

ART IN THE HEART
A New Year! I love the idea of idea of a New Year it’s like a new slate
or a blank piece of canvas, not to make corrections or rewrite but
rather to try something completely new & fresh. Last month I used the
phrase if your youngsters are a little younger & enjoy creating crafts...
well I’m not a youngster but I do still enjoy creating crafts. So I am
going to let my heart do the talking & describe some craft type arts.
Besides the needle crafts usually done by adults, needle point, and
embroidery, sewing and quilting there are variations of these that can
create outstanding artwork. And if you think quilting isn’t an art, (and
don’t say that out-loud) stop in at the Ingersoll Creative Art Centre and
be awed by the quilts adorning the walls in the quilting room. ICAC is
open: Mon-Fri 9-12 & 1-4, Sat & Sun 2-4, closed holiday weekends.
Check it out online at: creativeartscentre.com. Molas are a form of
fabric cutting art that is beautiful & amazingly made. Layers of different coloured fabrics are sewn together with minuet stitches. (Imagine
this in the size of a 10x12 inch rectangle). The sewing is done in the
shape of an outlined drawing or design. Very carefully, sections of the
fabric between the lines are then cut away to expose the desired
colour(s) below. More elaborate than the craft of cutting snowflakes is
the art of paper cutting, paper folding or leaf cutting. Look these up on
line & you will find this artwork nearly impossible to describe never
mind try to envision creating them. Don’t be intimidated by these arts
but rather use some of the ideas to launch your own artwork or crafts
in the year 2015. Crafting doesn’t need to be that detailed for us to
enjoy it though, whether these creations are worn by us or our walls
or proudly displayed over a guest bed. If you do hang your fibre art on
a wall be sure to keep it away from heat sources such as heaters for
safety’s sake. And also keep it away from moisture & strong sources
of light as they will cause the colour to fade too quickly & compromise
the strength of their fibres. Framing your stitchery with matting is most
always recommended. The mat serves to preserve the art as well as
enhancing it. Below is a recipe for modeling clay that will harden to a
pure white colour. Roll it out onto butcher paper and use templates of
hearts for valentines, eggs, butterflies & sunflowers to cut out your
shapes that once dried can be painted with acrylic paint. Once
stamped or cut out, use a straw to make a hole near the top for a fine
ribbon to be tied to it. Be sure to carefully turn your pieces over daily
& within a couple of days they should be dry. These pieces can be
hung from suction cups on your window. Let the kids form the left over
scraps into whatever their artistic hearts’ desire. If you like to help your
children prepare things ahead of time, use some of your Christmas
cookie cutters to stamp out images of stars, Christmas trees, Santas
& gingerbread men. When these are 100% dry, tuck them in a plastic
container cushioned by paper towels, pull them out next November &
have the children paint them. They will then have handmade
Christmas ornaments that can be given as gifts. They will be pretty but
also fragile, take care when handling.
Recipe for White Modeling Clay:
1 cup cornstarch
2 cups baking soda
1 ½ cup water
Combine ingredients in a pot with a handle. Turn heat to medium &
with a wooden spoon continuously stir up the mixture making sure it’s
not sticking to the bottom. After it has started to cook it will become the
consistency of matched potatoes. Remove from heat, let it cool in a
bowl with plate on top to stop from drying. When cooler, divide it up
among the kids and let them enjoy the feel of kneading it before it’s
rolled out. Enjoy the New Year and let me know if you have some

annual "Crop for a cause" Scrapbooking fundraiser. This fundraiser
will send a missions team to Port Gibson, Mississippi, over March
Break 2015, where they are "Hands of Christ Extended" performing
acts of kindness to help increase quality of life, through improvements

ST. ANDREW’S DAY CELEBRATED

In Scotland, and many countries with Scottish connections, St
Andrew’s Day is marked with a celebration of Scottish culture with traditional Scottish food, music & dance. Not to be out done by fellow
countrymen, the Zorra Caledonian Society held their 78th celebrations
on Nov 28, at the Embro Community Centre – 2 days before the actual feast day which is Nov 30. Janice’s Fine Country Catering provided
a delicious roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings including
Christmas pudding with rum sauce. The oatmeal cookies were made
by the Brooksdale Women’s Institute. The Haggis was made by
Richard Moon of Embro. Mayor of Ingersoll Ted Comiskey led the
audience of 200 with the singing of God Save the Queen and O
Canada. The address to the Haggis was recited by Lize Giffen, new
to Canada & working at the Stratford Festival. Haggis Bearer was 1st
Vice president Steve MacDonald. Sim School of Highland Dance,
Embro provided a short program of dance and the Ingersoll Pipe band
played a medley of pieces. Guest speaker was James Brisbin from
Exeter. Celtic entertainment was provided by Ted Comiskey, Bob
Breen and Jin Gonder. The evening of celebrating the Scottish
Heritage of the village of Embro and Township of Zorra and the successful Embro Highland Games ended with the singing of “Auld Lang
Syne”. And remember “Cead Mile Failte”.

