Leigh Preston's Photography
encompasses a variety of areas
within the modern photographic
scene, including tuition, image
processing and, of course,
actually taking photographs.
Leigh has a relatively specific
approach to what he chooses
to make pictures of, and relies
heavily
on
atmospherics,
dramatic lighting and strong
story lines to convey an
individual style.
Chris has been actively involved
in club photography since
1979, and confesses to being a
“photo-holic”. a busy national
Pagb judge and popular
Fotospeed sponsored lecturer,
Chris has visited more than
190 different camera clubs,
and judged many regional,
national and international
exhibitions. He recently gained
his Fellowship of the royal
Photographic Society, serves on
the Licentiateship panel, and
provides advice at distinction
workshops.

PAGB Awards Officer Report
The next adjudication in November will be held at Kegworth, and from the Midlands area
there will be 13 taking the ‘C’ Credit and 9 taking the ‘D’ Distinction and 2 applicants for the
‘M’ Master.
The closed adjudication to be held in Dumfries in December will have 6 applicants from the
Midlands taking their ‘C’ Credit.
The adjudication in April 2015 at Southampton is closed for the ‘C’ Credit but there are still
places left for the ‘D’ Distinction.
The August 2015 adjudication to be held in Ormskirk is filling up quickly so those people who
want to make an application should do so as soon as possible.
The list is also open for entries to the Welsh adjudication in November 2015 - somewhere in
the deepest South Wales.

Photographers Walk
I have consulted with senior managers in the Library of Birmingham and have been advised that it was
unlikely that a decision would be made about booking the ‘Photographers Wall’ on the Café Mezzanine until
the future of the GRAIN Photography Hub is known.
Currently, only GRAIN is taking bookings for the Wall but GRAIN will end in its current form at the end of this
year – although projects it initiated will carry on through 2015.
It is hoped that GRAIN will continue in some form from 2015 onwards, but it is not yet clear what form that
will take, if so, whether it will be open to other non – GRAIN sponsored users.
GRAIN is a name that Pete James, Curator, Photographic Collections and Nicola Shipley came up with two
years ago to encompass their plans and projects. It is not an acronym. It somehow simply summed up what
they were starting off but with strong references to the past. [email protected] or
http://grainphotographyhub.co.uk
The light, environment and security conditions in the Photographers’ Wall are not to Gallery conditions. The
Library of Birmingham will issue a statement to prospective users of the Wall.
Access to MCPF Archival Materials
Library of Birmingham are advising researchers to plan a ‘mini-research campaign’ – not just for Midland
Counties Photographic Federation but for many of the other Library collections.
So, if a researcher wants to view something easily identifiable such as meeting minutes, they should then
request an appointment at [email protected] for viewing MS 2207 MCPF previous
General Meeting or Council Minutes held in the archives.
If they want to check what is held for individual photographers and so forth, they should raise an enquiry
at [email protected] and state (a) the nature of their enquiry for example photographs
from the Roy Thornton Collection and (b) whether they are tied to specific dates or whether they are flexible
for appointments to view the selected items.
Researchers will be able to view the items they have requested in the Wolfson Centre, which provides a
comfortable and welcoming environment, with Librarians and Archivists on hand to point them in the right
direction to help pursue their research. It is recommended that a study place is reserved in the centre and
please remember for access you will need a Carn ticket.

Combined PSA, FIAP and RPS Nature Photography Definition
. Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology
and archeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest
presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical
quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as
nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in
situations depicting natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are
permissible. Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens
are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement.
No techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted. Techniques that enhance the
presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content, or without altering the content of the original
scene, are permitted including HDR, focus stacking and dodging/burning. Techniques that remove elements added by the camera,
such as dust spots, digital noise, and film scratches, are allowed. Stitched images are not permitted. All allowed adjustments must
appear natural. Color images can be converted to greyscale monochrome. Infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations, are
not allowed.
Images
used
in
Nature
Photography
competitions
may
be
divided
in
two
classes:
Nature
and
Wildlife.
Images entered in Nature sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above can have landscapes, geologic formations,
weather phenomena, and extant organisms as the primary subject matter. This includes images taken with the subjects in controlled
conditions, such as zoos, game farms, botanical gardens, aquariums and any enclosure where the subjects are totally dependent on
man for food.
Images entered in Wildlife sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above are further defined as one or more extant
zoological or botanical organisms free and unrestrained in a natural or adopted habitat. Landscapes, geologic formations, photographs
of zoo or game farm animals or of any extant zoological or botanical species taken under controlled conditions are not eligible in
Wildlife sections. Wildlife is not limited to animals, birds and insects. Marine subjects and botanical subjects (including fungi and algae)
taken in the wild are suitable wildlife subjects, as are carcasses of extant species.
Wildlife images may be entered in Nature sections of Exhibitions.
PSA.
Black & White (Monochrome) (FIAP Definition)
A monochrome image is defined as having varying shades of no more than one colour (various shades of that colour from very light to
very dark) but it may be any single colour. Multi-toned images (various shades of two or more colours) and greyscale images with
added accent colour are not acceptable in Monochrome Class sections and must be entered in Colour Class sections.
FIAP.
A black and white image is one with tones from very dark grey (black) to very clear grey (white) A black and white image toned entirely
in a single colour will be able to stand in the black & white category and can be reproduced in black & white in the catalogue. On the
other hand a black and white image modified by partial toning or by the addition of one colour to a part of the image becomes a colour
image and should be entered in the colour category. This type of image will be reproduced in the colour pages of the catalogue.
