Please feel free to invite your friends to this celebration in honor of our Guru’s homeland of India. We create an
evening of spiritual fellowship, devotion, beauty, laughter, friendship and service. The SRF Players will perform a
comedy that will keep you in stitches entitled “The Discontented Man.” And once again, we are fortunate to enjoy an
inspired performance by Deepa Banerjee, a Hindustani Classical vocalist. She will be accompanied by Chaz
Hastings on tabla and Aarshin Karande on harmonium.
Deepa Banerjee’s Hindustani Classical training started at the age of seven by her father and uncle. Her formal
Hindustani studies included masters such as Akhil Ahmed Khansaheb who was the grandson of Ustad Bashir Khan
of Agra Gharana. She also learned from Pandit Jasraj from Mevati Gharana and Pandit Rajan Mishra from Banaras
Gharana. Ms. Banerjee holds three advanced music degrees: Bachelors in Music, Sangeet Visharad (Music Expert)
and Sangeet Prabhakar (Music Illuminary) and has performed for All India Radio and Delhi Doordarshan. In the US
(since 2001), she has performed for Ragamala, Pratidhwani, Uttoron, Vedic Cultural Center, Northwest Folklife and
the Seattle Center of Self-Realization Fellowship.
Chaz Hastings is one of the most prominent performers and teachers of the North Indian Tabla in the Pacific
Northwest. Capable of playing in virtually any genre of North Indian classical and beyond, Chaz can be heard
accompanying khayal, thumri, ghazal, dhrupad, kathak dance, and instrumental music, as well as performing his
own solos on tabla. Chaz has studied tabla under numerous mentors, most recently the venerated master of Delhi
Tabla, Pandit Sudhir Mainkar of Mumbai. Chaz has received additional tabla training from such masters and Pandit
Samir Chatterjee and Pandit Yogesh Samsi. Chaz was a former faculty member of Seattle Indian Music Academy
and currently offers tabla instruction in Seattle.
Aarshin Karande was born and raised in the U.S and found his love for Indian Classical music at a young age. He
began learning Tabla and Harmonium at age 5 from his father, Sanjeev Karande, who continues to guide him. At 10
years old, Aarshin’s Hindustani Classical vocal training began with Smt. Vasu Sundarraj (disciple of Pt. Jasraj). Since
age 13, Aarshin has been studying advanced vocal music with Sandeep Ranade (disciple of Pt. Jasraj). Since age 11,
Aarshin has studied tabla from Amit Kavthekar (disciple of Utd. Zakir Hussain). A recent graduate of the University
of Washington Bothell, Aarshin maintains his passion and practice of Indian Classical music.