When a resolution requires you to change how you behave daily, it is
a usually a major challenge. So when the board of directors of Oxford
People Against the Landfill decided to reduce their household waste,
it was against a background of “Oh, I only have a full can of garbage
every 3 weeks or so!” and “I see recycling is listed here, so do I have
to report it too?”. As expected, OPAL directors are already engaged
personally, locally & more broadly in initiatives to reduce waste. Then
someone said “Isn’t zero the target?”. Of course, that is the case,
when OPAL represents people wanting to stop Walker’s proposed
dump from threatening our air, water and land. When you think about
it, everything you discard is a form of waste: Precious resources &
energy went into making it. It is not more virtuous, then, to put out 5
bins of recycling than only one. It is better to avoid the recyclables in
the first place. Waste diversion is only a step; waste aversion is the
solution. Like many, members of the board of directors will begin with
renewed enthusiasm to adopt the 5 R’s of waste reduction in the New
Year. They will refuse to purchase products which will be discarded
soon & they will refuse over-packaging. They will rethink the necessity of acquiring new objects, offering vintage gifts, homemade treats &
experiences over material goods. They will reuse often, share &
repair. They will continue to recycle. They will rot down food scraps &
plant matter to make compost. If a sixth R is needed, they will respond
to the challenge and they will pass it forward. So OPAL has officially
thrown down the gantlet to the Oxford Coalition for Social Justice:
“Will they take the challenge? Will they vie for the record for the most
waste reduction?” Moreover, will the readers of the Village Voice take
the challenge too? Results of the challenge between OPAL and the
Coalition will be made public at the end of January. Further challengers have yet to be seen. Waste reduction in the GTA and Golden
Horseshoe would mean that Walker’s proposed dump would not be
necessary at all. Let’s show the way.

ALLISON LUPTON BAND FUNDRAISER
The Ugali Growing Project presents the Allison
Lupton Band in concert as a fundraising event in
support of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. The 5
piece band will perform Sat, Feb 21 at Foldens
United Church, 374097 Foldens Line (Cty Rd 6) at
Sweaburg Rd (Cty Rd 12) just south of Hwy 401
(interchange 222) west of Woodstock. Doors open
7:30pm, concert at 8pm. International treats will be
available during intermission. Advance tickets $25 can be obtained by

rural Ontario community of West Zorra Township where she learned
to sing harmony in the church choir. Her career in music began playing folk music with the band Killiecrankie which was regularly featured
on CBC Radio’s legendary Max Ferguson Show. Lupton has performed at various festivals & venues including Mariposa, Lunenburg,
and on CBC’s Vinyl Café. In 2008, Allison was honored with a nomination in the “Traditional Singer of the Year” category by the Canadian
Folk Music Awards. Most recently, Allison was named “Musician-InResidence” at McDougall Cottage in Cambridge, ON. The Allison
Lupton Band is composed of a stellar group of musicians, including
renowned veteran of the Canadian folk scene Ian Bell, acclaimed
bass player Denis Rondeau, Grand North American Fiddle Champion
Shane Cook & CCBA’s Mandolin Player of the Year Andrew Collins.
Delighting listeners with their beautiful renditions of traditional & original songs & tunes, the group features exquisite, 3 part vocal harmonies & captivating arrangements highlighting flute, fiddle, guitar,
accordion, mandolin, banjo & acoustic bass. Traditional music from
Ireland and Scotland is Lupton's specialty. “Allison has a beautiful,
clear singing voice, an eclectic capability and sensibility and the ability to tell a story with her flute. She is a wonderful musician and a lovely person.” (Stuart McLean, The Vinyl Cafe, CBC Radio). The
fundraising concert will feature tunes from Lupton’s recently released
3rd album, “Half My Heart”, acclaimed as one of her best compilations
yet. Lupton has two previous solo recordings: “My True Love” (2001)
and “Fly Like Swallows” (2007).

