Dear Friends, I love the changing of the seasons, and make sure to take time to notice all of the nuances associated with the change from Spring to Summer. The air is chilly, the leaves are turning, and pumpkins and mums dot Main St. At First Baptist, we are also entering a new season of ministry, and it is as vibrant and colorful as the fall leaves! Many of you have mentioned that there are "so many new faces," and asked "how can we get to know everyone?" This year we will be offering numerous opportunities for you to get to know one another. Keep tuned in to bulletins, announcements and electronic communications for updates. But for now, why not join in on something that is already happening in our church? Sundays are a great day to connect. Before worship we have an adult Bible study class, a Sunday discussion group (Sunday Chat) both of which meet at 9am. After worship, stop in to Starting Point, our sermon discussion/talk back group; or sit in on the class that talks about Christian Mysticism. During the week, we offer prayer shawl ministry, Brown Bag Bible Study, Wednesday night book study, ABW, Choir, Youth Group, and in case I've missed anything- check the weekly bulletin. In this issue of Soundings, we have a page to help you get to know our church staff. I hope that you will take the time to read the profiles of our staff members, and then introduce yourself when time allows. We are so fortunate to have dedicated and passionate leaders, and I'm so thrilled to see what the future brings. It is exciting to envision what God has in store for FBC Moorestown, and we want you to be a part of it! On a personal note, if ever you feel like a cup of coffee, a chat, need counseling, or just want to visit, please call me. I'd love to meet with and get to know you better as well! FROM THE BOARD OF OUTREACH AND RELATIONSHIPS Dear Members and Friends, Almost 2000 years ago, the Apostle Paul saw a vision of a man saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” Today, that same call is being echoed all over the world – from Myanmar and Brazil to South Africa and Macau. People are crying out for the hope and light of the gospel in a world darkened by sin. At First Baptist Church of Moorestown, we are committed to Jesus’ Great Commission to “make disciples of all the nations…..” (Matthew 28:19). One of the practical ways we can do this is by supporting our annual World Mission Offering. During the month of October, we will learn about the World Mission Offering, using the theme Rise to the Challenge and the Macedonia Vision found in Acts 16. Together, we will have our hearts touched by the spiritual needs around the world. Together, we will see how International Ministries is working to place and sustain missionaries around the world. Together, we will be inspired to apply the biblical principles of Acts 16 to our daily lives. And Together, we will celebrate how our World Mission Offering gifts make possible the ministries of 114 long-term IM missionaries and more than 1800 short-term missionaries and volunteers working with more than 200 partner organizations in more than 70 countries. The Board believes that when we Rise to the Challenge, God will lead us to provide increased support for worldwide mission. Our 2014 goal is to raise $1000 during the month of October. Please join us as we gain a deeper understanding of International Ministries and how others (and we ourselves!) will be blessed through World Mission Offering giving. P. Majeski and I’m your new Music Director here at First Baptist Church of Moorestown. My home town is Reading Pa. but I now make my home in Hamilton, N.J. with my lovely wife Barbara and our dog “Scrappy”. While in Reading I had the opportunity to play many historic organs in the area. I moved to New Jersey to study music at Westminster Choir College. When I’m not making music, I love to cook, especially historic recipes. I also have a fascination with anything that is steam powered. I’m looking forward to working with all of the musicians at FBCM and I hope that you all enjoy the music we make together. PASTOR OF VISITATION Rev. Carole Boutwell The Rev. Carole Boutwell is a retired American Baptist pastor. After attending Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary as a second career student while also serving as Associate Pastor of her home church of First Baptist, Pitman, she was ordained in 1980. She then served as an institutional chaplain at the Delaware State Psychiatric Hospital for two years, and then moved to Connecticut as Associate Pastor at Central Baptist, Norwich, for seven years. She was called as senior pastor of First Baptist, Woburn, MA, serving for eight and a half years, and then as senior pastor of First Baptist, Tewksbury, MA, for ten years until retirement. During those times, she also served on many regional and associational boards and committees. Pastor Carole has two sons, both social workers, two daughters-in-law, both teachers, and four grandchildren. She enjoys visiting for the Moorestown church, as well as reading, sewing, and cooking for family and friends. She is also active in the social club of the development where she resides, in Sewell, NJ. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT Becky Weiford As many of you know, I am a long-time member and enthusiast of the mission of the First Baptist Church of Moorestown. After working with the Auxiliary of the Baptist Home of South Jersey, I truly felt prepared and called to be a part of our mission by signing on to be the Administrative Assistant here in the church office. I love my job and the opportunity it gives me to help make things run smoothly here at FBC Moorestown and the opportunities I have to help and work with those in our community. Those who know me well know I can’t bear cruelty and that I have a passion for helping those I meet who are in need. Don’t be surprised if I drop everything to care for the little stray… ANNOUNCEMENTS Why did we become a Welcoming and Affirming congregation? Considering this question, we have started a Wednesday Night Book Study Group. We'll be reading the book, "Queer Lessons for Churches on the Straight and Narrow," by Cody J. Sanders. Join us at 7 pm on Wednesday nights here at the church. This study series is open to all, including those who do not attend FBC Moorestown. The church has purchased a limited number of copies. Nook and Kindle versions are also available. For more information and to reserve your copy of the book, please contact the church office or see Pastor Linda. October Treasures Sale - On Saturday, October 11, the Auxiliary of The Baptist Home of South Jersey is hosting a sale from 10 am to noon at Riverview Estates to benefit the home and it’s residents. Holly, on Thursday, October 30, and Friday, October 31, from 8:00 am. to 5:00 pm, with continental breakfast at 7:30 am. FOOD PANTRY Please remember those who depend on our Food Pantry. All those who come really do appreciate everything we offer but items which we run out of quickly include meats, cereals, peanut butter, fruit products and toiletries. Dear Members of the Church, We wish to express our deep thanks to you for making it possible for us to attend the great meeting in July in celebration of 200 Years of American Baptist Foreign Mission, held at our magnificent American Baptist Conference Center in Wisconsin. It also was a wonderful reunion with countless friends. We look forward to sharing with you as time allows about how our denomination is involved in sharing the love of God with our needy world. But, for now, we just thank you for this stirring experience. Love, Joy, Peace, George and Charlotte Gillespie CHURCH STAFF AND BOARD CHAIRPERSONS: Rev. Linda A.
