The Township of Zorra invites residents and aggregate operators to attend a Public Open House to receive information about the Aggregate Policy Review Study being undertaken by staff from the Township of Zorra and the County of Oxford. To ensure your barbecue is ready for grilling season, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority recommends making this 3 step safety check part of your spring-cleaning routine: 1. CLEAN: use a pipe cleaner or wire to make sure the burner ports are free of rust, dust, dirt, spider webs or other debris. 2. CHECK: examine the hose leading from the fuel supply to the burners. Replace if cracked or damaged. 3. TEST: find leaks by applying a 50/50 solution of water and dish soap to all fuel and hose connections. If bubbles appear, tighten the connections and/or replace the damaged parts and always re-test. They built their Beaver Buggies for their sleepover/races that was held at the Scout Hall with 34th London Beavers. They had fun learning about Easter & having an Egg hunt. For the month of April they will be learning about nature by going on a hike. The Cub Scouts where busy building their Kub Kars & racing them in Dorchester against other Cub Scouts. In March 2012, the word got out that Walker plans to put a massive dump in Oxford County, affecting all residents, but those of Zorra, Ingersoll & South-West Oxford most of all. So, we banded together, formed a group, researched & planned. We called on politicians to oppose it. Municipal ones were quick to espouse our cause. That cooperation among individuals, anti-dump groups & with elected officials has meant that what is normally a rubber stamp has undergone close scrutiny. That’s a good thing. How strong a voice does Oxford raise against the dump? One count is the number of print letters submitted through the OPAL Alliance to Minister Glen Murray. It’s unprecedented. It’s huge. It approaches 33,000 from local residents & surrounding communities. Given that Walker’s plan to put a dump in Carmeuse’s Beachville quarry can affect us all, it is wise to join in asking the minister at [email protected] to turn it down. Typically of many pieces of legislation, it addresses far too many concerns to merely pinpoint radical extremist tendencies – it modifies 9 other laws already on the books & even questions the Charter of Rights which Canadians hold dear. Interference with economic activity is one of the many things covered by it. Does that mean that the shopper who boycotts products which used to be processed nearby but now are subcontracted to other nations is in violation of the act? Does it include those who ask that our environment be kept clean for the next 7 generations? Does this overreaching & vague act allow the government to decide not to reply to a question about an injustice? Apparently yes. Most surprisingly, the act allows people to accuse someone of being a terrorist without giving proof & without identifying himself to the court. Further, the accuser can testify from behind a screen. In a time when this same government is demanding that nobody remain anonymous in public, it is astonishing that Ottawa would allow this secrecy. Bill C-51, supposed to protect Canadians & to save us from worry, creates worry because of its overreach. That’s why residents of Oxford should be interested in a recent publication which links the presence of fine particulate matter in the air to risks for pregnant women & their babies. In a December 2014 press release researcher Marc Weisskopf states that “Women exposed to high levels of fine particulate matter specifically during pregnancy - particularly during the 3rd trimester - may face up to twice the risk of having a child with autism”. Weisskopf’s study followed 116,000 women & their children across the United States. Those results may serve as a warning to families in Oxford County that fine particulate matter is a concern. It is not just the necessity to dust the house constantly & to wash the car weekly, it is a question of what these microscopic particles do to our health. We are lucky then that Oxford Public Health is collecting data for a study of air here, a study with the assistance of Canada’s resident expert on dust & fine particulate matter, Dr. Ray Copes. Ron was the national special events chairperson for the Canadian Cancer Society when Terry Fox ran across Canada in his Marathon of Hope Journey, in 1980. RV CORNER Sitting here looking out the window & almost watching the snow piles disappear in front of you gives you the itch to get going & start getting things ready for another camping season. It is funny how you can go outside and it is only 3 degrees but you think it is 13 degrees & warm after the cold snap that we had in our region. We finished up our 2 shows one in London & the other in Hamilton and would like to thank the customers that came out & supported us. We are looking at doing more off premises shows this year & we will keep you informed as to where we will be. The weekend of Mar 27, 28 & 29 we had one of our trailers over at the Woodstock Home Show to be the green room for the special celebrity speakers from HGTV, celebrity real estate expert Sandra Rinomato & Damon Bennett, Mike Holmes right hand man. The pair used the trailer to relax & unwind between sharing their expertise with attendees of the show. Ingersoll RV was very pleased to have one of our products chosen to be the green room. When you get your RV out of storage, this would be the perfect time to give your roof the once over after the harsh winter. Your roof often gets neglected & is one of the more important areas on your RV. Once you are sure there are no cracks or punctures, start your cleaning process, people post all kinds of different solutions that they say works for them but remember the companies that develop special washes & sealants work closely with the manufactures of roofing materials & know exactly what will harm & what will not deteriorate your roof. I have been in withdrawal from grilling since last summer & decided to go to the butcher and purchase some T-bone steaks to grill up & came home with one that I am going to hide in the freezer because it weighed in at 32 oz. and I would bet the farm the good wife is going to say it is a lot bigger than the palm of my hand (I think this will be a steak night for a night when she is away). Anyhow getting back to the steak, there