News", says that entertainers are looking at Purple Hill Opry as a performing destination. And country music fans are adopting Purple Hill
Opry as their Country Music Home. The Opry Shows are always the
1st Sunday of the month, showtime is 2pm & always includes a Roast
Beef Dinner at 5pm. The Purple Hill Country Show Band "The Boys of
Purple Hill" is one of Ontario's premier show bands and no question is
the motor that drives the Purple Hill Opry Shows! The Band is an
absolute all-star line-up on it's own. Band member John P. Allen
(Country Music Hall of Fame) says the Remembrance Day Special, "I
believe that that was the best show that we have ever played!" Band
leader Guy Melanson says, "The band is at a new high!" At the next
show, Sun, Feb 1, the Opry will showcase The Boys of Purple Hill in
all genres of music. See special guests: The Fabulous Wayne Mach always a great showman. Wayne was a regular performer of the former Nashville North Show and has preformed on just about any stage

Hector (Hammer) Sturgeon from Chippewa on the Thames. Hector

play the jigs & reels for Tiffany Fewster (3x Canadian Step Dancing
Champion). Our hometown boys, Don Bentum "The Silver Fox", a
popular recording artist from Thorndale will take you down memory
lane with his time honoured love songs! Donnie will be joined by Les
Holmes and Elizabeth as they preform one of the most loved dances
of the 60's & 70's. You must see this action-packed "jive dance" as Les

my last report on behalf of the Oxford Community Foundation as I
retired Dec 23. The Foundation is in very capable hands of
Administrative Assistant Katie Cunnington until a replacement is
announced. I wish to extend to everyone in Oxford County my sincere
appreciation to you for your ongoing support in helping OCF continue
to grow & be a vibrant part of what makes Oxford County such a very

new marriage laws & tie the knot after being together for 39 years.

housing. George crashes with 2 gay police officers, while Ben, who's
a painter, bunks with his nephew's family in Brooklyn.

Westminster United Church, Thamesford, is offering an 8 week workshop on grieving starting Wed Jan 14, 8pm. Catherine Cannon, certified Edu-therapyTM specialist will be conducting the classes. There are
over 60 different kinds of losses, including death of a loved one, relationship problems, loss of health, childhood issues, loss of confidence,
job loss, retirement, etc. We ALL grieve due to one or more of these
losses. Our reactions to that grieving are normal. The problem is, we
haven't been effectively taught skills for coping with our reactions. In
fact, some of the things we have learned have been counterproductive. This program can help you cope with your current grief in a more

The Zorra Skating Club is still accepting registrations for the 2nd winter skating session. Skating
begins in January through to the end of March.
The annual “I Love My Skater” dinner auction will
be held Sat, Jan, 31, 6pm. The dinner will be
catered by Julie Cook. Tickets are $20/person and
are available from any member of the club. The
Zorra Skating Club’s annual carnival will take
place Sun, Ma 15, with shows at 2pm and 7pm.

MUSEUM MUSINGS
The Ingersoll Cheese & Agricultural Museum will be getting a lot more
athletic in 2015 especially when it opens the next new exhibition.
"You're A Good Sport" will look at the history of sports in & around
Ingersoll, from curling and skating on frozen ponds and early rinks to
Olympic competitions. Local athletes will be featured as well, especially inductees of the Ingersoll Sports Hall of Fame. "You're A Good
Sport" will open Jan 18 and run until April 18 so that it can coincide
with the Ontario Men's Curling Championship being hosted by the
Ingersoll District Curling Club in February, and to promote the upcoming Pan Am Games in Toronto later this summer. Lots of new special
events and many of the family favourite festivals will be taking place
in 2015 at the museum so be a good sport, give us your best shot. You

House fires happen most often during winter. House fires happen
without warning & they can be utterly devastating. They make up 97%
of our emergency responses and we always see an increase of these
calls during the winter months of December and January. Each winter,
Canadian Red Cross Disaster Management volunteers come face-toface with Canadians who have been forced from home due to a fire or
other personal disasters. These individuals & families urgently need
food, warmth & comfort to make it through this difficult time. We are
able to provide that help thanks to the generosity of Canadians like
you. You can ensure that the Canadian Red Cross is ready and able
to help those affected by personal disasters this year. $12 can provide
a comforting teddy bear for a child or $30 can provide family groceries
