MISSION STATEMENT We, the family of Saint Martha Parish, in order to live richly in our Catholic heritage and Parish traditions, through the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the example of Saint Martha’s hospitality, devote our mind, body and spirit to: Pray to God, through the most exalted mystery, the celebration of the Eucharist and recognize in this Union with Christ the Sacrifice, Sacrament and Real Presence. Foster a home where Christianity is welcomed as the focal point, which will allow us to continue to grow as selfless, humble Catholic individuals and integral, involved members of our Parish and community; Proclaim the Good News, as did our Patron, Saint Martha, by expressing our commitment to our faith as shown in our actions, spoken in our words, and reflected in our thoughts. Serve, with humility, the spiritual and physical needs of all God’s people, born and unborn, by practicing our faith, both inwardly and outwardly, to ensure and strengthen our Catholic future. We join in communal and individual prayer to God, with Mary, our Mother, and with the help and strength of our parish patron, Saint Martha, so that we, like she, may carry the Gospel Message and profess our belief in Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God. WE ARE A TITHING PARISH God gives us everything we have and allows us to keep 90% of it for any good purpose. He simply asks that we return the first 10% to Him (5% to the local parish, 5% to God’s other good works, our personal chariƟes) in graƟtude. This spirituality of Ɵthing is as old as the Bible itself, and disposes us to make God first in every area of our lives! The aim is to secure not the Ɵthe, but the Ɵther, not the giŌ, but the giver—for God! Parental instruction is required for the each child. See the priest after Sunday Mass to set up baptism. For adults, contact the rectory to join the RCIA program. These sacraments are usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil. Sacrament of Marriage Couples planning marriage should contact the parish office at least nine months in advance. Weddings are not celebrated during the Season of Lent. Anointing of the Sick Please contact the parish office at the onset of serious illness. On the Sunday before you enter the hospital, please ask one of the priests to administer the Anointing, so that the healing touch of Christ may come to you in this beautiful sacrament. Communion Calls for Shut-Ins The homebound can be visited regularly by the parish priests and pastoral staff and brought Holy Communion on Sunday by special ministers of the Eucharist. Contact Sr. Claire if there is a need. Funerals Upon the death of a family member, contact the parish office so that a priest or other member of the pastoral staff can visit to offer comfort and help plan the funeral liturgy. Arrangement regarding time and dates of funerals are made through a funeral director. “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house and try me in this, says the Lord of Hosts. Shall I not open for you the floodgates of Heaven and pour down blessings upon you without measure?” Malachi 3:10 From the Pastor: You know, approaching tithing really is a question of putting God in the first place in our lives --- and that is what makes it so scary! Maybe we fear that we’ll find how far down God is in our priorities and it shames us. Maybe we have to muster the courage to take that great leap into the unknown. It really isn’t about money, is it? It’s really about some core values and deeply held spiritual beliefs. I thank you all who are faithful tithers and good stewards and following God’s Plan for Giving. Therefore, it is my pleasure to tithe and give something back.” QUICK FINANCIAL FACTS As we grapple with stopping increasing indebtedness and paying our bills on a timely basis, the Parish Finance Council thinks its important that each week you be made aware of some facts and figures we face. On October 5th, 577 adults used their envelopes, with an average contribution of $20.25 per envelope. If 500 adults used their envelopes with an average contribution of $25, we would make our weekly budgeted collection figure of $12,500. Did you know...that tuition MUST be paid on a timely basis, as salaries, utilities and other expenses can not wait for you? Thank you for your efforts to give sacrificially to ensure our future. Page 1 - 200 October 12, 2014 ~ 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK 12 October 2014 Dear Members of the Parish Family, A lot of activity at the parish this week--- but then, when is there not? Tomorrow, for example, is the School Golf Tournament. I sure hope many golfers will join me on the links, and support our parish school. Remember the hole-inone contest which has a $10,000 prize! (No chance I will get that, but I will surely try!) Also, since next Sunday at the 12:00 Mass Bishop Robert Maginnis will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation, there are a million details to be attended, and several events on the calendar. We will practice with the sponsors today at 1:15. All parents of the Confirmation candidates will meet Wednesday evening at 7:30 in Church for