are a lot of marinades on the market & when you look at the shelves which one is best? Your best bet to real tender steak is to get it out of the fridge about an hour before grilling & give it good coating of kosher salt, sear it on the grill turning often then set off to a little cooler side of grill to cook slowly inside. Then Chambers of Commerce joined in. One steering committee member invited people to talk with him in coffee shops predicting in a way one of the next steps: kitchen table talks start soon. THE IDEA IS SPREADING First Oxford People Against the Landfill challenged The Oxford Coalition for Social Justice to reduce their garbage. Then OPAL asked the town council in Ingersoll to record their garbage, measure their recycling & weigh their compost. Both agreed! Less waste is a good thing. Now, the Coalition is paying that effort forward. They have asked the County Council, representing all Oxford, to go public on Earth Day about what goes in the garbage, what could be reused or donated & what should rot away into rich soil. When popular blogger Sarah Crellin tracked her garbage & sought ways to reduce, she found simple solutions. Avoiding paper towels means using rags torn from worn garments – saving money as well as the environment. Reducing packaging & disposable items means less to sort into the blue bin. This experience is often reported by others. At first the garbage does down, while the recycling & compost go up. Later, they too go down. It is a matter of money for all of us. Each time we reduce garbage, we save money ourselves & on our taxes. Our municipal taxes pay for garbage disposal at the Salford dump. In the eventuality that we fill the dump, our taxes would pay the mammoth cost of a new one. It’s better to avoid garbage altogether. Like the Thamesford Lions who are launching an April 11th Waste Diversion project for scrap metal, e-waste & vehicle batteries, those taking the challenge are helping the long-term environmental, financial & human health of all in Oxford. Council received a delegation about the SaveVia (www.SaveVia.ca ) campaign, which is working hard to reinstate the trains to St. Marys. Save Via is also working with Network South West, a Passenger Rail & Bus Service Action Plan. It is very important to have viable & accessible transportation in Southwestern Ontario in order to attract & retain commercial enterprises & accommodate both aging and youth populations who are not driving or do not have access to automobiles (www.swota.ca). Council passed amendments to the Clearing of Land ByLaw which relates to snow removal onto sidewalks & streets, clearing of rafuse, weeds, etc. Please see the Township’s Website for a copy of the amended ByLaw. Council also passed a motion to request MPAC look at gravel pits & quarries as a special assessment class-supporting other Townships who have the same issues as Zorra. As I am sure you will have experienced, the local roads are & will not be in great shape after this very cold winter. Just as there were issues last year, so too there will be this year. It is impossible to work on these roads until the frost is out, so please be aware of the bumps & holes and slow down. Reports received from the OPP, indicate that there have been speeding tickets issued, mostly to non-residents. Thank you Zorra people for slowing down. Now we need to get others to do the same. There is a huge issue with “911" misdials. Each call to 911 gets treated as a serious, needs attention call & ties up 911 resources, including police, to ensure that the call is not a real call. This contributes to the high cost of policing. Please consider locking your phone or carrying it in such a way that it cannot misdial. There are upcoming dates & opportunities for the public to comment on various issues. Check out Future Oxford (futureoxford.ca) which is working on a plan on how all communities in the County can work together to build a sustainable, resilient & vital future. While the workshops were held in March, there is an interactive version of the draft plan on the website & a hard copy at the Library which can be written in. (Deadline for comments Apr 6). A final draft should be presented to County Council in June & there will be an additional opportunity for comments. There is an important open house & survey regarding the Aggregate Policy Review on April 14 at the Municipal Office, 6:30-8pm, including a brief presentation of the policy review at 6:45pm. A survey will be launched which can be filled in at the Open House or on the Township’s website (zorra.on.ca) or at the Municipal Office until June 14, 2015. From the first fig fashion statement in the Garden of Eden to John’s visions of a new heaven & a new earth in the book of Revelation and beyond, humanity has dreamed of a new life for ourselves. Only problem: that dream often takes us further & further from God, which is ironic, considering God is the very source of life in the first place. At this time of year, in the midst of budding crocuses & the returning chirps of birds’ songs, we Christians do something very strange. We celebrate new life - not the new life of spring (that would be too obvious,) but the resurrected life of an itinerant preacher executed by a criminal’s death - on a cross no less! What appeared to be, at the time, the lowest of the low, we’ve exalted for nearly 2,000 years now. A miracle happened - from that lowly death came new life - not only for that young Jewish rabbi, but, even more miraculously, for the rest of the world! So, you want a better body? Start looking at it & treating it like a temple - after all God made us in God’s image. You want more money? Try being thankful for all the gifts you have in your life & you’ll see, as the one bank ad asserts, ‘you’re richer than you think.’ More free time? Start spending your time as though it is not unlimited to you, not putting off your family & friends for work and importance. More toys can come when you look at the wonderful creation that’s bursting out all around us. A better partner & a happier family are possible when we start with ourselves & offer to be the best we can be to them in the first place. And you want more fun friends try getting off Facebook & making some real connexions with real people in a real community - you’ll be surprised who you’ll meet not that far away & deeper connexions will always trump more connexions.
