Background
The use of Salesforce Chatter offers financial services firms with tremendous opportunities to
collaborate on new opportunities and improve communication efficiency with prospects – all
on a proven, trusted internal system of record. However, the use of Chatter also creates new
compliance obligations as regulations outlined by the SEC, FINRA, FFIEC, IIROC (Canada) and
FCA (UK) all require that business records be journaled, indexed, retained, and discoverable
on tamper-proof media for a specific number of years – regardless of the communication
channel (email, social, IM, etc.) utilized.
In spite of its convenience and productivity benefits, Salesforce Chatter’s native features were
not designed to address financial services regulatory requirements. For example, the format
in which Chatter data are stored within the Salesforce.com environment is not read-only
and there are no assurances that data that are available today will be available tomorrow.
For instance, a user can post a comment— but then delete it—even though the receiving
party may have already read, processed, or forwarded the message. Additionally, there is no
automated means of searching and exporting Chatter content from within Salesforce.com.

converting user content to email form in real-time. All elements and metadata related to
that post are included; capturing the full conversation thread and all parties involved in the