an evening of reflection. On Thursday, we will take the candidates on a retreat day, and do our final rehearsal. All this, plus the usual activities associated with this busy time of the year. This year, I will only present to the Bishop those candidates who sign a pledge that they will continue to grow in their Faith. For children in CCD, this means coming to Church every Sunday and continuing CCD classes after Confirmation, and in the future. For children in Catholic School, it will mean working hard in religion class, and attending Mass every Sunday. If the children (and their parents) will not make this promise, I will not stand in the aisle and present hypocrites to the Bishop at the ceremony. Either God is Number One or something/someone else it. It is as simple as that. May we, like Saint Martha, always be friends of Jesus. God’s Love, Fr. WEEKLY MEMORIALS The sanctuary Lamp which burns before the Blessed Sacrament reminds us of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It would be a wonderful way to memorialize a loved one who now enjoys the heavenly banquet. If you would like the lamp to burn in honor of a loved one, either in Church or in the Rectory Chapel, please send a suggested offering of $10 to the rectory office with the name of the person remembered. We will publish these memorials in the bulletin. In addition, a donation of $25 will help supply the bread and wine which are used for the Eucharist, another fitting memorial. Follow Father Al’s Pastor’s Blog on Saint Martha Parish’s Facebook page. The Sanctuary Lamp has been donated this week in honor of Helen Jachimowicz (living) The Bread and Wine have been donated this week in memory of John G. Many, many hands went into its success. Rich Salamone, Nanette Sacidor and April McCrossan headed a great group of volunteers who worked the kitchen, handled security, manned stands, sold tickets, and did the million “little” things which together resulted in a successful “fun-raiser” and fundraiser. Our maintenance crew were also helpful in set up and break-down, and our teachers were kept busy in the ticket booths. Thanks to all who donated, attended, and worked at the Carnival. As soon as final bills are paid, we will proudly announce the financial results. PLANNED GIVING WEEKEND On the weekend of 25/26 October, Mr. Joseph Herron, of the Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia will be available to share with you some ideas which will not only benefit the parish financially, but can also prove beneficial to you. (For example, investing in a charitable annuity can offer a much better rate of return than a CD!) Mr. Herron will introduce himself at each Mass and be available to share information with you after each Mass in the chapel. Planned Giving can be a very helpful tool which will help our sustainability fund to grow and also provide short term financial help to the parish. Please plan to spend some time with Joe Herron that weekend. Your participation in the program and continued patience with our staff is always valued and greatly appreciated! THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM FOR INFANTS Through Baptism, your children are plunged into the mystery of the Lord’s Death and Resurrection and become God’s own children, members of the family we call Church. You may arrange baptism by approaching one of the priests or deacons after Mass. To prepare for this sacred celebration, parents are required (and godparents invited but not required) to attend a Pre-Jordan Session. At this gathering, held on a Thursday evening at 7:30 in the rectory, one of the parish clergy and a couple who have presented children for baptism give an overview of the ceremony and theology as well as practical suggestions to enhance your experience of the big day. Pre-Jordan Class will be held on the following dates: November 13, January 15, March 12, May 21 and July 16. Consider coming to the class before your baby is born, when things are just a bit less hectic. WHAT YOU MAY NOT REALIZE ABOUT SCRIP Each school family is required to purchase an average of $50 weekly in scrip. Considering weekly bills such as gasoline and food, this is pretty simple to do... most families will exceed this minimum when they realize they are piling up tuition credits simply by making a quick stop at the scrip office. Here is what you might not realize: anyone can purchase scrip! You could apply it to a grandchild’s tuition, or a friend or neighbor, or to the parish tuition fund, so a deserving family can get some help along the way. Scrip is one of those quiet fundraisers which can benefit not only our families but our parish. We strongly encourage everyone to sign up today! Why make the trip to the stores at a mall just to buy a gift card? Our scrip office probably has what you want! THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION Bishop Robert Maginnis will visit Saint Martha to confirm our young candidates for the Sacrament on Sunday October 19, at the 12:00 Noon Mass. Only those candidates who pledge to continue their religious education will be presented for Confirmation. This means attending Mass every Sunday and, if in CCD, continuing attendance at class, and if in Catholic School, working hard at Religion Class. Some other dates to mark on your calendars: Sunday October 12, 1:15 – practice for sponsors and candidates Wednesday October 15, 7:30 PM – evening of reflection for parents Thursday October 16 : Retreat Day for candidates and final major practice Congratulations and Prayers to the parents, Godparents and family of our newly baptized Emma Grace Brown, Dwayne Reginald Formson, Jack Anthony Jones, and Moira Katharine Quinn October 5th, 2014. PARISH REGISTRATION AND MEMBERSHIP It is important that all Catholics within our boundaries be registered and active members of the parish. Circumstances sometimes change registration status. If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, you need to be sure you are registered correctly in the parish. (1) Have you moved away from you parental home (not just for college)? (2) Have you recently changed your marital status? (3) Are you living with your parents, over eighteen, and not receiving your own mailings and envelopes? If any of these apply, please call the rectory office to update your registration status. New families moving into the parish can register after any Sunday Mass. Welcome! MOTHER’S PRAYER GROUP The Mother’s Prayer Group at St. Martha’s meets on the first and third Monday’s of the month. We meet from 7:30-8:30 in the Chapel on the first floor of the school. We pray for our children and the intentions of each other. Join us! If you need additional information, contact Margaret Breen at 215-637-5666 Page 4 - 200 October 12, 2014 ~ 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time ELECTRONIC GIVING The technology exists which allows us to have our weekly donation to the parish deducted electronically and automatically. This is especially helpful --- and important --during the summer when so many are away for vacation, some for most of the summer. Call the rectory and ask for our business manager, Joe Rafalowski, for more details on this easy way to be a faithful and consistent giver. WINDOW ETTIQUETTE The fall is a tough time, environmentally speaking. Our small windows do not provide enough air flow. Many Sundays, if we open all the windows of the church, then we do not need any AC. (The same phenomenon will happen in the Spring.) However, some folks who sit near the windows choose to close the windows, resulting in the end of air flow and excessive heat for the rest of the congregation. Please: if we have opened the windows so that we all might get air, and you are cold near an open window, simply MOVE to a seat closer to the center of the church, in charity, common sense and fairness to the rest of us in church. Thank you. ST. MARTHA SENIORS General Meeting: October 13, 2014 Meeting Time: 1:00 to 3:00 PM in the Gym Doors open at: 12:30 PM Lunch will be served Speaker: Dr. Materese ~ Stroke Awareness New members are always welcome, please come join us to meet with some friends - old and new. SPIRITUAL SUPPORT SYSTEM If you are unable to attend Sunday Mass regularly, due to advancing years or health reasons, please call the Parish Office. An initial visit will be set up through Sister Claire McMahon, IHM, for a monthly visit by our priests, deacon and pastoral staff, and a weekly visit by an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist. If a neighbor or family member in our parish is interested, please ask them if they would like you to call for this spiritual support. Also, if you, or someone in our parish is in the hospital, we would appreciate being informed. H.I.P.P. laws prevent us from knowing who is hospitalized unless the patient or another person lets us know. On the Sunday before a planned admission, ask one of the priests to administer the Anointing of the Sick. WANTED: LADIES WHO CROCHET OR KNIT If you enjoy crocheting or knitting, please join us on Saturday, November 15 from 9:30 a.m. to Noon in the Seminar Room attached to the gym. Share your latest projects, ideas and patterns with The Ladies Who Love. More hands are always welcome in this ministry of providing prayer shawls to those grieving, ill or just in need of knowing someone cares and is praying for them. If you know of anyone who would like a prayer shawl or have questions regarding this ministry, please contact Carol Lynn Steffen 215-637-2531. Future Meeting: October 27, 2014 Dress in your best Halloween Costume Baby Picture Contest N.B. When school is in session, please wear nametags when entering the gym/school building. New members will be provided one. In addition, please park only in the assigned area. This procedure will keep all car & bus lanes open for school dismissal. Thanks! “CARE AND SHARE” MEDICAL ASSISTANCE ITEMS AVAILABLE Our parishioners have been very generous in their response to “Care and Share”. If you or someone you know is in need of a walker, bath chair, etc., please check the “Care and Share” poster on the vestibule bulletin board. What you need, even if you already have one but could use another one, could be available at low cost or free. If you have an item that you no longer need and someone else could use please post on the poster. SAVE THE DATE: ST.
